Looking for some TV to Watch?
by SB Sarah | April 04, 2008 | Friday at 3:55 pm | 11 CommentsIf you’re in the States and have a public television channel, check this out: Nature is running a two-part show about What Females Want and, in part two, What Males Will Do. It’s all about seduction in the animal kingdom, and what males of varying species go through to seduce and attract teh wimmins. Part one is on Sunday on the PBS nearest me (I think I have three different PBS stations between NYC, NJ and Long Island. And not a damn one of them is showing the BBC Coupling reruns any longer, nor The Vicar of Dibley dammit. But enough of my love for British sitcoms and Dawn French).
Back to the Animal attraction! The miniseries is totally programmed into the DVR (in HD, too, and Hubby will flip if the DVR fills up and he doesn’t get his recordings in) because it sounds incredibly interesting:
From spiders that dance and monkeys that drum in the name of love, to female geladas that seek male partners with hot, red chest patches—this program about sexual selection explores the unique behaviors and special adaptations that determine how animals pick their mates, and how these selections affect future generations. In some species, the normal rules of mating are turned on their head, such as the feisty female topi antelope champing at the bit to have sex with an aloof male or bonobo males practicing free love.
Given the number of open-shirt headless pec-men that adorn the covers of our favorite genre, perhaps the female geladas are part of the marking/art department? Red hot chest patches, indeed.

You might enjoy Olivia Judson’s book Dr Tatiana’s Sex Advice to All Creation.

Another Brit Com fan here having withdrawal symptoms : (
I find it interesting that, for the most part, it’s the males in the animal kingdom who are brightly colored and do all the strutting around, presentation of food and/or nest items, and head-butting to get the females’ attention, but it’s the females of the human species who wear the high heels, makeup etc. (OK, not ME, but other females.)

BBC America, make it your friend! Coupling, Torchwood, Brit Com and lots of lovely lovely stuff.
I still think I’ll stick with watching Talk Sex with Sue. Though I wonder if they will mention singing mice. That blew my mind when I learned that.

Gee, I always had a feeling that needing to get laid real bad led to rashes.
(Re. BBCA: Let us not forget the inimitable Gordon effing Ramsay and Kim and Aggie of “How Clean Is Your House”!)

So long as you catch the last two Vicar episodes, and a chance to imagine yourself marrying Richard Armitage.
Or is that just me?

One of my favorite Vicar of Dibley episodes is ‘Christmas Lunch’ from series two. Loved it! I own all the series except for the last one and that I can catch on YouTube, so all’s good.
