HaBO: YA from Awhile Back

by SB Sarah | by SB Sarah | July 10, 2011 | Sunday at 1:35 am | 7 Comments

Sarah writes in with a book she’s been looking for since she was younger.

I used to read what I think were YA romances on a regular basis as I
traveled around the country as a military brat. When ever we got to a new
place, I would make a bee-line for the library to find a book by a single
author, whom I now can’t recall. The books were very formulaic, which I
found reassuring in a new place - I didn’t know anyone, but I knew how this
book would turn out, darn it!

I think they were generally set in the West, pioneer/rancher days. The one I
recall best concerned a girl who was the daughter of a rancher. The hired
hand was handsome. They connected, quarreled, got back together. It was all
very chaste.

I know this isn’t a lot to go on, but I was hoping The Bitchery might help
me out. I read these books in the 60s, but they may have been written
earlier.

This might be a tough one, but does anyone remember this book?

Sounds like a lot of Grace Livingston Hills I read as a teen. She was a Christian author.

I was going to say maybe the Sunfire series, but they were in the ‘80s:

I have fond memories of the Sunfire romances.

There was a series of YA romances, perhaps from Point?  I can visualize the covers which were always the same but can’t come up with anything more specific.  the memory could range anywhere from 1975 to the early 90s as if I wasn’t reading, I was working in libraries and bookstores and still read YA now that I have trouble remembering being one.

Oh my gosh! I’d totally forgotten about those until now!  I read the one called “Jessica”

Now that I think back on those books - total gateway drug to adult romance books.

Oh my God, I loved those books, and have wondered about them off and on over the years—and are what I immediately thought of when I read the request—but could never remember the name of the series. Thanks!

I was nuts over Richie Tankersley Cusick, I started with “Someone at the Door” and sped through every one of her published (in 2000 or so) books that summer.

Thank you, Bitchery. I knew you’d weigh in with suggestions. I followed links and Googled authors, but nothing turned up anything that looked like what I was looking for. Thanks for your help, though!
