New Advertising Opportunity at SBTB

by SB Sarah | December 08, 2007 | Saturday at 10:02 pm | 8 Comments

Here at Smart Bitch HQ, we’re expensive bitches. We mail out prize packages all over the world, we host our website and buy our domain name, and we spend money on things like drugs, hookers, and Hasselhoff. And in order to keep our pimp hands strong, and our Hassel-habit going, we offer advertising. We honestly didn’t think it would be that big of a deal, but hello, large stick of Clueless, please, beat me on the head.

As of right now, the large ad space on our sidebar is sold out for 2008. The whole damn year and we aren’t even there yet. Plus we’re taking reservations for the smaller rotating ad space, and have some folks booked through late ‘08 as well.

So! What to do for folks who clamor for the opportunity to pimp their wild selves on the hot pink wonderment that is Smart Bitches? Candy and I put our heads together (virtually - putting us in the same state can cause tectonic shifts or bad attitudes or something equally bizarre) and came up with a solution:

Starting Jan 1 2008, we’re going to offer a second larger adspace for your pimpin’ pleasure. The ad… read more »

Posthumous Bad Sex!

by SB Sarah | November 28, 2007 | Wednesday at 5:50 am | 46 Comments

Norman Mailer has won the Bad Sex Award! What a marvelous honor for some truly amazing writing:

So Klara turned head to foot, and put her most unmentionable part down on his hard-breathing nose and mouth, and took his old battering ram into her lips. Uncle was now as soft as a coil of excrement. She sucked on him nonetheless with an avidity that could come only from the Evil One - that she knew. From there, the impulse had come. So now they both had their heads at the wrong end, and the Evil One was there. He had never been so close before.

The Hound began to come to life. Right in her mouth. It surprised her. Alois had been so limp. But now he was a man again! His mouth lathered with her sap, he turned around and embraced her face with all the passion of his own lips and face, ready at last to grind into her with the Hound, drive it into her piety.

Wow. “Her piety.” That’s a new one. I hope I don’t see that again.

Triskelion Rumors Ahoy

by SB Sarah | November 16, 2007 | Friday at 1:04 am | 3 Comments

Tawny Taylor is reporting on her blog that Siren Publishing has won the bid for the rights to Triskelion’s contracts, but no official word has been posted on Siren’s website. As per her entry, which cites an unnamed author loop, “All the contractual rights that were included in the bid are now returned to the former Triskelion authors, unencumbered.”

Anyone out there got confirmation or details?

Erotica is In The Library?!

by SB Sarah | November 08, 2007 | Thursday at 7:02 pm | 54 Comments

Erotica author Anne Douglas sent me a link to a story that she discussed on her blog: a Jacksonville, FL, mom is up in arms because her 16 year old daughter brought home an erotica novel from the library.

Says the mother:

“This is just the kind of stuff we’re trying to protect our kids from in society today,” says Maddox. “And here she’s able to just grab it off the shelf at the library with no one there to keep it away from them.”

According to Douglas’ blog entry on the story, the book in question was by Zane. Further, this is Douglas’ local library:

On a personal note, this is not the only erotic romance on the shelf at Pablo Creek - I was pleasantly surprised to pick up Diane Whiteside’s Irish Devil (I think I saw one of the follow up stories too). Pablo Creek also has a separate children’s section—as in not even in the same main room, and also a separate wall of teen books in the fiction, along with a separate teen computer/meet&greet teen shelving room that is in a glassed off section from the main library. Teens and children are well catered… read more »

Breaking News: Sarah Faints Over Grudge Match

by SB Sarah | November 07, 2007 | Wednesday at 7:24 pm | 35 Comments

Not only did four people forward me The News Story Of The Day To End All News Stories Ever, but a friend of mine texted me to tell me about George Clooney and Fabio getting into a shoving match at a NY restaurant.

According to the variety of sources carrying the story, Fabio and some lady friends were having dinner, when Clooney asked them to stop taking pictures - sources theorize that Clooney thought they were taking pictures of him.

Fabio got up and went over to George’s table — not to apologize, but to explain that the photos weren’t of George. “I thought you were a nice guy,” Fabio, 48, said to George, 46. “Stop being a diva.” Those were apparently fighting words, because George stood up and the two started arguing until George went to push Fabio.

“Stop Being a Diva!” might be the new battle cry of the Smart Bitches, certainly. At least, this one.

As Lizzie said in her email, “Who is famous-er? Whose manager talks more smack? Who assumes anyone with a camera out is pointing it at him? Who you calling a diva? Who will YOU root for in Fabio v.… read more »

Suzanne Brockmann Rocks my Socks

by SB Sarah | November 03, 2007 | Saturday at 7:34 pm | 28 Comments

Thanks to Bitchery reader Lisa, who sent me a link to her site where she reposted an announcement that all proceeds in perpetuity for the sale of All Through The Night, her new Troubleshooters book, will be donated to MassEquality, which is fighting to preserve equal marriage rights in Massachusetts. According to MassEquality, her gift has already surpassed $250,000.

Says Brockmann,

I fervently hope by the time you read this that my son’s right to marry will have been preserved.

But if not, then I have this to say to the people who are rapidly becoming a minority themselves, people who don’t think that gay Americans should have the same rights as the rest of us—

What part of love don’t you understand?

To everyone else, to all the friends of Jules—past, present and future—thank you for believing, and for helping to change the world.

Word up to Suzanne Brockmann.

Updated to add:

I just found out that Ms. Brockmann is signing books in NJ today, but I’d never get to the store in time. But! Harvey, the nice owner of The Clinton Book Shop is going to grab five copies for me and ask Awesome Brockmann to… read more »

Purity Balls. No, Not That Kind of Balls

by SB Sarah | November 01, 2007 | Thursday at 6:48 pm | 96 Comments

From the “OMG I’m squicked out from just reading the first paragraph” department, we have a link sent by Bitchery reader Kimberly Anne, who is as squicked as I am: Purity Balls.

No, not that kind of ball. You put on a dress, pledge to remain a virgin, and dance with your dad.

I’m not kidding:

the main agenda is for fathers to vow to protect the girls’ chastity until they marry and for the daughters to promise to stay pure. Pastor Randy Wilson, host of the event and cofounder of the ball, strides to the front of the room, takes the microphone and asks the men, “Are you ready to war for your daughters’ purity?”

Make war! Not love! And ignore the degrading interpretation of “purity” and somewhat repulsive subtext of controlling your daughter’s virginity!

Writing + Tan = Win!

by SB Sarah | October 31, 2007 | Wednesday at 1:00 am | 13 Comments

There are, if you hadn’t noticed, a LOT of RWA chapters. They’re everywhere. And they often host conferences, and those conferences frequently take advantage of local amenities to entice folks to come on down and learn about romance writing, the industry, you know, all that fun stuff. So - New York City? Allure of the big city and you know, that publishing industry thing everyone talks about. New Jersey? Hey. There’s PLENTY of ALLURE in JERSEY! (I kid - the Jersey conference is awesome.)

But by far the most creative chapter conference I’ve encountered? Florida Romance Writers’ Fun in the Sun Conference . Hey, if you’re based in Florida, why not? Three day cruise to the Bahamas? Agents, editors, writing sessions and a bar that’s open late at night? And not to mention the part where it’s warm? And in the sun? As a potential business expense?

Word. That’s a brilliant idea for a conference.

Tiki Barber at the Quill: “Romance Rocks.”

by SB Sarah | October 23, 2007 | Tuesday at 4:12 pm | 40 Comments

Here at Smart Bitches, we are all about Tiki Barber. What’s Tiki doing now that he’s retired? What kind of car does he drive? What major literary awards does he present, and what color tie does he wear?

I haven’t found a great picture besides this one, but check it out: behind some author named Nora Roberts whose book Angels Fall won the Quill Award for Book of the Motherfriggin’ Year , there’s Tiki Barber. Looks like his tie is burgundy, no?

Loose ID Bids on Contractual Assets of Triskelion

by SB Sarah | October 15, 2007 | Monday at 2:48 am | 15 Comments

From a number of different sites comes this news:Loose ID has bid on the contracts held by bankrupt Triskelion:

If successful in their bid, Loose Id, LLC will release the majority of contracts at no cost to the authors who entered into them.

In a few cases, new contracts will be extended to the author from LooseId in lieu of the Triskelion contracts. If an author chooses to reject the offer made them, their contract will be released by Loose Id, at no cost to the author.

So, if successful,  LooseID gets dibs on the contracted works originally negotiated with Triskelion, and can either offer a new contract or release the author to allow them to shop that work elsewhere - if I’m reading that correctly. This does not seem like an altogether bad thing for authors whose unpublished manuscripts were held as part of Triskelion’s assets.

Hooray for Smart Bitches in All Genres

by SB Sarah | October 11, 2007 | Thursday at 6:57 pm | 14 Comments

Doris Lessing has won the Nobel prize for Literature. An 88 year-old self-educated writer, she is the author of an absolute monster load of books, exploring themes ranging from Communism, socialism, feminism, and Sufism. Ultimately she explored science fiction - the basis of a good bit of criticism from Harold Bloom as to her selection as this year’s Nobel Laureate. (Imagine the top of his head blowing off if a romance author won! HA!)

Lessing defended her choice of genres by saying, “What they didn’t realize was that in science fiction is some of the best social fiction of our time.”

Though I’m not a reader of much science fiction, I have to say, “Damn skippy, ma’am.” Congratulations!
