Diana writes in looking for what sounds like an old skool romance - with two families at odds:
I thought it was Jennifer Blake or Patricia Rice, but it was neither. A historical set in New Orleans. Young lady and her brother come to N.O. I think looking for her father. Mama has died. They discover papa has led a secret life in N.O.,. He has another wife and son. The other wife has a creole brother. He paints. The 2 brothers get into a fight. Not a dual. I think both brothers eventually end up dead. The girl gets kidnapped by the other wife’s brother. He wants to paint her. He of course seduces her. He wants to keep her there to prevent his sister from finding out about the other family and getting hurt. The girl escapes. She tries to walk back to N.O. from the plantation outside of town. Yellow fever has just hit N.O. so people are leaving the city not going into it.
The girl somehow ends up at the other wife’s plantation on the way. She takes her in and discovers that she is really the daughter of her dead husband by another wife. She is nice to her. The wifes brother comes to the plantation and sees the girl there and tries to force her to leave with him. his sister prevents it. I think his name is Raoul or something like that. The girls father married 2 women because he was promised in the Creole tradition and had to marry her. But when he traveled out of town he met the girls mother and fell in love and couldn’t leave her. I know it is politically incorrect now, but I want to reread it. If anyone can remember title or author.
Thanks in advance!
This sounds like a lot of the drama llama in one novel - anyone remember this book?
