Gimme an E!

I carry this big honking leather bag to and from work because it holds the phone, wallet, train tickets, MetroCard, umbrella - and book or magazine with no trouble zipping up over all that junk. The book/magazine part is key. I have a few bags that will hold a paperback, but the slighty-larger sized books (I can never remember which is trade and which is that other thing) or a magazine or catalog? Fuggedabahadit.

So I have this awesome bag. And I get on the bus with my awesome bag. And I have…no book! I finished my book over the weekend (review pending) and forgot to put ANOTHER BOOK IN THE BAG. I had nothing! Nothing! (Nothing….if I don’t…have…youuuuuuuu!).

I read the internet as long as I had a signal to my phone, but Lord have mercy that dial-up speed gets tiring. So I need your help!

I need something I can read on the bus home - either printed out or on my Palm as a text file. So: gimme your recommendations for an e-book, or a pub story to print and read on paper. I’m not adverse to paying for my pleasure (heh) but please, nothing over $5-$6 since I already have a monthly budget set aside for my Books(not)Free - so I don’t want to spend anything in supreme amounts. Heck, if I wanted to do that, I could go to the Duane Reade and buy something the color of candy hearts with some chick’s cartoon legs on the cover.

So - break my e-book maidenhead and give me some ideas!

Fictionwise is one of the best sites for ebooks and short stories in a variety of genres.  One of the things I like about them is you can get individual short stories, or entire books.

Lora Leigh has a free novel at her site, so some other EC/ebook authors might have freebies, too. I haven’t read it, but hey! It’s free, and it’s a book… :)

If you are in the mood for erotic I can recommend:

The Empress’ New Clothes by Jaid Black (Campy sci-fi)
Natural Law by Joey W. Hill (Mmmmm a really really well done Femme-Dom BDSM)
Tales of the Shareem: Rees by Allyson James (Futuristic)
Fetish by Sherri L. King (Vampire)
A Gentleman Seduced by Sharon Page (Regency)
To Trust a Wolf by Kate Steele (Werewolf)

These are all available from Ellora’s Cave (www.ellorascave.com) and come in .pdf, .html, .prc, .rb or .lit files
(most palms can read .pdf (adobe), .prc (mobipocket) or .lit (microsoft reader).

    Hope this helps!

Well, despite the mess-ups on the HTML tagging, there’s two votes for Natural Law, and I hadn’t read E.D Trix’s vote before I posted mine.  So, there you go!

If you don’t want erotic romance, I liked Broken Wings (fantasy) by Lora Leigh avaiable at Cerridwen Press. And although I haven’t read it, I’ve heard smashing things about The Sweet Gum Tree (women’s fiction) by katherine Allred also available from there.

I also enjoy Lynne Connolly’s Richard and Rose series and think you’d like it Sarah, but that’s of absolutly no help to you now since she pulled it from her epub and hasn’t re-released it yet. But she does have two books, not historical, available at Triskelion that you might consider checking out.

Kelly Armstrong has a number of free downloads on her site which are really excellent, but I bet you might have read them already.

Xeney has a huge page of excellent electronic resources, mostly classics.

And Cory Doctorow, who is awesome, and I guess you’d consider him a speculative fiction author, has a number of his stories and books available for free downloading here.

And if you’ve got an ipod or any other mp3 device, you can download free podcasts, which have saved me before, when I’ve forgotten to bring a book with me.

I like Shelly Laurenston, too. She writes paranormal romance. I’ve also enjoyed books by Sylvia Day and Dee Knight.

Definitely read the excerpts, though, no matter what authors you try. Sometimes a blurb sounds good but reading the excerpt indicates that you might not like it after all.

Want to read an unknown?  I can send you some short stories I’ve written (gritty chic lit) and a Mom lit novel.  Though I know chic lit might not be your thing—but hey, I’m all for free feedback. :-)

Here’s a surprising pleasure: Read the original “Peter Pan,” available at Project Gutenberg: http://www.gutenberg.org/etext/16
Funnier and sexier than Disney ever let on, you have to wonder why Tinkerbell was so jealous of Wendy when Peter was clearly no good to her.

I’ll toss in another vote for _Natural Law_ at Ellora’s Cave.  I thought it was a well done exploration of the Dom/Sub relationship.

I second Alyssa’s Shelly Laurenston.  Alpha female AND alpha male.  And werewolves.  Pack Challenge is the first one.  http://www.triskelionpublishing.com

Oh…Doc Savage ebooks from Black Mask.  I need to convert someone!  And they’re free.  Man of Bronze is the first one.

I have the Allyson James one, but haven’t read it yet.  She’s also Ashley Gardner/Jennifer Ashley.

  15. Darlene Marshall said on 07.26.05 at 03:57 AM • [comment link]

Oooh, Doc Savage!  Renny, Monk and the whole gang!  If I was ever thinking about writing Mary Sue fanfic, it would be about the Man of Bronze. He could trill in my ear anytime.  *sigh*

  16. Nicole said on 07.26.05 at 04:02 AM • [comment link]

I’ve been reading them on my pda.  Oh yeah…Doc needs a woman. You know, I kinda wonder if he’s even been de-virginized.  Hmmm….do they ever mention that in the books?  Not so far.  But ah…I love reading them.  Such a fun guilty pleasure.  And luckily they’re in ebook form since the paperbacks can be pretty pricey sometimes.

Another vote for Fictionwise.com as probably the best source of quality e-books out there, as of this moment.

  18. Darlene Marshall said on 07.26.05 at 03:02 PM • [comment link]

Nicole—Doc’s cousin Patricia certainly would make for the most interesting mix of genetic material, but it wouldn’t be a good match.

It’s out of print now, but there’s a book by Philip Jose Farmer called _Doc Savage—His Apocalyptic Life_, which is a great overview of the entire series, and Farmer has his tongue in his cheek as he rationalizes much of the action and plot lines.  There’s also an elaborate family tree “explaining” Doc’s familial relationships to Tarzan, Sherlock Holmes, Same Spade, Fu Manchu, James Bond and Travis McGee.

  19. Nicole said on 07.26.05 at 03:25 PM • [comment link]

Yeah, I’ve come across that book by Farmer, but didn’t read much of it.  I think it was from the library wherever I was living at the time.

ereader.com offers a lot of mainstream published books in e-book format.

  22. Liddy said on 07.30.05 at 03:14 PM • [comment link]

Interesting dilemma you have! As for Fictionwise, I don’t recommend buying any of Ellora’s Cave titles there; you’ll pay through the nose. Hey, not literally, but I consider twice the price of the same title on the EC site akin to highway robbery.

As for freebies in electonic formats, Baen has a wonderful selection of its print titles available for free download at

    http://www.webscription.net/free/

I highly recommend Eric Flint’s 1632. You’ll find a wide selection, well worth browsing (I open a second browser windows on Amazon or B&N to read the blurbs) and you can download in a variety of formats, including RTF.

Enjoy! And please do let us all know what you chose to read.

    Hugs,
    Liddy

    Sarah,

I’m a tad late responding to this—have a bunch of books on deadline to go to the printer. However, I’ll recommend the following from Zumaya:

    24/7 by Susan DiPlacido

It’s available at eBookAd and Fictionwise, and I think you’ll like it.

    Also, for future reference:

Harvey & Eck by Erin O’Brien (out in August)
Tough Enough by Sarah Storme (out in September)

    Liz
