I Can’t Believe It’s Not Romance

by SB Sarah | October 27, 2006 | Friday at 7:39 pm | 17 Comments

Several, and I mean several, Bitchery members have written to give me the heads up about his buxom fabiosity, Fabio, appearing on America’s Next Top Model this Sunday night. And yes, I have asked the DVR to save me that special hour of Fabio so I can enjoy it and share it with you. I’ll be honest with you: I love Fabio. I’d love to buy him a beer and interview him. He cracks me up. He is a romance novel cover model who attracted a margin of fame, and is now pretty much a caricature of himself - yet he doesn’t take himself seriously at all. The Butter Romance website? The old-man-Fabio in the gondola? The over-the-top hot air balloon party to advertise a margarine spray? Cracks me up every time. But then, I find men who don’t take themselves too seriously incredibly interesting.

So when Kylara sent me this link showing the assignment for the models, I had to take a look. Note: the comments are fractious and cranky.

Seems the show, which I don’t watch so I don’t know the first thing about it, asked the contestants to design and shoot a romance novel cover with Fabio. The results are really poor. Snark-worthy, even, save for one.

I’ll be curious to watch and see how much of a snide beating the romance industry gets from the hosts or the contestants. But yet, I will be watching reality tv, which is among my least favorite things, so at least admire my fortitude.

I love ANTM, and thought Fabio came off pretty well, actually.  On the staff side of the assigment, there was a very respectful attitude toward Fabio and the shoot.  The girls were another thing, though—at least a couple of them.

Interestingly, when one girl complains later that she could feel Fabio breathing into her ear, she came off, IMO, as the one with the problem.

Can we really blame anyone there, though, for the way those covers turned out given what’s REALLY out there?

Considering it’s the girls who had to design the cover, are you at all surprised they didn’t come off well?

How many America’s New Top Model contestants read anything more demanding than the side of their morning cereal boxes (as they sit there and studiously don’t eat anything)? If they are reading, you can bet it would be something more clique-welcome, like chick-lit or the latest NYT best seller about moping, depressed people.

I saw that show and everyone on the show had nothing negative to say about Fabio or the Romance industry or romance novels.  The one girl who said she did’nt like when she felt Fabio breathing on her ear in the pose, was just complaining about the shoot. (That bitch complains about everything so trust me, it was’nt about Fabio)
My little ears were perked good and proper belive me! The first thing i thought about was that this was going to get a rant on SB so I was all set for them to start bashing Romance… But they didn’t much to my surprise!

I don’t believe that the contestants of America’s Next Top Model had anything at all to do with the covers, or the way the covers were shot.  Mr Jay told the girls what they were going to be, one a madam,  one a peasant girl in love with the master, one of “who’s my baby’s daddy” etc.

The producers of ANTM came up with the covers.  I believe that Tyra was poking fun at the stereotypes of the industry, the same way she poked fun at the stereotypes of models in the first esp.

Fabio, I thought was gracious and kind to the girls.

Actually, the girls were assigned their “story”- secret lover, mystery baby, vampire, etc- and then dressed and sent to the sets.  They have some control over their poses, although there is a lot of direction from the ANTM staff.  Tyra picks the picture she thinks is their best and in this case the graphics people added titles.  It would be a real stretch to say that the girls “design” their shoots.

I had a blast watching that episode, laughed the whole way through. No bashing of the romance industry that I could spy, and they even had a “secret baby” story for a cover shoot. Made my night.

I didn’t see the show. Being in the entertainment industry myself, I tend to be working when everybody else plays, but I did take a look at the covers.

I would just like to say that I adore the cover for “Don’t Leave Me!” Made me laugh.

So wait, it already aired and I’m catching a repeat? Wow. I love it when I reveal how utterly behind the times I am with some things.

Hey, did you know that there’s romance novels with Fabio on the cover? Yes, way!

It aired Wed night. It was a total scream and Fabio was a real charmer (if you haven’t seen him as Gill the cult leader in BUBBLE BOY, rent it NOW!).

My fav was the “othe woman” plot, which was something about leaving Fabio for her lesbian lover . . . they’ve been reading EC books or something!

One of the twins poked a toe out of the closet a couple weeks back, so every time they get a chance to give her a storyline involving another woman, they do.

Despite the secret babies and attempts at overflowing cleavage, these are not romance covers.

    a) Fabio’s shirt is buttoned in every one
    b) The Egyptian nipple opportunity is discretely covered
    c) Wouldn’t it just ROCK to see a cover with Fabio in a clench embrace with **gasp** an African American woman???

Best:  Oh No You Didn’t.  She’s writhing in his arms and he’s… looking at us.  Naughty kink potential!

UGH! I hate being a full ANTM cycle behind! (But love that it means all the TVWOP recaps are ready for me to read the minute the credits roll).

Kaite is right. With one or two notable exceptions, the contestants on ANTM are dumb as posts. Which is part of the fun, really.

The only book I would consider picking up is ‘Lady Of The Night’ and possibly Pyramid. (WTF? Who names a romance ‘Pyramid’?) The rest are hideous beyond hideous! No one is looking where they should be! Their poses are weird! The titles DON’T MATCH THE CLOTHES.

...I don’t watch ANTM and I never will.

They remind me of those Poser covers where everything is just a little bit off.

And there’s not a heaving bosom on any of those models. What kind of romance novel are these?

  15. Kalen Hughes said on 10.28.06 at 01:06 AM • [comment link]

Only one of them has any bosom to heave (I’m actually scared of how skinny the twins are).

I already saw it when it was on Wednesday night. It was… well.. interesting.

But they make you wait until about halfway through the show before you can see Fabio. Really unfair to those who were watching it purely to see him, like myself.

Good to know - I will employ the fast-forward button with glee knowing that soon, the man titty will appear. Thanks!

Yeah, I’m with you on Fabio.  He seems like a good guy with a good sense of how ridiculous it all is.  And he’s always kind, by all accounts.
