High Noon: a Giveaway!

by SB Sarah | by SB Sarah | March 30, 2009 | Monday at 7:04 pm | 103 Comments

High NoonTaking a break from the DABWAHA madness, Lifetime has offered a contest for y’all to further promote the Nora Roberts Suite of films.

Now, between you and me and the rest of the internet? I don’t know how these things could be better promoted from where I’m sitting. I’ve seen the ads in the Port Authority Bus Terminal, the subway stations I travel in, both uptown and downtown, and on signs on the street. And the posters are definitely eye-catching, if not for the icy color schemes than for the bizarre expressions on some of the actors’ faces. Jerry O’Connell and Lauren Stamile look as if something is going very, very wrong in their world.

Midnight Bayou is on again tonight at 9pm, and then High Noon premieres on 4 April. And you can watch Northern Lights online if you missed it on tv. Note: the film auto-plays when you load the page (GAH). So don’t click that link if you don’t want to start off your movie with a maxi pad commercial or something.

Plus, there’s a sweepstakes. You know, if you like to win stuff.

So, wanna win stuff now? Leave a comment and share what Nora book ought to be the next one made into a movie. I’m partial to the Born In trilogy - that would be some seriously verdant eye candy right there. Feel free to nominate anyone to play the leads, too. I expect everyone will say they want more of Heather Locklear, right? Right?!

I’ll pick a random commenter after 24 hours, and the winner will receive a signed (by Nora) copy of High Noon. So leave a comment. You might get lucky. Or Locklear. Or both.

I’d love to see Nora’s The Villa made into a movie. It’s one of my absolute favorite books of all time. That one, or her Irish Jewels trilogy would be beautiful to shoot.

I too loved the “Born In” series, but I also loved the “Dream” series set in Big Sur. I love the characters (of course) but the second in that series was the first Nora Roberts book I ever read. I’ve never looked back :)

  3. StarOpal said on 03.30.09 at 07:19 PM[link]

The Chesapeake Bay series was my first and still great love out of her books. I’d also love to see it since it’s set in Maryland, and Baltimore and the Chesapeake Bay area are my roots.

Lol. I didn’t even know they’d made movies from Nora Roberts books. I don’t watch much TV at all, even less foreign TV (which American TV is for me ;). But I’d love to see Naked in Death made into a movie! That series is fabulous, I finally got into it a few days and I’m gobbling up those books like fine chocolate truffles - which means, much faster than they deserve but I can’t help myself because it’s so good :D.  NAKED IN DEATH has everything to make a perfect movie: mystey, suspense, a little action, and love. it’s complete all in itself and we get to see Eve and Roarke meet.

As for who would play the leads….yikes. Hard to say. Hugh Jackman could be a nice Roarke, but I’d probably like an unknown actor better. No idea for Eve.

I always picture Matthew McConaughey as Tucker in “Carnal Innocence.”  Shirt off, please.

Heh. I’m not actually sure I would WANT to see my favorite NR books made into films, because they did a (IMO) terrible job with one of my early fav books: Montana Sky.

That was the first contemp I had read, more than 10 years ago, and the total package was appealing: three stories in a single title, the setting, the characters, the conflict, the mystery—everything rang all the right bells for me and I’ve re-read it multiple times.

And then there was the movie. If I’d only ever seen the movie, I’d have thought it was a mediocre book, at best. (And possibly an asstastic book, if the three female leads were anything to judge by—Charlotte Ross?!? Srsly?!? The women were caricatures, at best, of the well-drawn characters in the novel.)

Honestly, I don’t think a 2-hour movie could EVER have done the story justice, but it was bad, bad, bad. Frankly, I’d be just as happy for Lifetime to keep their hands off the other Nora books that made me happy in the happy places.

Jerry O’Connell and Lauren Stamile look as if something is going very, very wrong in their world.

Being a reincarnated crime victim is rough.

My issue with the Nora movies on Lifetime is that my favorite Nora’s tend to be the ones that focus on the hero’s journey. Lifetime movies are very heroine focused.

That said, I think the Three Sisters Island stories could make a good movie.

  8. Laurie said on 03.30.09 at 07:31 PM[link]

I definitely want to put another vote in for The Villa, as it’s one of my favorites.  However, I’m also partial to Three Fates, and think it would make a pretty darned good movie as well.  Decisions, decisions, decisions.  Darned if I know who I’d want to star in either, though.

Mary M.> I’ll second Hugh Jackman as Roarke.

The Villa. I like the three generations in the story.  Do not know about casting but I am liking the actors chosen to play the mothers in the new movies.

I hit the mall this weekend and saw an advertisement for Midnight Bayou.  Lovely poster and very eye-catching.

I’ve gotta go with the Born In trilogy - as long as they go with actors who can do good Irish accents (or are Irish themselves).  What I wouldn’t give to see a really hunky Murphy Muldoon on screen.  Hubba hubba.

  12. krsylu said on 03.30.09 at 07:48 PM[link]

Irish Jewels, definitely. Followed closely by the Chesapeake Bay quartet. Actors? Not a clue!

    Quinn Brothers!

You know, this is a very well advertised series of movies. I first saw it surfing on amazon.com for books, then have run across ads other places as well. VERY smart, considering I barely watch TV and never tune into Lifetime and would have missed them. I’ve got them set to record so I can watch (ok, and occasional laugh) at my leisure. Most books turned movie can’t measure up to the written original in 2hours so I sit back and have fun with it.

What would I like to see next? Well I don’t know all that’s been done, but I could see the Donovan family books (captivated, entranced…) with their bit of witch/magic being awesome for the screen.

Bring in some eye candy and sit back to enjoy! :)

I’d like to see the Donovans on screen. Hell who am I kidding- I’m happy seeing *any* of them on-screen. I’m an addict, I swear.

Through87- I’ve been through 87 screaming matches with my tv and my Cards still lost!

NAKED IN DEATH has everything to make a perfect movie: mystey, suspense, a little action, and love. it’s complete all in itself and we get to see Eve and Roarke meet.

Last I heard Mel Gibson’s studio has the rights to the In Death series, so a tv movie probably won’t happen.  I’m still holding out for a movie, but i haven’t heard anything about it since his anti-semitic tirade a few years ago.

I’d have to say Pubiic Secrets - that was my first Nora Roberts book and still my favorite.

Oh so many choices!  I think I’m leaning towards the Born In trilogy.  Irish folk are sexy.

  23. ksquard said on 03.30.09 at 08:22 PM[link]

I’m with Meggrs above. I almost don’t want to see my favorites made into these films - the first foray was not encouraging and MONTANA SKY ranks as one of my all time favorite books, so that particularly was painful. I also am likely in the minority when I say keep Heather Locklear away. She acts like if she has more than one facial expression, it’ll crack her face and she emotes as well as a koala with that blank stare of hers.

I would love to see the Born In books on film if they could do it right. The Chesapeake series is my all time favorite NR PB series, so keep away from it if it ain’t gonna be done right. And I agree the Jewel and Big Sur books would be fun on film, but I’m not willing to risk Lifetime screwing those up too.  I’m a hard sell, I know, but it’s only because I’m loyal and love some of these books beyond reason.

The promo on this has been impressive though and I think the talent and quality is improving too, but again, I agree that 2 hours (really 1 1/2 with commercials) just can’t cut it. Among other things, FIOS is offering free on demand snippets you can order of La Nora herself discussion the latest book/movie of the week for five or six minutes.

Irish actor for the Born In books? Well, Colin Farrel, John Rhys Meyers and Cillian Murphy are all well known, talent Irish actors - and hot too!

I’d love to see the MacGregors brought to life.  That’d be beyond awesome, but I don’t know if any of Nora’s Silhouettes are possible stories.  As for actors, the only one who comes to mind is Angie Harmon for Serena.

Last I heard Mel Gibson’s studio has the rights to the In Death series, so a tv movie probably won’t happen.  I’m still holding out for a movie, but i haven’t heard anything about it since his anti-semitic tirade a few years ago.

The rights have long since reverted back to Nora, so while it’s possible the IDs would hit the small screen, I’m holding out for the big screen, I don’t think they’d translate to the small screen very well.

It might work as a televiosion series instead of a movie, although it didn’t work so well for Women’s Murder Club or Blood Ties.

I would like to see the In the Garden trilogy as Lifetime movies. I agree that Lifetime focuses on women, and I feel this Nora series concentrates on the heroine’s journey to love. Also, it has pregnant, lonely Hayley find love. So good!

Montana Sky was the first romance I ever read (snuck from my mom’s hidey-hole in the linen closet) and they totally bitched that movie up like DAMN.

That said, I’m a huge fan of the “Born In…” and would totally watch that (those) movie(s). I can get behind Hugh Jackman love (heh), but I hope they don’t go with some faded “TV Ugly” soap star. TV Ugly, dudes, not ugly ugly. Maybe some diversity? Whither the hott brown men, romancelandia?

I’ve always thought that In Death could be a great series on HBO. But I’m very afraid that they’d miscast Eve and Roarke, so just as well that it hasn’t happened.  If Lifetime gets the rights to any of In Death, I’m really not watching.

  31. Ezri said on 03.30.09 at 08:44 PM[link]

I’ve got to cast my vote for The Chesapeake Bay books- they’re my overall favorites and I reread the lot at least once a year.

But there are so many other wonderful choices too- how do you decide between the MacGregors or the Donovans, or between “Homeport” or “Three Fates” - you’re really coming up gold whatever you choose.

And that’s not even counting the “In Death” series- though I’m sure that it would be a daunting bit of casting to try to match up to such well-loved characters - plus the actors would then have to live up to how well-developed the characters are on the page - that’s a tall order!  But I’m hoping anyway!

It’s tough to act when you can’t really move your face. Heather has had both botox & collagen and possibly other work as well. Some people seem to have decided that puffy & frozen = youthful.

I saw her in person & up pretty close right before she started having all that crap done a few years ago and she looked fabulous.  Then her marriage broke up and that was that. Hollywood is not kind to single women in their mid-40s.

I don’t watch Burn Notice, but I remember him from the shortlived USA show Touching Evil, and he would make a great Gage.

I would LOVE to see the film version of Midnight Bayou! That’s one of my absolute favorite Nora books of all time. Anyone know where I might get my grubby little hands on a copy?

And as for which book(s) should be made into movies… well, I’m sure it would be way too complicated to actually produce (sigh), but I’d love to see The Circle Trilogy. I <3 Cian sooo much. Terribly complicated for Lifetime, though - at least as far as I remember Lifetime movies.

So, maybe the Three Sisters Island trilogy? Those were terrific stories, too. :-)

I think instead of having four books in four movies, Lifetime should consider one or two books in a two or three parter.  I know a movie is never better than a book, but this crop, to me anyway,  seemed “looser” based than normal.
On a side note, did anyone else notice Jerry Oconnel was wearing his wedding ring during the scene where DeClan was talking to his mother on the cellphone.  Opps.

ever since i started watching Bones I pictured Emily Deschanel as Eve (probably because the characters are so similar).  I never had a picture for Roarke, Peabody, or McNab, but I have always seen the woman that played Dana from The Dead Zone tv show as Nadine.  Someone once suggested Michael Easton to play Roarke…i can kinda see that, but not quite.  I can definitely see the woman you picked to play Peabody playing her (just with darker hair as you said in your blog).  Who would play Trueheart?  I have a very distinct picture of him in my head for some reason (probably because he is depicted as being closer to my age than anyone else).

I agree with Jill that the casting of the moms has been great.  Let’s face it, fewer roles for older actresses means that some awesome talent is available for those roles, even on made-for-cable movies.  I would vote for the In the Garden books or The Villa on that basis—they have great roles for middle-aged and older women.  I’d also like to see Three Fates as a movie; it seems to have a lot of visual potential.

I have a very distinct picture of him in my head

This is the reason I tend to dislike either book trailers or movies made from my favorite romance novels.  I develop a distinct impression about how the male characters look based upon the writing, and it’s most annoying when an actor or model’s face suddenly dukes it out with my imagination.  *cough* Acheron *cough*.

That said, I don’t feel quite as ...possessive? about the casting of female characters - I enjoyed Charlotte Ross’s work in Montana Sky.  I’ve always envisioned Eve Dallas looking a lot like a young Annette Bening (when she had short, choppy hair).

I don’t know who could successfully fill Roarke’s (um) shoes, but I’d love to see Jeffrey Carlson (fast forward to 2:45) test for it.  If he dyed his hair, he’d have the look.  There’s something about the length of his hair, his voice, and the bone structure of his face… Most of the work I’ve seen him do as an actor has been sexually ambiguous, and I envision Roarke as gorgeous but butch.  It would be interesting to see what he could do with it.

Well, the only Nora Roberts books I’ve read thus far are parts 1 and 2 of the Sign of Seven trilogy (just picked up part 3 today.)  I think it could be a pretty decent miniseries as long as they hired decent actors (no soap stars, please!) and the paranormal stuff wasn’t made to look completely cheesy.

I tenth the Quinn Brothers, at least I think is tenth I lost count:)

Divine Evil, with Christian Bale as Cameron Raferty.

I’d love to see Three Sisters trilogy, the Irish trilogy, and the Donovan Legacy. :)

I’ll vote for Homeport, with Henry Cavil (from the Tudors) in the lead.  Rwor.

I can’t pick just one! The Born In trilogy is wonderful and would translate to film really well I think, same with the Chesapeake Bay books (hell I just want to see what the Quinn brothers would look like lol). However my favourite Nora books are the Eve Dallas In Death series, but man, who to play Eve and Roarke? 20 years ago Roarke would have been easy, Pearce Brosnan hands down, but Eve? That’s way to hard.

Ok, now I guess I can go read all the 69 (hyuk hyuk) comments posted before mine.

I would say the Death series or The Born series!!  But any of them would be great.

The ads in the Port Authority have been cracking me up, but I am still really excited that there are so many Nora movies on TV.

also, my codeword was “hes27” which is what Jerry O’Connell looks like in the poster.  LOL

  74. Library Lady Terri said on 03.31.09 at 03:18 AM[link]

I would say the Chesapeake Bay Quartet.  Then you’d get all 4 movies at once!

  75. RachieG said on 03.31.09 at 03:34 AM[link]

I would love to see the Chesapeke Bay books get their own movie. I really loved the first one and the last one in that series..so either of those would make me super happy!!

Another vote for the Chesapeake Bay series and one for the McKades.

One of the historicals. Now I’m blanking on the name… but I think the one with Scottish chick who hates the English guy, except he really supports the Scottish cause. And then they lose at Culloden and have to flee stateside. That one would make a fabulous movie, I think. :)

  78. Hydecat said on 03.31.09 at 05:04 AM[link]

I’m afraid of having one of my very favorites made into a movie because I don’t think it could do them justice (I’ve yet to see a man as sexy as Shawn Gallagher is in my head, and I don’t know if they could pull off the 3 sisters magic without looking cheesy).

The one I *do* think would make a good movie is my favorite fluff-Roberts novel: The Winning Hand (a MacGregor story). It is short and straightforward enough to fit into a movie time slot, and sweet and funny enough to be watchable. Plus, Vegas!

  79. SpicyPlumChatni said on 03.31.09 at 05:18 AM[link]

The MacGregor series could be made into a miniseries. Especially All the Possibilities set in Washington DC, The Perfect Neighbor (James MacAvoy as the brooding Preston McQuinn and possibly Natalie Portman as Cybil Campbell) and The Winning Hand (While I am not personally fond of them, Renne Zellweger or Reese Witherspoon would be very popular as Darcy Wallace).

As for Lifetime’s focus on fun female protagonists, they could pick any of the Stanislavski sisters. Yvonne Strahovski from Chuck on NBC would make a gorgeous Natasha.

Also, I would love if the In Death series is picturised although I would hate it if they would not come up with the perfect Eve and Roark. I can think of a bunch of men as Roark but nobody as Eve.

Oh my, now that I’ve gotten started on this, I can’t stop thinking about all the other books I love and who would play the hero/heroine. Especially Bet Me by Jennifer Crusie which is my absolute favourite.
Goodbye work, and it is only Monday!

My all time fave Nora is Carnal Innocence and I am with the other commenters who also see a shirtless Matthew McConaughey as Tucker!

I might actually have to have yet another re-read of that one now that I’m thinking about it…

Alas, the trilogies probably have too much material to translate well into movies—but I’ve always been partial to the Three Sisters Island trilogy and the In the Garden trilogy, and would love to see them done. Casting, though? No idea, heh.

I would like to see the latest Blood Brothers series made into a mini-series with cool special effects to accompany the wonderful couples in the books.

Hands down, Three Fates.  I’d propose it’d be a multi-part deal, however.  I love the three intertwining love stories, but I felt that the Lifetime production of Montana Sky, which also has three intertwining stories, spent so much time scrambling to accommodate all three romances that it barely touched the real meat of the book.  I still vote Three Fates, though!

  84. sugarless said on 03.31.09 at 06:32 AM[link]

ah, shows how much attention I pay (I don’t watch TV while I’m at school)

I’ll have to keep an eye out for it

If it were a series, not just a two-hour movie, i’d love to see them do the Born Ins or Chesapeake books.  But since they are so limited in time, I’d like to see what they’d do with a category, as it might be easier to translate into two hours.  The Mackades or Second Nature/One Summer would be great as a series, but as a stand-alone… hmn.  I’ll go with Local Hero.  Or The Art of Deception.  Or maybe The Law is a Lady,  Dual Image, or Partners.  If they want the woo factor, maybe Mind over Matter. Any number of these (or the rest of her backlist for that matter) would be great movies.

    Diane :o)

I have this one but haven’t read yet! (Don’t put me in the contest, thanks) I forgot to set up the DVR to record the movies! I’m sure they are on again so I must do that! I did see a couple of the movies they had based on Nora’s books the last time.  MONTANA SKY was my favorite!  I loved mostly the earlier books and the Robb books.  One of my favorites was a historical! I think it would be so neat to put the Macgregors into a mini series!! If not at least THE REBELLION into a movie!  As for casting, I’m not good with knowing the actors and all but I do love how Tim Daly did OUTSIDER based on Penelope Williamson’s book and Nicole Kidman (I thought she does great in historical movies too) So I’d pick them for the roles of Serena MacGregor and English Lord Brigham Langston.

If they could do the magic well, I’d like the “Born In” books as well. They were the books that I really enjoyed the most.

I’ll add an vote for The Villa. Three generations, suspense, love and beautiful scenery.

And I would like to see Colin Farrell as Roarke.  Or Hugh Jackman. Either would have to use blue contacts anyway.

    My dream for “In Death”

    Production: Showtime or HBO
Series; at least first 3 books so the HEA is gotten to
Casting: Gerald Butler and Hilary Swank for Roark and Eve (just watch P.S I love you for the chemistry, and they are both great actors)
Summerset: James Cromwell (Babe and L.A. Confidencial)

That is my dream…Why HBO/Showtime? Production value, Lifetime does not provide it or great direction.
Why those actors? Well Gerald makes a lovely Scotsman playing an Irishman, and Hilary has been my choice for Eve ever since the Icon deal a few years back. She has the dip in the chin, the build, and even the ability to be tough. (The woman’s academy awards were earned).

I think that the best book for this format would be Three Fates, provided they cast it well.  Now I’d just have to think who could play those hunky Sullivan brothers.

  91. snarkhunter said on 03.31.09 at 01:14 PM[link]

Hm. I like the suggestion of “The Villa,” above, but I’m going to have to with…shoot. What is that trilogy called? I always think of it as the Irish Jewels trilogy—the Gallaghers? “Jewels of the Sun,” etc.

If only b/c Darcy throwing things would be hilarious on screen.

  92. Kimberly said on 03.31.09 at 01:35 PM[link]

Hmmm- I think the Donovan legacy would be fun as well as the “Sign of Seven” trilogy.  I have no idea about casting though.

I daresay I’m not all that on top of those “Hollywood-types” these days.

Might I also say, I got an email from “Turn the Page” bookstore and congratulations to Sarah for doing a book signing there next month.  Awesome!

The Chesepeake series is really good. I would love to see it made into a movie.

  94. Kim said on 03.31.09 at 02:36 PM[link]

Since I just recently read them (I know, where have I been???) I have to say I think the Donovan stories would make good movies. With the Lifetime value of good being applied, natch.

I loved the book Sanctuary to distraction. I’ve tried to watch the movie multiple times and just can’t do it.

  95. Sabrina said on 03.31.09 at 03:07 PM[link]

Oh yes, The Born In Series. I’m super excited about these movies - I’ve also seen some tie-ins in Borders stores. some of those photos though are horrible - they look like the two people took the photos seperately and they fused them together!

  96. Jennie said on 03.31.09 at 03:58 PM[link]

I’d love the Born series, or the Garden series to be made into movies.  The In Death series, not so much.  Between not wanting to ruin the images I have of those characters in my head, and really really really thinking they should have a movie theater quality production, it would be a huge disappointment to have them done by Lifetime.

OK, what in the name of all things holy is wrong with those promotional posters. They are atrocious! They look like something that should show up in the cover mocking section. Someone needs to back away from Poser and Photoshop right damn now.

And LeAnne Rimes as the Meg? What?! Meg is a brunette! Just… no. And did anyone notice they have her name wrong on the blurb about the movie on the website? She’s referred to as Meg Galligan instead of Meg Galloway. Did they actually change her name for the movie or did they just not proof read their website? And why the heck would they change her last name?

This is part of why I’ve shied away from all of the Nora Roberts movies, despite really loving some of these books. It just seems like the casting director went to IMDB and started choosing people at random. I mean fine, if you’re going to cast LeAnne Rimes, whatever, but can you at least buy the girl a dark wig?

  99. Liz said on 03.31.09 at 04:22 PM[link]

Summerset: James Cromwell (Babe and L.A. Confidencial)

    He would be absolutely perfect!

I knew something was off!  i haven’t read the book since it came out, so i couldn’t figure out what was wrong!  I wouldn’t be surprised if they changed the last name; I honestly don’t remember what they called her in the movie.  I mean they changed the names of what of the possible dads in Mamma Mia and that was actually in the movies.  So, lifetime doing that wouldn’t surprise me.

I vote for the Irish Hearts.  These two were my first, and probably will be my favorites forever!

  101. Kercelia said on 03.31.09 at 05:09 PM[link]

As much as I enjoy all of Nora’s novels, my pick would have to be the Key trilogy.  They had a perfect balance of suspense, mystery, and romance!  It’s been awhile since I read them, so I don’t have any particular actors in mind to fill the starring roles.

  102. Jamie said on 03.31.09 at 05:18 PM[link]

I think that the production values on any Lifetime move of the In Death series would be too cheap.  It needs a big movie budget to do the futuristic theme justice.  The more relationship centered smaller stories (not that the Roarke/Dallas relationship isn’t central) would translate better to the smaller screen.  I agree with most of the posts: I hated the Lifetime version of Montana Sky.  I would like to see the Quinn brothers done right but am apprehensive about casting and potential Lifetime cringe-inducing casting and dialogue.

  103. Marcia in OK said on 03.31.09 at 05:33 PM[link]

Even though the movies will never be as good as the books, I’ll still watch any Nora the make into a movie.

I’d like to see the Born In sisters, and the Quinn Brothers on the screen.  And, any of the Silhouettes would make good movies.  Not as much going on and they could focus on the characters.  (So much has to be left out of the longer books to meet the time limit of a movie.

  104. L said on 03.31.09 at 06:44 PM[link]

I’ll throw in a vote for Irish Jewels trilogy :-)

And for the record, I’ve often thought that a movie just called “Hugh Jackman Naked” would be the number one grossing movie of the year. Wouldn’t we all go see it every day? It would also be number one most profitable because how expensive can it be to just film Hugh Jackman going about his daily life completely starkers?
