Bitchery reader Aemelia read this book last summer, and wants to read more from this author - only she can’t remember who it is.
In the novel there was a man who came from a family that consisted of 5 or 6 brothers who all had different fathers. Their mother married royalty, a Duke, I believe, but she had several affairs with other men of royal descent as well a boxer. Five (or more?) male children resulted from these affairs, but they were all raised by the Duke who didn’t treat them very well. The Duke gave them his name to avoid public embarrassment, but the ton knew several of the boys were not his biological children.
This particular story is about the youngest son. He only concerned with having a good time and avoids serious work. The book begins with himself and his party friends riding a coach and the friends questioning why he (the main character) has been so glum, and moody. The main character is becoming bored by all the partying and skirt chasing. He is beginning to wonder if there is anything more to life.
The story of the female character begins with her male relative threatening to rape her now that her father is dead, and she has no one to protect her. Anyway, she runs away, and one night she is discovered sleeping on the front porch of the male main character. They find her the same night they are riding the coach, and mistake her for a prostitute or a loose woman who came to entertain them. In her struggle to get away, she punches one of the gentlemen in the jaw, and knees another in the groin, then runs away. The male main character runs after her because he 1-shes’s beautiful and 2-his curiosity is piqued.
The main character finally corners her, and tries to convince her to come back to his place. At first she refuses, but when she sees her relative’s armed guards coming down the road she worries that they will kill the main character when they reach her. Therefore, she kisses the main character and when the armed guards pass by; they mistaken take the couple for lovers and just continue on with their search.
The female main character returns with him to his house and he beds her. She doesn’t know how she can avoid the situation. The next day the male main character realizes that she was a virgin, and tracks her down (she runs away in the morning before he wakes up) and manages to convince her to tell him the whole story. She does, and he swears that he will protect her with his life. (He feels especially guilty because she was a virgin). He does until she is captured and he has to save her. He sends for his brothers so that they can help him rescue her, but the brothers arrive after he saves her by himself.
