Harlequin: Not Just eBooks. Innovation Comes Standard

First, Harlequin Mills & Boon is celebrating a year of ebooks by offering… free ebooks. At Everyone’s Reading.com, you can download one free ebook form each of their lines, including Deanna Raybourn’s Silent in the Grave, which I really enjoyed, and two M&B Modern, which I generally enjoy a LOT of a lot.
But here’s the cool part: click on any of the covers, and the download options include epub, mobi, OR you can text “books” to a given number to receive the book ON Your PHONE.
That, to quote someone at Mills & Boon at some point, is bloody brilliant! Way to go M&B and congratulations on a year of digital books.
And over here on this side of the pond, up in Canada, a lovely Bitchery reader named, well, Canada, sent me this link to a cookie company offering a free Harlequin download. I love the idea of pairing indulgences like cookies with category romances.
Peek Freans is launching a brand of cookies with extra calcium and what not by offering a free Harlequin download: BJ Daniels’ Montana Royalty.
But here’s the cool part: on that download page, you can download the book itself in PDF format, OR you can download the “Boss Friendly version” formatted as a Power Point document to read at work.
To quote that same person at M&B UK: that is bloody BRILLIANT. Way to go!

I love free books, especially when they’re DRM-free. :) At least the epub titles are, which I think is awesome.

Wow! Fantastic.
I never dreamed they would put a book on Power Point. That’s pretty smart.
I wonder how much the “free” book would cost to have that much texted to our phones? Or maybe I don’t understand how texting works well enough. Is one long text the same cost as one short one?

omg they have Rhonda Nelson’s The Player! I haven’t been able to find it anywhere as an eBook - strange, because the rest of her books are available. This made my week!

Oh, this is flippin’ awesome. Thanks for sharing. I was just looking at info about THE DEAD TRAVEL FAST by Deanna Raybourn, which is coming out in March. It’s not part of the Silent series, but it’s cool to get one of her books free. And I especially love the choice in format. I downloaded a bunch of pdf’s from Suvudu, but they don’t translate well to the Palm.
Love the “Boss Friendly” idea. Too fun.

Texts from the UK don’t cost anything to receive in the UK, so even if they were texting you the book, you wouldn’t pay anything to get it. I doubt it’s being texted, though as that wouldn’t make sense with the character limits of texting. It probably texts you a URL where you can read it online, since that’s how most mobile promos work.
I’d try it, but I have an iPhone, so ePub is best for me anyway.

I also downloaded “the player” and am currently enjoying it. I would love to see a review of the book here.
