Links and News and a few Coupons

Jim has a light saber. This is so awesome, I'm not sure what to do with myself.Author Jim C. Hines has recreated several UF covers. This is so awesome, I don't know where to put my eyeballs first!

The insulin pump site is what makes it extra more awesome. High fives to you, sir!

I am waiting for the 'oops my ballgown is falling off my shoulders and is totally open in the back' pose. When's that coming, Jim?

What poses would you like to see Jim recreate?

In May 2011, a reader asked me about author Alison Richardson, who wrote a series of Spice Briefs. I was contacted by Ms. Richardson, who was very flattered that readers were looking for her. I have a message for you on the original entry from Ms. Richardson.

Unraveled by Courtney Milan is this month's book club pick, and it's $2 after rebate at AllRomance – but only until the 15th, so if you're thinking about it, the rebate period is running out soon!

I'm a media sponsor for the 2012 Tools of Change in Publishing conerence, which will be held February 13-15 at the New York Marriott Marquis. As a media sponsor, I have a 15% off coupon code for anyone who is thinking of registering: toc12sbtb. This is a Big Conference, and often leaves my brain full of ideas and amazing things to think about. I look forward to it each year. It's an intersection of those who technically and digitally create books and those who market them – it's a meeting of many brains, basically.

Later this month, I'll also have a pass for the whole conference to raffle off here, so stay tuned.

DocTurtle's first two chapters of The Iron Duke are going up on Tuesday, so if you're reading along, get ready! More shall be arriving from the doc soon.

And finally, I found a few coupons for Kobo and Harlequin:

Love the Jim Hines pictures reminds me of the ‘make that pose’ comic art that floats around Tumblr(This (http://permanentlyjetlagged.tu… Spiderman comic cover being the most famous). It’s the only time Liefeld (some examples: http://www.progressiveboink.co… is extremely entertaining.

Expanding on Jim’s blog post, here’s a post about trying to twist into and comparing the poses for male urban fantasy cover models to female urban fantasy cover models: http://bit.ly/wrKgBg

I got thoroughly distracted by Jim Hines’s post!  Almost cried w/ laughter.  I love Hines; his books are great, his blog is great.

I never saw the initial post about Alison Richardson but, of course, had to download the three books once I read about them.  🙂  You are so bad for my wallet!

I’m glad that she tried the pose on At Grave’s End, because I’ve always thought it looked not only uncomfortable, but also potentially impossible. I haven’t read the book, but my eye is always drawn to it when I see it in a store, simply because I can’t help staring at the angle of her left leg.

Sadly, this isn’t true. I just went to order this book and discovered that although the site misleadingly makes it appear that the book will cost $2 after rebate (http://www.allromanceebooks.co…, in fact, you only get a credit at the store for the discounted amount and you can only use it on a future purchase. (They make a distinction between “rebates” and “discounts.”) I had an online conversation with their customer support people in which they claimed that this is how all rebates work, such as for electronics and the like, but of course that’s not true—you might have to pay full price at the time but the rebate amount you get afterward is *for that purchase* and they don’t require you to buy some other electronic item and use the discount on that. I find the All Romance site’s policy very dodgy and will not be buying anything from them in the future.

  6. LG says:

@JaniceG – Their rebates always work like this. Initially, it took me some time to get used to it, and I didn’t see the point, but I now shop there all the time. The rebates come in most handy for me, and work most like actual discounts, during their big sales. That’s when I plan out my shopping so that I buy just enough for the rebates to cover the cost of the other half of the books I want to buy.

  7. JaniceG says:

@LG – I realize that if you buy there often, the “pay it forward” model can work. However, if the site shows a price of $3.99 crossed out in favor of a price of $2, that should mean that you eventually pay $2 for that book, whether you pay it at checkout or whether they send you a rebate of cash later. Giving you a voucher that you can use later for a future purchase means that particular book never costs you $2, which is what I find misleading.

Maybe I’ve been watching too many Kung Fu movies lately, but the pose for Queen of Swords seems a fairly realistic warrior pose.

The Jim Hines post was full of win!
