We have this on VHS for when my children were vaguely interested in using the potty. And I couldn’t watch it after a couple of times due to the creepy factor, but mainly because I couldn’t buy that Elmo’s father had a mustache. 70’s porn anyone???

This DVD actually did help my daughter get interested in the potty, so I can forgive the creep factor for that alone. But she did request it so much that, after I decided that it had done all the good it was going to do, the disc had to go to the great DVD player in the sky.
didnt23: I didn’t watch that show 23 times. It ended up being a lot more than that. *headdesk*

I just can’t escape Elmo’s Potty Time, can I? Did the Beadboys put you up to this?

That video was so wierd, I couldn’t even finish it.
At Cara: I Never, and I mean Never, want to see my poop *wink* at me. lol.

I find Elmo very disturbing. this is a representation of why.

I know, Molly, it’s mad creepy. There’s got to be some hygiene issues at stake when you make number-twos that cuddly and approachable.

We have this on DVD. Brianna used to love it. I think I’m immune to any creep factor when it comes to talking puppets at this point. Unless someone starts talking about plushy love. Then I’m creeped out.
You know, for some reason I never thought that was Elmo’s father, but was his grandfather. I wonder why I thought that?

I have 3 dogs and a 20 year old cat who has decided that cat potty training rules no longer apply to her (and luckily, a strong baby gate between the dogs and said cat’s lair). We don’t need no creepy videos! Every day is a potty training adventure ‘round here.
But really, the talking toilet? That just brings back bad overnight camp memories of the toilet monster who lived in the lake, and only ate campers who had to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night.

we used to make my cousin watch the potty training tapes when she was little because she didn’t want to be potty trained. This one always creeped me out…not quite sure why though.
Cara McKenna / Meg Maguire said on 10.30.09 at 06:57 PM • [link]
Oh, plenty of reasons, Liz. I’ll start with the sproing sound effects at the beginning and the tiny man in the beret and suspenders, watching the proceedings from the edge of the tub. Thumbs up, indeed!

@ Kathy - yes, YES! on the 70’s porn. “Dad Elmo” looks less like a dad and more like the creepy visiting uncle. Please don’t entrust potty training your child to creepy visiting uncle.

thank you ,Cara! so glad i am not the only one creeped out by that! nobody else saw how weird that video was…and this wasn’t even the whole thing.

found the whole video of the clip i added earlier…it is even creepier than i remember it being.

Am I weird because this doesn’t creep me out at all? The only thing I didn’t like was the rather constant throaty chuckle coming from Elmo as dad sang. I especially liked, “Now where did your mother put that air freshener?” :-D

@Wendy - it was weird like all Elmo videos but there was nothing in it that creeped me out, too. I spent most of the video thinking how hard it must be to come up with 3 verses making using a potty sound like fun. (Maybe the creep factor came from pun of Potty Time=Party Time??)
Spam word - average49 - oh boy, I have 13 years to work up to average.

I hate Elmo. I like Old Skool Sesame Street, before he dominated the show.

Liz, my son loved the Potty Time video. It didn’t help with potty training but he loved the music. I couldn’t get “She’s a Super Duper Pooper” out of my head for almost a year. I haven’t seen it in almost 20 years and now it’s back in my head.

That clip wasn’t the least bit creepy to me. The Man bought that video for our daughter, but she wasn’t interested, despite the fact that she is generally pro-Elmo.

Hee! I liked that it was Anime Tiger Dad’s job to handle the poopy cleanup on that Japanese clip. The end of it though, with the real kid? Made me cringe a little bit.

Sycorax, my mother hates Elmo as well. As a retired teacher, she is convinced that he is responsible for today’s kids being so loud and shrieky. I’m not fond of him either, but it’s mostly because he seems to have replaced Grover.

That was so creepy I think I just went into early menopause. I’m so glad I don’t have kids so I don’t have to be subjected to that.
