Brevitas
by Candy | October 26, 2006 | Thursday at 12:43 am | 20 CommentsWired magazine asks several authors to write six-word stories, including people like Margaret Atwood, Orson Scott Card, Gregory Maguire, Neil Gaiman, David Brin, Joss Whedon, Kevin Smith, Michael Moorcock and Vernor Vinge. You can read the wonderful results here.
My favorites:
“Gown removed carelessly. Head, less so.” - Joss Whedon
“From torched skyscrapers, men grew wings.” - Gregory Maguire
“It cost too much, staying human.” - Bruce Sterling
“It’s behind you! Hurry before it” - Stephen Baxter
“The baby’s blood type? Human, mostly.” - Orson Scott Card
“Epitaph: He shouldn’t have fed it.” - Brian Herbert
“whorl. Help! I’m caught in a time” - Darren Aronofsky and Ari Handel
“Temporal recursion. I’m dad and mom?” - David Brin
“Starlet sex scandal. Giant squid involved.” - Margaret Atwood
“Leia: ‘Baby’s yours.’ Luke: ‘Bad news…’” - Steve Meretzky

Oh, that was a good one, too. My favorites list by no means indicates I didn’t thoroughly enjoy the other submissions. I also liked Atwood’s other submission (“Longed for him. Got him. Shit.”) but I enjoyed the lasciviousness with giant squid so much more.
...that last bit there sounds really, really wrong if taken out of context. I guess I’ll never be able to run for public office now.

“I guess I’ll never be able to run for public office now.”
Oh not so true! I’m convinced that the public would gladly vote for anyone who didn’t run a negative ad campaign and simply said. I’m gonna tell you the truth. You might not like the truth, but I’ll tell you like it is. But at least you’ll know the truth, and we can work together to make things better.
I think the novelty of it would just blow people away. As long as you blasted the airwaves with the message. I’m certain it would work. Reverse psychology you see. ROFL
Atwood’s sub - Most excellent dudette! Most Excellent!

We’ll see if Kinky Friedman wins…
(Early voting is going on right now in Texas! Vote Kinky!)
And to go back to the topic at hand, I loved Margaret Atwood’s the best.

Someone’s been watching a lottle too much hentai involving tentacle sex.
“Lascivious squid fathers starlet’s secret baby.” ... sounds more like an Enquirer headline.

Longed for him. Got him. Shit.
- Margaret Atwood
I love this one as one can only love such an anti-romantic truth. I’d title this story “Epilogue After the Happily Ever After”
Gown removed carelessly. Head, less so.
- Joss Whedon
I wish this one didn’t totally remind me of Buffy, but even so, it’s so elegant in its minimal way that I still think it’s independently beautiful.
