HaBO: That is One Hell of a Subplot

Help a Bitch Out!Melanie is looking for this book, and she can only remember one of the subplots. But, boy howdy, what a subplot it is:

There is a book that I have been looking for for what seems like forever! I "borrowed" it from my mother during the early to mid-90s. I remember absolutely nothing about the main plot (which has obviously been a bit of a hindrance when it comes to finding the book!). I loved the subplot though and that's the reason I'm looking for it.

An actress (who I think is the main heroine's nemesis...maybe?) ends up with a cop who, like everyone else, thinks she is cold-blooded. She never seems to show emotions except when acting and even when she's confessing her feelings for him, her eyes seem fixed at a spot over his shoulder. It turns out she has a stutter/stammer and can only speak without it if she projects what she wants to say, like a script, and reads it. It's only when the cop is leaving her that the truth comes out.

I think the cover was blue with silver writing...but that also is no help! Does anyone know what book I'm talking about...or even what the main plot was about? Please! This book has been haunting me for years! Thank you so much.

Does that sound like an amazing subplot or what? Do you recognize this book?

This is a stab in the dark, but it tickled a memory.  But it reminded me of Suzanne Brockmann’s two stand alones.  Either Heart Throb (which is pink covered, but about a movie star) or about Bodyguard (which is blue…)

I’ve read both the Brockmann books and it’s DEFINITELY not Heart Throb. Don’t remember much about Bodyguard, but I don’t think that’s it either.

Sounds kind of like a Diana Palmer or someone of that type with an alphahole hero.

Hmm…Mercenaries Woman by Diana Palmer? That had a distracting sub plot about the heroine’s aunt and a former lover.

I was thinking Diana Palmer too but I thought it was Lawless which has the blue and silver cover.

Holy crap! I think I know one! Could it be Illusions by Katherine Stone?

There’s a book by Raeanne Thayne called the Quiet Storm that has a blue-ish cover with white writing. I doubt this is the HaBO in question, but the heroine has a stammer/disorder and the hero is a cop.

I’ve read BodyGuard and it’s not that one either.

Out of curiosity is this a modern day actress? Or this a historical? It vaguely reminds me of a modern day one with American actress as a side character (not nemesis) who everyone thinks is kinda ‘earthy’ but it turns out was a virgin and really shy. I think that one was a Nora Roberts.
