What great singers and kudos to their teacher for encouraging them this way.

Lol from Eye of the Tiger to Coldplay. I want that dynamite guy for my chorus teacher! Thanks for the link~

Spamword: may56 May 56 classic hits be reborn and sung by elementary-school kids!

My eyes got seriously misty watching these videos—this is exactly how to keep kids motivated, keep them in school, reach out to them, and let them know that they can create beauty in the world.  Wonderful.

The kids do that song better than Coldplay does.

wow! i wish that my choir could have done something that cool when i was a kid…the coolest song we sang was Somewhere Out There from An American Tale.

The PS 22 school choir ROCKS. I don’t think I’ve ever heard kids that age sing better. They nailed it.

Aw that was FAB!!! I wish our jr. high did more contemporary stuff like that

Hey, one of you great authors out there!  That teacher would make a fantastic romance hero.  I’m madly in lurve!

    Altruistic.  Loves kids.  Musical.  SIGH!

hat teacher would make a fantastic romance hero.  I’m madly in lurve!

    Altruistic.  Loves kids.  Musical.  SIGH!

    I second that motion!

Those kids were just awesome!  I loved the emoting while they sang—one of those girls kept pointing to herself when they sang the line, “That was when I ruled the world”.  I loved that!

radio88—this thing is definitely sentient, isn’t it?

I got tickled by the Nightline anchor/announcer introducing the report. He said the kids were singing “in unison,” thereby showing his own musical ignorance. They were not singing “in unison.” These 5th graders from a not-very-well-off school/neighborhood were singing IN HARMONY!!!!!!!

How many 5th graders can do that? Yea, Mr. B! (See http://www.ps22chorus.blogspot.com for more stories, videos, kudos, etc.)

    I am in awe.

These made me cry.  What a wonderful wonderful thing.

Wow. What a great group of singers, and what an awesome teacher.

  13. FantasyBookLuvr said on 06.13.09 at 04:29 PM[link]

That was SO awesome!  I was really impressed with how enthusiastic and happy they were, just to be singing.  It was very touching.

Their parents should be very proud.  And the teacher gets 5 gold stars for keeping his class inspired.

Wow….great little singers. Why couldn’t my chorus singer have been that cool? Only occasionally were we allowed to even sing current Broadway hits, and once we sang “Walkin’ On Sunshine”, but that was it for contemporary songs. Everything else was “traditional”. I got bored and quit as soon as I was in HS (when chorus became optional).

No one has yet mentioned the hotness of the teacher. Just thought I’d throw that out there.

Ponytail. Serious guitar playing chops. Obvious passion for music and kids. (Epic win.)

Oh, with apologies to JoanneF who did imply something of the sort.

  17. KimberlyD said on 06.15.09 at 12:15 AM[link]

That was AWESOME! And I agree with Jenny-this is exactly how to inspire (obviously) underprivileged kids!

  18. Becky said on 06.16.09 at 03:18 AM[link]

ABC News did a piece about these kids this evening.  The really sad thing?  This is a 5th grade class, and they’re all “graduating” to junior high next year.  Where there are no choir classes because of budget cuts.

OMFG.  *sigh*  Sometimes I’m just sure that we really are going to change the world.  So glad I ran across this.  I missed it when it originally posted.
