Heroes, Heroines, and Hotness

by SB Sarah | February 15, 2008 | Friday at 2:44 am | 137 Comments

Thanks to Michelle Styles and Cat Marters, my Bitchery correspondents from across the pond, I have a link that gave Candy and myself a good half-hour of enjoyment. Seems the RNA has voted amongst its membership to come up with the perfect romantic heroes. Details? But of course!

Members of the Romantic Novelists’ Association have voted Johnny Depp as the Number One Perfect Romantic Hero in a poll to mark Valentine’s Day. According to these authors, a romantic hero should be gorgeous, deliciously sexy, intensely masculine and have a commanding presence.

‘We should be qualified to judge,’ one writer commented. ‘After all, we create these heroes on paper every day.’

The top ten male celebrities voted the Perfect Romantic Hero were:

1.            Johnny Depp
2.            Daniel Craig
3.            Sean Bean
4.            Richard Armitage
5.            Hugh Jackman
6.            Colin Firth
7.            Alan Rickman
8.            Pierce Brosnan
9.            George Clooney
10.          David Tennant

A second poll, taken by members of the RNA bravely admitting to being ‘over a certain age’, voted for male celebrities over fifty who’ve ‘still got it’.  Remarkable for his appearance on both polls, Pierce Brosnan took the crown for the over fifties by a huge margin.

The top ten Over-Fifty Perfect Romantic Heroes were:

1.            Pierce Brosnan
2.            Harrison Ford
3.            Ranulph Fiennes
4.            Bill Nighy
5.            Liam Neeson
6.            Sam Neill
7.            Sean Connery
8.            Peter O’Toole
9.            Clint Eastwood
10.          Omar Sharif

Sarah: I can think of many dudes who would make a better romantic hero than some of these fellows.

And what is up with the homogenized list o’ white dudes?

Candy: I

<3 Johnny Depp as much as the next girl. I mean, I've had a hard-on for him for over 20 years. But "intensely masculine"? Dude, part of the reason why he's so hot is because he flirts heavily with androgyny and masculine stereotypes.

And yeah, most of these guys seem to be "sensitive character actor" types. Were they specifically looking at actors?

Hot non-white actors:

Andy Lau (bitch, you knew this was coming)
Takeshi Kaneshiro (you knew this was coming, too)
Chow Yuen Fat
Jet Li
Denzel Washington (who in their right mind doesn't think he's hot?)
Omar Epps
Lawrence Fishburne (he's really not my physical type--too big and burly--but something about his physicality is tres sexy)
Tyrese (I haven't seen him in any good movies, really, but for sheer eye candy…. Goddamn.)
Also: if Morgan Freeman weren't old enough to be my grandfather, I'd totally hit it. Hard.

Sarah: I see you on Omar Epps, and totally knew Andy Lau was coming (hur) even though his spangly silver pants scare me a little.

I raise you (hur hur):

Alejandro Sanz (hot guitarist)
Javier Bardem
Alejandro Fernández
And hell, if we’re talking Of a Certain Age, Clint Eastwood is fine.

And the reason Depp is hot is exactly as you say: he preserves his masculinity while playing with lithe androgyny.

Heck, let’s not limit it to guys - what about heroines? There are some truly heroic and stunning women out there, too.

Candy: Katee Sackhoff
Laura Prepon
Emma Thompson
Helena Bonham-Carter

Hmmm. Not too many other names are coming to mind, because most actresses are thin to the point of looking wasted, which isn’t attractive to me. I tend to like my girls a bit more muscular. (Bonham-Carter is scary-thin, except she’s incredibly talented and has this mild edge of HOLYSHITCRAZY, which is hot. It’s the same thing with PJ Harvey.)

Sarah: I could stare at Keira Knightley, except I wish that she didn’t disappear when she turns sideways. It’s a shame, that part.

And dude. Catherine Deneuve must be the proof of alien life the Scientologists have been looking for, because she’s so ineffably stunning. Gives me hope that I may age 1/1000th as gracefully.

So who is your hero or heroine of choice? Pics, links, bring ‘em on!

i had to delurk (again) for this one…Cillian Murphy/Jonathan Rhys Meyers/Jon Stewart, or Patrick Stewart for the “over a certain age category.”
heroines: Rose Byrne, Romola Garai, Elaine Cassidy, Naomi Harris.
it’s not like i spend a lot of time thinking about this or anything…

Which just proves how individual we are in these matters.  Because IMO some of these are hot, some are not, and they missed some real cuties!

  3. nina armstrong said on 02.15.08 at 03:08 AM • [comment link]

Well, if we don’t have to stick to actors-i’m going to go with a writer-Neil Gaiman-that vaguely gothy look, the sheepdog hair, the accent, er. yeah.
      Heroine-Claire Danes.

  4. Liz C. said on 02.15.08 at 03:16 AM • [comment link]

I’m not sure who would be my picks except that I wholeheartedly agree with the pick of Richard Armitage. His performance in “North and South” should be a performance all other actors aspire to when trying to be broody and OMG!Hot.

Hmm. Add Jamie Bamber to that list as well. He may be shorter than I prefer but by god he works it for all he’s worth.

As for heroines, I agree with Candy’s list, but I would also add Catherine Zeta-Jones and Rachel Weisz.

I’m sorry, Johnny Depp =/ intensely masculine. One of the reasons I love him (and love Jack Sparrow) is his rather fey demeanor. He’s not quite to David Bowie levels of androgynous, but he’s not far off.

And androgyny = h0tt. Give me a boy in eyeliner any day.

(Hee!! Spambot word: married57. Nope. Which is why I’m spending yet another V-day w/ yummy yummy chinese food, a glass of wine, and an affectionate kitty.)

  6. Sarabeth said on 02.15.08 at 03:18 AM • [comment link]

No list is complete without Denzel Washington, and I completely adore Will Smith. Chow Yun Fat must be on the list. Where’s Antonio Banderas?

Yep, Johnny Depp is tops because he is not overwhelmingly male.

I also second Patrick Stewart for the still got it over fifty. Wouldn’t kick him out of bed for eating crackers.

    For Hero:
George Clooney, Cary Elwes, Robert Redford, Liam Neeson, Eric Bana, Clive Owen, Ewan MacGregor, Brendan Fraser,

    For Heroine:
Catherine Zeta-Jones, Angelina Jolie, Sandra Bullock, Lauren Bacall, Kate Beckinsale

  8. Randi said on 02.15.08 at 03:28 AM • [comment link]

Yeah, where did Antonio Banderas go? And Will Smith? And totally Chow Yun Fat (over Jet Li, not a big Jet Li gal). And if we can expand into other categories, I gotta go with Ricky Martin. I know, I know, he might not play with my team, but still. Hunky and manly! I’ll also add Patrick Stewart to the over-50’s category. I will have to say, not so big a fan of Han Solo these days. I do believe his time has come and gone. But in his hey day; hoo-baby!

Ladies: Can we say Halle Berry? Or Jada Pinket-Smith? Or um, crap, see what the flu does to the brain…the chick in the new Eye movie; and Shakira-but only if she just stands there. All that moving around makes my head dizzy.  And before she died, I would have listed Jessica Tandy as listing in the over 50; her whole demeanor was just beatuous.

any25: in the last four days, 25 minutes is about how much sleep I’ve gotten at any one time. damn flu.

Christopher Eccleston—never saw him before Dr. Who, but he brought a kind of working class scruf to the role.  Helen Mirren—I thought she was hot as Jane Tennant.  Robson Green as Tony in Wire in the Blood.  Amanda Burton in Silent Witness.  That show was not the same after she left.

I know, I’m such a British TV Geek.

Another vote for Shahrukh Khan. Also Fardeen Khan, Abhishek Bachchan (and his father Amitabh in the over-50 category), Govinda, and Tushar Kapoor.

    I loves me some Bollywood.

I second Rachel Weisz.  Also always been a Julia Stiles fan (Of the Bourne movies amongst others)l; I like her because she’s a real person size.

Where’s my Keifer?  I’d marry Jack Bauer in a heartbeat - and I’ve noticed the lists seem to focus on the characters these people play more than the people themselves. (see George Clooney who flirts a bit too close to androgyny for my taste).

    Gael Garcia Bernal
    Adam Beach
    Jason Momoa
    Djimon Hounsou

    Over 50:
    Hellloooo, Paul Newman!
Ian McKellen is gay but that’s not stopping me from lusting after him in my heart.
Charles Dutton is a big old cutie pie.

Heroines: Tilda Swinton, Jennifer Tilly,  Salma Hayek, Angela Bassett

i second takeshi kaneshiro, and rachel weisz. and what about zhang ziyi? and li gong and michelle yeoh from memoirs of a geisha (at least, that’s why they are linked in my mind.)

    Jeremy Irons. You know it.

In the still young category - James Marsden - JAMES MARSDEN. Every movie he’s in must be science fictional because it’s physically impossible for him to lose that many girlfriends to people like Ryan Gosling.

Also - Patrick Dempsey. Dude has aged VERY well. He + James Marsden = “Enchanted” Manwich.

  22. Liz C. said on 02.15.08 at 04:31 AM • [comment link]

    POST PICTURES, LADIES!!

I’m toggling between the comments here and Google images (Takeshi Kaneshiro, oh my yes), and as fun as that is proving, if we could have zillion Hoff macros here in the comments, then we can see some Oded Fehr in the flesh too.

Use the following html code to insert an image in your comment(but make sure the picture is not too big upon the screen):
    <img scr=“website address”>

‘website address’ must be the URL that leads to the picture. For example, inserting:
    http://news.ninemsn.com.au/img/arias/daniel_johns_g.jpg
into the above code gives you pretty, pretty Daniel Johns from Silverchair:

  28. Goblin said on 02.15.08 at 04:59 AM • [comment link]

Crap. Of course there’s a typo. The code you should be using is:

    <img src=“website address”>

    (i.e. I switched the “r” and “c” in “src”)

For heroines, I submit Lena Headey.  Throw Summer Glau in there too.  (Can you tell I’m liking the new Terminator series just a touch?)

Teddypig, I think Angelina has crazy sexy all over HBC, but I like Helena too.

Also, I’m deeply glad someone brought up Oded Fehr. SOOOOOO hot!

And, yeah, he’s pure white bread, but I’d like a side of Jeffrey Dean Morgan served up to me. He’s all big…and brawny. Love him!

I’m an exception to the universal female rule, because I’d drink beer with Johnny Depp but I wouldn’t sleep with him. I dunno. If you watch “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas” a few times all thoughts of sex just die off.

Not a bad list but Clive Owen is my number one hero and I’ve been in and out of love with Brad Pitt for fifteen years. Oh, and Clooney - just gorgeous.

For non-white, Sendhil Ramamurthy from Heroes burns my retinas. That man is beautiful.

Girl-crushes: Angelina Jolie, Rachel Weisz, Scarlett Johanssen, Natalie Portman, Julianne Moore…

  34. Sarabeth said on 02.15.08 at 05:31 AM • [comment link]

Teddy Pig, Angelina Jolie has the crazy sexy going on, but we must also love HBC for her early normal girl work. She’s so innocent in Room with a view.

  35. Madeleine said on 02.15.08 at 05:34 AM • [comment link]

    James Purefoy
    Rufus Sewell
    Sendhil Ramamurthy
Will Smith (he is just so incredibly charming)
    Christopher Eccleston
    Toby Stephens
    Chiwetel Ejiofor

Peter O’Toole could be my (great?-)grandfather, but I would probably still jump him if I thought I could get away with it. (Also, David Bowie.) Cary Grant, if he weren’t dead. Montgomery Clift if he weren’t dead and tragically gay.

And my Pretty Boy pick is Karan Panthaky, even though I’ve only ever seen him in one thing.

YES to Denzel Washington, and to Morgan Freeman and Chow Yun Fat.  Also yes to the very different appeal of androgynes, but that’s not what we get in traditional romance, is it girls?

Ewan MacGregor.  Liam Neeson. Ralph AND Joseph Fiennes (like I’d survive THAT). Ioan Gruffudd.  I want to get some of those Scots, Irishmen and Welsh dudes in here, because I love me those accents.  And I gravitate to them over the Greek/Italian/Spanish types in romance heroes.  And a big FAT yes to Alan Rickman, anywhere, anytime.

Can we put Robert Redford in there with Paul Newman?  And I’m going to pretend that Gregory Peck is still alive…hmmm, hmmm, hmmmm…...

    *Oded Fehr
    *Naveen Andrews
    *Colin Firth
    *Gerard friggin’ Butler
*And Johnny Depp, for regency fop heroes (Georgette Heyer, anyone?)

I would do dirty, dirty things to these men. Gleefully. Sadly, Harrison Ford has fallen off this list (old age sure did catch up with that man in a hurry…)

  39. SonomaLass said on 02.15.08 at 05:39 AM • [comment link]

Oh yes, and a side note on the poll itself.  Why do you suppose the general membership chose Alan Rickman in the top ten, but he didn’t make the “Over Fifty” list?  The man is 62, and obviously he’s still “got it” or he wouldn’t be on the other list, LOL.

    I think that’s fascinating.

OMG Takeshi Kaneshiro.  He has a FABULOUS smile.

Also?  Shin Koyamada.  He whom we dubbed “the Japanese Orlando Bloom” until he whipped out the bow in The Last Samurai, at which point we started calling him “the Japanese Legolas” instead.

Taye Diggs, too.  He’s got lovely bone structure.

  41. Madeleine said on 02.15.08 at 05:42 AM • [comment link]

Oh, I can’t believe I forgot Paul Newman AND Ralph Fiennes. Damn it. That was dumb. They are both achingly hot.

Joseph Fiennes used to be hot. Now he just looks like Nicholas Farrell - but Nicholas Farrell looks way better now than he did when JFiennes was still smoking. So strange! Maybe they switched.

David Tennant should at least be on the top FIVE.

    1. Johnny Depp
    2. Pierce Brosnan
    3. Hugh Jackman
    4. David Tennant
    5. Alan Rickman
    6. Jet Li (cause Lord knows that man gives me goosebumps just watching him MOVE)
    7. Liam Neeson
    8. Sam Neill
    9. Antonio Banderas
    10. Mike He

    and that’s just ten.

I have trouble listing men as to their hotness level since they are ALL hot. Some stand out more than others, like… Pierce Brosnan. The man’s a CAVE MAN. Fuzzy and sexy and he makes me revert to my cave woman mentality just looking at him. HIM GOOD. HIM MAKE GOOD BABIES. MM! >.> plus the hair makes me wanna snuggle.

Johnny Depp is… well, it’s been established, he’s freakin’ hot and I’m joining the bandwagon. >.>

David Tennant got jipped. He should be in the top five, in my opinion. He’s sexy because he’s, as far as I’ve seen of him acting normally, very sweet and funny and very quick minded. As an actor, he can sing and dance and can play an absolute FREAK or a very jovial Timelord. He’s just so all around wonderful!

My favorite men include Jonny Depp, Antonio Banderas, and Brad Pitt. I also adored River Phoenix when he was alive.

I’ve never heard of altogether too many of these people.

Daniel Craig?  Isn’t he that Idaho senator who was busted in the Minneapolis restroom?

And what about the still-hot Tom Brokaw? and Scott Bakula?  I still fancy Kevin Sorbo and Dean Cain, you know. And Sam Waterston, whom I first fell in love with back in 1973 in the TV version of Joe Papp’s production of MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING.  I like Peter Coyote, too.

And I wouldn’t kick Dominic Purcell out of the burrow for eating crackers, as long as he didn’t have his head shaved.  Unless, of course, James MARSTERS was next in line…

What IS up with the homogonised list of white dudes? I’m glad Sarah asked, so I don’t have to.

SRK has to be in there somewhere, but my major Bollywood crushes are Saif Ali Khan, Aamir Khan, and Hrithik Roshan (if he didn’t come across as a bit of a dick in interviews).

    Men (in no particular order):

    SRK,
    Saif,
    Aaamir,
    Hrithik,
    Takeshi Kaneshiro,
    Christian Bale,
    Will Smith,
    Chiwetel Ejiofor,
    Gong Yoo,
that really pretty man from ‘Love, Actually’,
    Tony Leung,
    Omar Epps,
    Edward Norton,
    Lee Min Ki,
    Oded Fehr…
I need to cut this list down.

Johnny Depp only when he looks deathly (Sweeney Todd, Sleepy Hollow). Let’s not look into that too deeply.

Amitabh Bachan for the older men, he’s better looking than his son (but then I’d say the same about Jaya Bachan and her daughter-in-law Aishwarya Rai).

(Morgan Freeman is too much like my Dad, but he’s a handsome man)

    For heroines (no particular order):
    Michelle Yeoh,
    Rachel Weis,
    Gina Torres,
    Kajol Devgan,
    Maki Horikita,
    Catherine Zeta Jones,
    Emma Thompson,
    Gong Li,
    Rani Mukherjee,
    Koyuki,
    Freema Agyeman,

Well, I’m going to give a yes, yes, YES! to numbers 1, 3 and 4.

I have to agree also with some of the above especially Gerard Butler who is my current unhealthy crush and Blair Underwood also deserves a very high rating. Just devine. Ooh and Javier Bardem too.

I’m also going to add Kyle Schmid (Henry from Blood Ties) - he’s a leeeetle bit young but I just don’t give a damn.

How about a Canadian newscaster, Ian Hanomansing? (You’ll have to take my word for it that about 10-15 years ago, he could make me drool at the television.)

I think Christopher Lee is still hot in a brooding, EVAL way.

And Toshiro Mifune was a fine example of rugged good looks.

(Also, Vincent Price. I was attracted to my husband because he looks and sounds somewhat like Vincent Price…)

After tonight’s episode of “Lost”, Naveen Andrews rocketed back up my list. Sweet mother of mercy, that is a fine man. So is Josh Holloway, and so is Terry O’Quinn.

Chris Eccleston and David Tennant, my two favorite Timelords, with a side order of John Simm! Seriously, men dancing in the 70s shouldn’t be able to be sexy, but John Simm did it in “Life on Mars”.

Sean Bean. Sean Bean. Sean Bean. *mews*

And I’ll plug for my personal longtime crush, Christopher Meloni. I stuck with SVU for many a long season just for the chance of seeing his arms in a Tshirt or his butt in jeans.

Oh, this is fun!  :)  Richard Armitage is just Hawt!  And his voice is like warm melted chocolate.  Yum!

Johnny Depp (especially in Chocolat! Yum)

Gerard Butler (“This is Sparta!)  Mrowr!

Patrick Stewart is one sexy bald man

I gotta say I think Bruce Willis is hotter now than he’s ever been

Clint Eastwood (especially in his spaghetti western days.  *sigh*)

When he first started out on ER, Goran Visnjic was hot, but now he just looks old.

    Clive Owen

    Michael Vartan

    Ken Watanabe

    Jet Li

And David Tenant is hot in a geeky way.  Gotta love the geeky.  :)

There are so many more, but I’m seriously brainfarting.  Still, I’m super psyched that RM made #4!  Yay!

I totally agree with Patrick Steward and Yul Brynner. Definitely two hot bald men.

Then there’s Christian Bale (anyone else have a total Batman fetish?), Edward Norton, and I have yet to hear of the hotness of Ryan Reynolds. C’mon… Blade Trinity? Shirtless and tied up??? Hello?

And how about props to some athletes? David Carr of the Houston Texans comes to mind (and plays in nicely with the SBTB’s previous post)

The woman looks like a china doll. Even at close to fifty. Halle Berry also has that too-lovely-to-be-real quality. But Ms. Pfeiffer has the distinction of being my age. And I never looked that good. Never.

Michelle Pfeiffer has always been the one on the top of my “If I were a lesbian list” - she still remains. I echo Gina Torres - I loved her in Hercules, Firefly, and Angel. Angelina does have the crazy/sexy thing going. Lastly, Ms. Rai is a beautiful woman.

Men: Naveen Andrews, Josh Holloway. Daniel Dae Kim (they so don’t show him enough), Gerard “smoking hot” Butler, Scott Bakula, James Marsters, Olivier Martinez, and Maurice Bernard (who currently plays Sonny Corinthos on “General Hospital”)

    Older men:

Well if Howard Keel were still alive, I’d be all over him. That man can sing!

Johnny Depp is totally a manbian, and he’s slightly enough to the girly side that I would do him.

*cough*Keanu Reeves*cough* I just want him to not attempt to look like he is “thinking” or “talking”. I tried to tell my friends I went to see that crap movie Constantine because of Rachel Weisz, but it really wasn’t just her. Or Tilda Swinton.

Lenny Kravitz. Ok, I don’t normally do butch men, but he was just the sexayist manbeast. He’s not an actor, but who cares?

I am of the Ralph Fiennes fanclub as well. Oh dear. I had the hots for Pierce Brosnan in the 80s, but not so much now. Alan Rickman, ooh la la, but I do think he hit his peak about a decade ago (I know, but I’m not his target audience).

As for Naveen Andrews, if he wore his hair long again, I would go straight (as in het) for him and have his babies.

But where is my Kate Winslet? Please! Intelligent, sexy, doesn’t disappear when she turns sideways.

Jada Pinkett is cute with cute on top. And so is Drew Barrymore. I think I’m the only dyke who doesn’t have the hots for Angelina Jolie… maybe I’d have a roll in the hay, but a relationship? Not so much.

Jennifer Beals - I had such a crush on her when I was 16, and now she’s pretty much the only reason I watch The L Word. I’m ashamed to say how surprised I was at how good her acting is. Hot, onto-it and intelligent. What else does one need?

    Hot men?
I can’t argue with any choices, but I have additions

How did they miss Oded Fehr, as everyone else has been asking?

If that mouth doesn’t make you have wicked thoughts, I want to take your pulse.

How about Michael Ealy?  Gorgeous, and those amazing blue eyes…

I’m surprised no one has mentioned Gabriel Byrne

What about a pair of hot men who look amazingly alike, Gail Harold and Nathan Fillion? (sorry, short of pics)

Christopher Lee definitely falls in the “Still Hot” group.  My daughter has had a crush since she was 13, which she finds very disturbing, since it’s not on the young and sexy Lee, but on Saruman and Cout Dooku era Lee.

    But on the Ladies’ side:
    Michelle Pfeiffer
    Anjelica Huston

And on the “Gay but I’d go there,” anyone for John Glover?  I’ve had it bad since Gremlins 2.

Hayden Christenson and Ian McKellan also make this category.

I’m trying to put in a picture but *shrugs* may not work

I agree with so much of the above, Johnny Depp, Vin Diesel, Oded Fehr, Will Smith, Alan Rickmen (that voice…ohhhh la la), Morgan Freeman(again the voice), Helene Bonham Carter, Julia Stiles.

    *sigh*

Will Smith is one of my favorite actors ever and he is totally hot. I have a real thing for Matt Damon from the Bourne movies—I could watch him kick ass all day. I’m old enough that I was 13 when the first Star Wars movie came out and Han Solo. Sigh. Harrison Ford has always been hot to me. Then I found out he’s the same age as my dad and that sorta freaked me out. Sean Connery and Patrick Stewart—there’s something about Patrick that’s just so sexy. Wesley Snipes is hot.

I don’t watch TV so it’s hard for me to say any of the current hot guys. I have a thing for guys in the movies. Russell Crowe is an ass in real life but he’s sexy. The Rock isn’t bad—must be the muscles. After watching the Ocean movies, 11,12, and 13 last week—I now think George Clooney and Brad Pitt are pretty sexy. I didn’t before.

OMG. Aragorn. Just give me Aragorn. Viggo Mortensen is so freaking hot in that trilogy I just want to eat him up. In other movies he’s good looking, but as Aragorn—mmmmmmmmm. I’d forget I’m married for him.

Viggo Mortenson, Sean Bean, Karl Urban, Ian McKellen, David Wenham, Christopher Lee, Bernard Hill, even Orlando Bloom, though I prefer him dark and now that he’s grown up a little. And Sala Baker, even without all his orc-y enhancements, is fine.

    http://www.theonering.net/scrapbook/movies/characters/lurtz/view/4427?g=1

I am a shallow, middle aged lady.  My idea of the ideal chick flick is one with half naked men, some reasonable characterization, and a plot with few holes.  “Pathfinder” got a whole lot less interesting, and I noticed just how crappy the plot was, when Karl Urban put clothes on half way through. Until then, I hadn’t really cared.

Some delicious suggestions here!  I’m firmly in the Richard Armitage camp (yes, yes, a thousand times yes, I could do some VERY naughty things to that man), I’ve based two heroes on him already, and am thinking of a third.

Other yummilicious men I’ve based heroes on: David Tennant, Hugh Jackman, Orlando Bloom, Heath Ledger (sob!), Clive Owen, Nathan Fillion, James Marsters, David Boreanaz, Marc Warren, Jonas Armstrong.  And one on George Chakiris, circa West Side Story.

For heroines, my latest was actually based on Freema Agyeman (who makes my brother whimper when she appears on screen).  Past heroines were inspired by Shannyn Sossamon, Summer Glau, Thandie Newton, Laura Fraser.  I’d also second Kate Winslet and Rose Byrne (does anyone else think they look really similar?).  I once based a heroine on a woman I met at the pub.

And on a personal note: Angelina Jolie?  Mad as a bag of cats, but I still definitely would.

Sean Patrick Thomas- but only in Save the Last Dance.

Which leads me to my mad love for Julia Stiles. *sigh*. So gorgeuous.

    Oded Fehr. Check.
    Gerry Butler. Check.

There isn’t a guy alive who hasn’t already been mentioned in this thread, so I’ll keep quiet. My only thoughts?

    Woah Damn.

P.S. Candy is exactly right re: Johnny Depp. Silly ladies at the RNA. Also, item #3 on the over-50 list is undoubtedly supposed to be Ralph Fiennes (not Ranulph), yeah?

Ralph and Joseph Fiennes. Can’t pronounce their effin’ names, but check.

Ah, and someone beat me to Ioan Gruffudd, too!

    Damn this thread.

    What about Chang Chen?

No Katie, it’s Ranulph, as in the explorer: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ranulph_Fiennes (Ralph Fiennes is a distant cousin—he’s also five years below the cutoff age!).  There was some discussion amongst RNA-ers about Real Men, and his name inevitably popped up. My favourite story is the one where he got tired of waiting for a surgeon to cut off his frostbitten fingers, and did it himself in his garden shed.

Thank you for the Richard Burton, Tal - though not the best pic of him.  Not as I remember him on stage at the Old Vic in 1956…

But Richard Burton aside, the ultimate gorgeous male now no longer with us is here:

OMG YES on the Ian Hanomansing! I totally forgot he existed (I moved from a place where I could get Canadian television to a place where I can’t) until you posted the picture of him.

I’ll also add with the mad love of Christopher Eccleston and throw in an Adrien Brody, for good measure.

    Heh, spamblocker: happened77 . . . well, no, happened82, but my parents got married in 77 . . .

Yay, somebody else likes John Glover, the main reason I cannot let go of Smallville. Well, him and Alison Mack on the girl’s side. Also Justin Hartely, and even Tom Welling.

    Other over 50’s
Anthony Stewart Head (at least as Giles, whoa)
Jason Isaacs (if I join the Dark Lord, I can has Lucius Malfoy?)

    Under 50’s:
    David Boreanz (circa Bones)
    James Marsters
    Ben Browder

    Women:
    Sarah Michelle Gellar
    Amber Benson
    Claudia Black

A few more who haven’t been mentioned:

    Dominic West
    Lance Reddick
    Dougray Scott
Bailey Chase (seriously hot in Saving Grace)
Masi Oka (geeky, but so cute)
    Paul Blackthorne

And for women, Sela Ward. Beautiful and, from what I’ve seen in person, very genuine.

Me too! I would be in heaven if they created a show starring Justin Hartley, Allison Mack, and John Glover.

And I cannot believe I forgot Claudia Black.

    Yes! Ian Hanomansing fangirls unite!

*laughs* I am so glad to hear I’m not the only one who drools over that man!

I tell ya, back when Ian was a cub reporter? I loved it whenever he presented a story, but mercy, I don’t think I heard a single word that beautiful creature said…

I came late to this thread but I’m enjoying it like whoa.

The first person I thought of was Oded Fehr which you Smart Bitches have pointed out. But what about the rest of the gorgeous men in ‘The Mummy’?

Brendan Fraser, Arnold Vosloo, and even John Hannah. Its a smorgasbord of yummy!

I loved Heath Ledger, and watching him kiss Jake Gyllenhaal nearly made me implode. I still get melty when I think of it.

I agree with Jennifer Beals and Angelina. Also, Sophia Loren, at any age, I dream of.

Just to throw in my own group:
    Steve Valentine
    Adam Rodriguez
    Rory Cochrane
    Gordon Michael Woolvett

and for a very beautiful girl:
    Khandi Alexander

(don’t mind the insane amount of CSI: Miami)

I had no idea who Ranulph Fiennes was—very, very cool! Thanks Cat.

Also, I didn’t realize there was a cut-off age for the over-50 category—I thought it simply meant the women voting were over 50!

This is a lovely, lovely thread.

glad to see someone else mentioned Hyde, but, I have to say Gackt and Lee-Hom Wang are nice too.. I think I need to watch Moon Child again..

Keith Hamilton Cobb…looks…and that voice. Yowza! Also, for his obvious talent at martial arts plus that dead-sexy grin (when he’s not playing implacable yet tortured), I’d have to say Wesley Snipes.

For the over-50 crowd, Patrick Stewart doesn’t float my boat but whoo boy, Jean-Luc Picard certainly does. (A clear case where the character is much more personally appealing than the actor.) For actor more appealing than character, it’d be Sean Connery, no contest.

Word: know78. Oh yes, sista, I know it!

Danica Mckellar for the hot babe category. I mean she’s one of two actresses with a finite Erdos Bacon number

    http://www.di2.nu/200707/31b.htm

Not sure about the hot guy thing though but I can certainly understand candy’s Jet Li nomination

PS Verification word - services57 - 57 services I can perform on Ms Mckellar?

F*** yes Takeshi Kaneshiro!  First time I’ve ever seen his hawtness being drooled over by someone other than me, I felt like cheering!

I’d also add Tyson Beckford and Raine Maida (from Our Lady Peace)

Boo for Pierce Brosnan.  He chased me and my friends down in London…thought 007 was going to kill us for asking to take a picture with him!  Which, would be a really interesting story about how we died, but what a freaking D-bag.

Johnny Depp =/ intensely masculine. One of the reasons I love him (and love Jack Sparrow) is his rather fey demeanor. He’s not quite to David Bowie levels of androgynous, but he’s not far off.
