This song never fails to make me feel happy and just a little bittersweet too…I want to hug my kids, drive in a car with the windows down and the wind in my hair, and hold hands with my husband.

This is the song my sister chose for the father/daughter dance at her wedding. My dad is Pacific Islander, so it had extra special meaning for us all.

Iz was such an amazing talent, and I am completely unable to listen to this song without getting choked up.

This is the unofficial Hawaii State Song. The radio stations, TV ads, and everything in between play this song constantly.

Iz’s songs advocate for Hawaiian independence, which is a hot topic as the Senate considers the Akaka Bill to give federal recognition to the Native Hawaiians. The issue is not a straight forward as it seems. But Iz’s name is an example of changing Hawaiian culture. From wikipedia,

“In 1860 Kamehameha IV signed the Act to Regulate Names. Hawaiians were to take their father’s given name as a surname, and all children born henceforth were to receive a Christian, i.e. English, given name. Hawaiian names were transferred into middle names. The law was not repealed until 1967.”

If Iz’s music calls to you, then come on over to the Hawaiian Islands. It is a fascinating place of natural wonder and Polynesian culture.

Well, add me to the list of viewers who got choked up. I grew up in Hawaii (I know, tough life, but somebody had to do it) and this made me so homesick. Iz is missed.

This is the perfect song for Hawai’i. I have so many pics of morning rainbows as seen from the lanai. Watching this video made the matzah much more palatable

Did this recording come before or after Eva Cassidy did the same version of the song? Hers was first heard in about 1992, I think, but only became well-known in the UK in about 2000.

I found the video here too painful to watch. So sad that both singers are now gone, far too early.
