HaBO: Klondike Roxie

Librarians seek the wisdom of the Bitchery:

We have a patron searching for an older historical romance, but she can’t remember either the author or the title. She recalls that the main character is a servant named Roxanne who starts on the East Coast (perhaps Boston) and moves to Alaska, where she becomes known as Klondike Roxie.

She later moves to either Seattle or San Francisco. Her love interest is Gavin Coulter (sp?) and he has a brother named Rhoads/Rhodes.

NoveList, BIR (library speak for Books in Print with Reviews), and various search engines haven’t turned up anything.

We know about this blog entry the author of which is just as anxious for the answer as we are.

Anyone remember this book? Hook us up, yo. (Meanwhile, I’m now craving a Klondike bar like holy crap.)

The book is THESE GOLDEN PLEASURES by Valerie Sherwood. Heroine is Roxanne Rossiter, hero is Rhodes (not Gavin) Coulter. Here is back cover blurb:

    ————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————-

They called her THAT BARRINGTON WOMAN

She was beautiful - and notorious.

But beneath the silks and the diamonds, within the supple body so many men had embraced, was the heart of a girl who yearned still for love. At fifteen she had learned her beauty was both a charm and a curse. It had sent her fleeing from Kansas, had been her downfall in Baltimore and Georgia, yet had kept her alive in the Klondike and the South Seas.

Now on this fateful night in 1906, here in San Francisco’s most glittering atmosphere, will she at last be able to reveal her secret longing? Will she be able to call love by name and claim it?

That is truly impressive turnaround time. I wonder what the standing record for HaBO is.

    Bravo, bravo!

How about another HaBO marathon? I’m sure there are a ton waiting in the queue (including mine about your typical identical clueless twin sisters, one wanton one pure, and a memorable scene involving breast milk).

Correct and correct: titles and HaBO marathon coming soon - it’s on my agenda.

I decided to research this book and looked up Ms. Sherwood on the wonderful site fantasticfiction.co.uk. She’s seems quite the character…
