I’ve been jonesing for a new book all week and ended up buying Heather Snow’s Sweet Enemy when it showed up in my Goodreads newsletter today. The first thing I did is come here to search for Heather Snow’s name…
This year at RWA Nationals I did something a little different. I scheduled lunches and meetings with only one or two people, because one thing I find exhausting about RWA is that I have 1/10th of a conversation with about 300 people for five days, and at the end my brain hurts and I can’t remember anything.
So while I didn’t run around and do the interview equivalent of high-fiving 500+ people, I did have some fascinating conversations with people, and had one of the best RWA experiences since I started attending RWA three years ago.
First: overview. RWA is huge, loud, convivial, educational, exhausting, and a pageant of fabulous shoes. Both Teresa Medeiros and I think that Christina Dodd’s 13 pair of shoes sets an RWA record.
The hotel was, in my opinion, rather awesome. There was a very VERY small bar area, but it opened up to a lobby with a circle of small sofa-and-chair gathering areas so there wasn’t any time where the chairs and sofas weren’t full of people talking and drinking. The staff, because of the Disney customer service training, was outstanding—I have friends who were in hotel & restaurant management and…

We’ll be meeting Saturday, 31 July, at 3:30 pm at Il Mulino, the bar to the left as you walk into the Swan hotel (Across from the Dolphin).
I know I said 3pm originally but the Il Mulino doesn’t open until 330. I will be there a bit before hand so I can make sure to snag some sofas or chairs, and we can get our drink on. Woo hoo!
I have prizes to give away, there’s a bar (in case you missed that part), and Sherry Thomas is going to stop by - as will the author of our next book club selection, to be announced at the event.
I hope you can make it. Bonus: they have really REALLY good cheese straws. WIN!
Last night I wandered the 2010 Literacy Signing making a music video. With Ke$ha. Not actually with me but playing on endless loop in my head. It is only fair I share the ear worm with you, right?
Thank you to all the authors who let me film them (I’m sorry I could not use all my footage, as some of it was really wonky when I imported it) and who wrote all the lovely books I buy by the truckload every year. And congrats to everyone for raising over $62,000.00 in one night to fight illiteracy. That RULES.
(My apologies for the not-perfect editing. Lip-synching is HARD.)
All over the place, many of us are making final preparations to head over to RWA’s national convention in Orlando. Given my to-do list today, I figured it was about time we started drinking ourselves into a stupor with common tasks that prepare you for RWA National. And if you’ve never been, have a look at the fun - I hope you can join in next year.

Tomorrow, if ye be in Brooklyn or parts nearby, avast, for I will be part of a splendiferous panel on romance at one of the best independent bookstores in North America, WORD Brooklyn.
Along with New York Times bestselling authors Sara McLean, Lauren Willig, Hope Tarr and I will be doing one of those fun panel discussions all about romance, why it’s awesome, and what all you might like to read. I hear rumors of a booksigning afterward.
The event was in the New York Times last weekend, which gave me a major OMGWHUT? moment, so I hope that if you’re there, you’ll introduce yourself. PLUS WORDBrooklyn will be unveiling their new romance section, so I will definitely have a party in that aisle. I might even rip a bodice.
There are details and directions at the WORD website, and I’ll be driving in from Jersey. How many hours do you think I need to go all 22 miles to Brooklyn? I’m budgeting 2.5 hours travel time. No, that’s not a typo.
PLUS, in RWA news, if you haven’t seen the Tweet mania, I’m on the RWA schedule this year with a…
