Books on Sale: The Kate Daniels Series 1-6 by Ilona Andrews

Another Kindle Daily Deal today on the first six books of a series? Yup! The Kate Daniels series by Ilona Andrews is marked down at Amazon to $1.99 today only. If you're fond of urban fantasy/paranormal shifters, extremely ass-kicking heroines (by which I mean they kick extreme amounts of ass), and a slow-building romance, you will really like this series. I haven't noticed any price-matching, but fingers are crossed.

ETA: They are being price matched at BN and Kobo, AND Kobo:Canada! AW HELL YEAH.

Book Magic Bites

RECOMMENDED: Magic Bites by Ilona Andrews is $1.99. This is book 1 in the Kate Daniels series, and I remember reading it and hiding so no one would make me stop reading. Be ye warned: crack ahoy. This book has a 4-star average at GoodReads, with nearly 41,000 reviews, so clearly I'm not alone in my opinion.

When the magic is up, rogue mages cast their spells and monsters appear, while guns refuse to fire and cars fail to start. But then technology returns, and the magic recedes as unpredictably as it arose, leaving all kinds of paranormal problems in its wake.

Kate Daniels is a down-on-her-luck mercenary who makes her living cleaning up these magical problems. But when Kate's guardian is murdered, her quest for justice draws her into a power struggle between two strong factions within Atlanta's magic circles.

The Masters of the Dead, necromancers who can control vampires, and the Pack, a paramilitary clan of shapechangers, blame each other for a series of bizarre killings—and the death of Kate's guardian may be part of the same mystery. Pressured by both sides to find the killer, Kate realizes she's way out of her league—but she wouldn't have it any other way…

Book Magic Burns

RECOMMENDED: Magic Burns by Ilona Andrews is $1.99. This is book 2, and it has a 4.33-star average on GoodReads with 29,000+ reviews. The readers on GR mention most frequently that they love how fierce and determined Kate is, but that even though she's scary, often overwhelmed and screws up at times, she never stops being incredibly real, and very, very funny. (I agree with that, too.)

Down in Atlanta, tempers – and temperatures – are about to flare…

As a mercenary who cleans up after magic gone wrong, Kate Daniels has seen her share of occupational hazards. Normally, waves of paranormal energy ebb and flow across Atlanta like a tide. But once every seven years, a flare comes, a time when magic runs rampant. Now Kate’s going to have to deal with problems on a much bigger scale: a divine one.

When Kate sets out to retrieve a set of stolen maps for the Pack, Atlanta’s paramilitary clan of shapeshifters, she quickly realizes much more at stake. During a flare, gods and goddesses can manifest – and battle for power. The stolen maps are only the opening gambit in an epic tug-of-war between two gods hoping for rebirth. And if Kate can’t stop the cataclysmic showdown, the city may not survive…

Book Magic Strikes

RECOMMENDED: Magic Strikes by Ilona Andrews is $1.99. This is book 3, and does it have a 4+ star average? Yes, yes it does. 4.45, in fact.

I remember reading and loving this series, but it was long enough ago that I remember three main things and little else. I really liked Kate, I really, really liked the slow burn building of Kate's relationship, and I didn't mind that each book featured a specific problem to be solved that also furthered the larger plot questions of the series as a whole. So, I recommend them, but have to refresh my memory as to which book is which.

I remember this one, though, for the fan scene. 🙂

When magic strikes and Atlanta goes to pieces, it’s a job for Kate Daniels…

Drafted into working for the Order of Merciful Aid, mercenary Kate Daniels has more paranormal problems than she knows what to do with these days. And in Atlanta, where magic comes and goes like the tide, that’s saying a lot.

But when Kate's werewolf friend Derek is discovered nearly dead, she must confront her greatest challenge yet. As her investigation leads her to the Midnight Games—an invitation only, no holds barred, ultimate preternatural fighting tournament—she and Curran, the Lord of the Beasts, uncover a dark plot that may forever alter the face of Atlanta's shapeshifting community…

Book Magic Bleeds

RECOMMENDED: Magic Bleeds by Ilona Andrews is $1.99. Four star average? Yup – 4.5!  Increasing tension? Yup yup. Higher stakes than previous books? Also yup. Have you read this series? Do you agree with all the 4+ stars?

Atlanta would be a nice place to live, if it weren't for the magic. When the magic is up, rogue mages cast their spells and monsters appear, while guns refuse to fire and cars fail to start. But then technology returns, and the magic recedes as unpredictably as it arose.

Kate Daniels works for the Order of Knights of Merciful Aid, officially as a liaison with the mercenary guild. Unofficially, she cleans up the paranormal problems no one else wants to handle – especially if they involve Atlanta's shapeshifting community. When she's called in to investigate a fight at the Steel Horse, a bar on the border between the territories of the shapeshifters and the necromancers, Kate quickly discovers that there's a new player in town.

One who's been around for thousands of years – and who rode to war at the side of Kate's father.

This foe may be too much even for Kate and Curran, the Beast Lord, to handle. Because this time Kate will be taking on family.

Book Magic Slays

RECOMMENDED: Magic Slays by Ilona Andrews is $1.99. This is Kate book 5, and it has a 4.45-star average. Reviews on GR specifically mention the relationships Kate has with other women, and how wonderfully written they are. My problem is, I read this series one after the other and can't easily distinguish between each book except to look at the series and go, Oh, I really liked that series. (And readers are totally right about Kate's friendships with other women.)

Plagued by a war between magic and technology, Atlanta has never been so deadly. Good thing Kate Daniels is on the job.

Kate Daniels may have quit the Order of Merciful Aid, but she’s still knee-deep in paranormal problems. Or she would be if she could get someone to hire her. Starting her own business has been more challenging than she thought it would be—now that the Order is disparaging her good name, and many potential clients are afraid of getting on the bad side of the Beast Lord, who just happens to be Kate’s mate.

So when Atlanta’s premier Master of the Dead calls to ask for help with a vampire on the loose, Kate leaps at the chance of some paying work. Turns out this is not an isolated incident, and Kate needs to get to the bottom of it—fast, or the city and everyone dear to her might pay the ultimate price . . .

Book Magic Rises

Magic Rises by Ilona Andrews is $1.99. Kate 6! 4.54-star average! Kicking ass, taking names, witty banter.

If you by chance have a rather long plane ride coming up, perhaps to southern Texas, perhaps one of all of these might make the time go by faster? I think so, anyway.

The series continues after this book with Magic Breaks, which comes out July 29. The price on that book is a little painful ($10.99 digital, because Breaks is a hardcover) but you can get 1-6 today for about $12. That is not bad.

Atlanta is a city plagued by magical problems. Kate Daniels will fight to solve them—no matter the cost.

Mercenary Kate Daniels and her mate, Curran, the Beast Lord, are struggling to solve a heartbreaking crisis. Unable to control their beasts, many of the Pack’s shapeshifting children fail to survive to adulthood. While there is a medicine that can help, the secret to its making is closely guarded by the European packs, and there’s little available in Atlanta.

Kate can’t bear to watch innocents suffer, but the solution she and Curran have found threatens to be even more painful. The European shapeshifters who once outmaneuvered the Beast Lord have asked him to arbitrate a dispute—and they’ll pay him in medicine. With the young people’s survival and the Pack’s future at stake, Kate and Curran know they must accept the offer—but they have little doubt that they’re heading straight into a trap…

Please stop crying. Please, sweetie? I swear it’s just a few little clicks. I’ll go really slow. And then we don’t have to do it again if you really don’t want to. There, that wasn’t so bad. I’m sure it’ll hurt less the next time. And I won’t ask again until Wednesday. I’m sure you’ll feel better after payday.

My debit card has taken it to the hilt.

  2. Tam says:

I already bought these in paperback, and passed them on to my sister in England (because they come out here earlier). Sooooo, now I have them all on my Kindle, for maximum binge-reading pleasure.

I don’t usually like the furniture-breaking alpha hero sort. I’m especially over the whole shapeshifter hero thing. I make an exception for Curran.

  3. Darlynne says:

BN appears to be matching the prices. Unbelievable!

  4. Darlynne says:

    And Kobo.

  5. Joy says:

Ouch!  My wallet is screaming but my reading self is doing the happy dance.  I have these in paperback but now can clear some space on my shelves. Must resist urge to fill empty shelves.

  6. Frauke says:

    @Donna Marie: Can’t stop laughing. 🙂

  7. Judy865 says:

Love the Kate Daniels books, already own them all digitally but at these prices thinking about gifting a set to my sister.  Yes, totally agree with the 4+ stars.  Waiting for the latest one to come out at end of the month—one of the very few series I will shell out full price for on opening day!

  8. SB Sarah says:

    YES. PRICE MATCHING!

I’ve updated with additional links. YAY! Thanks!

  9. Amy says:

Thank you so much for the heads up! I now have the complete set!

  10. LisaJo885 says:

Magic Bites is still $12.99 at BN (or is now), but the others are $1.99. I’ll pick those up and see if I can borrow Magic Bites from the library.

  11. LisaJo885 says:

Ack, Magic Bleeds is $5.99 on BN. The other 4 are $1.99. *sigh* I just gave in and bought them all.

  12. LisaJo885 says:

Again with the *sigh*. Magic Bites is still $1.99 but it doesn’t come up on the usual search, you have to click on the $12.99 link and then check the nook “versions” available to see the $1.99. Or maybe that’s just me because Magic Bites is already in my library. It’s time to go to bed now. Thanks for the sale!

  13. Stephanie says:

I love these books!  And I can’t wait for next Tuesday.  Does anyone have some recommendations for what to read afterwards, though?  I’ve ready everything by Ilona Andrews I could get my hands on and I would loooooooove another similar series to sink my teeth into.  I’ve read the Night Huntress books by Jeanine Frost (really enjoyed at the beginning, not quite as engaging at the moment) and a bunch the Kitty and the Midnight Hour books, thought they didn’t grab me as hard.
