Books on Sale: Paranormal Detectives, Fairies, & Vamps - Oh My!

Book Under Wraps

Under Wraps by Hannah Jayne is $1.99! In this urban fantasy, our heroine works for the Underworld Detection Agency and it features a large cast of supernatural characters – vampires, angels, trolls, werewolves, and the list keeps going! This is the first book in a series and readers found it to suffer from first book-itis, where a lot of the writing is spent building the world. And, though they thought the cover to be misleading in its badassery, many enjoyed the more light-hearted take on the urban fantasy genre.

Sick of wrongful-death lawsuits every time a full moon comes around?

Call the Underworld Detection Agency.

As a human immune to magic, Sophie Lawson can help everyone from banshee to zombie transition into normal, everyday San Francisco life. With a handsome werewolf as her UDA boss and a fashionista vampire for a roommate, Sophie knows everything there is to know about the undead, the unseen, and the uncanny. . .

Until a rash of gruesome murders has demons and mortals running for cover, and Sophie finds herself playing sidekick to detective Parker Hayes. Dodging raging bloodsuckers, bad-tempered fairies, and love-struck trolls is one thing. But when Sophie discovers Parker isn't what he seems, she's got only one chance to figure out whom to trust. Because an evil hiding in plain sight is closing in. . .and about to make one wisecracking human its means to ultimate power. . .

Book Once Upon a Time Boxed Set

Once Upon a Time by Maggie Shayne is 99c! This boxed set features the first two books in her Fairies of Rush series. Two twin sisters with fairy roots are trying to make a home in the real world, though they soon find themselves called back to their enchanted home of Rush. The second book even has an enemies-to-lovers plot. Readers warn of the slow pacing, but the magical setting and character development makes up for it. The set holds a 4.7-star rating on GR.

Fairytale:

A chance to believe…

As a boy, Adam Reid stumbled into an enchanted forest — and met a magical lady who showed him his destiny. Now he is a sober and serious adult. And memories have faded of a childhood event that could not possibly have occurred…could it?

Brigit Malone is on a mission — a dangerous, larcenous quest that leads the mysterious lovely into Adam Reid's home…and heart. For sparks fly when her warm ebony gaze meets his sapphire stare — and a passionate enchantment binds them with invisible chains. But it would be insane for Adam to believe Brigit's arrival had been foretold — or that the sensuous minx is truly half-fairy — even as they travel together down an impossible path toward a dire peril only the magic of love can overcome…

Forever Enchanted

In a world of cars and shopping malls, Bridin sells New Age trinkets–and waits for the man who can help her return home to an enchanted kingdom called Rush. She meets a rugged stranger, who is actually Tristan, the usurper who stole her kingdom. Tristan, deposed by his brother, has escaped into the mortal realm determined to win and wed Bridin–for only the magic of their passion can save their enchanted homeland.

Book Some Girls Bite

Some Girls Bite by Chloe Neill is $1.99 at Amazon and Barnes & Noble! Urban fantasy with some hints of romance, Some Girls Bite is the first book in the Chicagoland Vampire series. The cover recently had a pretty big facelift, by the way, and I think it's actually an improvement. Some found the books elements a little silly (i.e. continuous Buffy references), while others really enjoyed them. With a 4.0-star rating on GR, has anyone tried this series?

They killed me. They healed me. They changed me.

Sure, the life of a graduate student wasn’t exactly glamorous, but I was doing fine until Chicago’s vampires announced their existence to the world. When a rogue vampire attacked me, I was lucky he only got a sip. Another bloodsucker scared him off and decided the best way to save my life was to make me the walking undead.

Now I’ve traded sweating over my thesis for learning to fit in at a Hyde Park mansion full of vamps loyal to Ethan “Lord o’ the Manor” Sullivan. Of course, as a tall, green-eyed,
four-hundred-year-old vampire, he has centuries’ worth of charm, but unfortunately he expects my gratitude—and servitude. Right…

But someone’s out to get me. Is it the rogue vampire who bit me? A vamp from a rival House? An angry mob bearing torches?

My initiation into Chicago’s nightlife may be the first skirmish in a war—and there will be blood.

Book Midnight on Julia Street

Midnight on Julia Street by Ciji Ware is $2.99! This is the first book in Ciji's Time Travel series and, as the name suggests, features the much loved time travel trope (say that three times fast!). Our heroine is a reporter covering the French Quarter in New Orleans and she's blessed with the ability to see things from the past. Readers who are natives of the area found some historical inaccuracies, but found the mixture of past and present to be interesting and well-balanced. Does this hit anyone's buttons?

Feisty reporter Corlis McCullough isn't afraid to push boundaries in the name of journalistic integrity. When passion for the truth lands her in New Orleans in need of a job, an assignment at a TV station pits her against her old college nemesis, King Duvallon.

The sultry streets of the French Quarter, the glamorous Garden District, derelict riverfront cotton warehouses, and gritty back alleys come alive as the reporter's story inexplicably slips between the nineteenth century and today. A long-forgotten drama of blackmail, swindles, and a love affair that is still changing lives leaves Corlis and King wondering if their burgeoning, unholy attraction will render them pawns in a matrix of mystery and deceit.

Another day, another PSA: Anne Rice’s Interview with the Vampire is on sale for $1.99 right now—both for Kindle and Nook. Not sure about other platforms or countries other than the US.

  2. Lynnd says:

I read Midnught on Julia Street when it first came out many years ago (don’t want to actually look at how long it’s been) and re-read a few years ago when I was doing a purge of my bookshelves.  I remember really enjoying it both times.  I thought both the present and past story lines were interesting and well executed.  The characters were engaging.  It still remains on my bookshelf.

  3. Hannah says:

I’ve been reading Chloe Neil’s Chicagoland Vamps series for a while now. 3 books ago (counting the latest release, which is coming out soon) the series kinda stalled out for me. I really enjoyed the earlier ones, but for whatever reason I can’t get into it. I had preordered the books, and I started it, but I just haven’t wanted to read it.

Could possibly have something to do with….

killing off one of the main characters. The dynamic just hasn’t been the same ever since, even though he was brought back. Overall, I do think it’s a decent series, with the earlier books being superior 🙂

  4. LauraL says:

@ Lynnd – Midnight on Julia Street is on my keeper’s shelf, too, and is well-worn from re-reading. Hmmm, a Kindle version would be on my cloud indefinitely.

  5. Lia says:

Thanks! Added Maggie Shayne and Ciji Ware to my TBR-pile. Because I didn’t have enough to read already! 🙂

Both deals work internationally as well.

  6. Jen says:

Another vote for Midnight on Julia Street here! I just happened upon it when I was looking for a book about New Orleans before we visited. It was really charming. I don’t like time travel books normally but this wasn’t like a time machine type thing, more like flashbacks. I thought the main characters were wonderful and every time I read it, it makes me want to go back to New Orleans!

  7. Celia Marsh says:

I love the Hannah Jayne Under series, though I am a SUCKER for paranormal CSI books, so I may be biased.  Still, it has a nice non-invincible main character who manages to avoid the TSTL pitfalls that the non-invincible seem to often encounter.
