COOL. CALM. COLLECTED…

Nothing fazes Taylor Donovan. In the courtroom, she never lets the opposition see her sweat. In her personal life, she never lets any man rattle her—not even her cheating ex-fiancé. So when she’s assigned to coach People’s “Sexiest Man Alive” for his next big legal drama, she refuses to fall for the Hollywood heartthrob’s charms. Even if he is the Jason Andrews.

CONFIDENT. FAMOUS. IRRESISTIBLE…

Jason Andrews is used to having women fall at his feet. When Taylor Donovan gives him the cold shoulder, he’s thrown for a loop. She’s unlike any other woman he’s ever met: uninterested in the limelight, seemingly immune to his advances, and shockingly capable of saying no to him. She’s the perfect challenge. And the more she rejects him, the more he begins to realize she may just be his perfect match…

Book Between the Sheets

Between the Sheets by Molly O'Keefe is also discounted for pre-order at $4.27/$4.99. This is book 3 of the Boys of Bishop series, and is contemporary romance. Molly O'Keefe's writing is unique in that there's a lot of powerful emotion in the storylines, and the heroines are really challenging to read about sometimes. They are strong characters, who often have to make really tough choices – their paths are not always easy. They make for frequently compelling reads (NB: I'm basing that opinion on previous O'Keefe books, as I haven't read these yet).

After years of running, Wyatt Svenson has now parked himself in Bishop, Arkansas, trying to do the right thing and parent a son he didn’t even know he had until recently. Over six feet tall and packed with muscles and power, Ty likes to get his hands dirty, fixing his motorcycle at night and keeping his mind away from the mistakes he’s made. Then his pretty neighbor shows up on his driveway, doesn’t bother to introduce herself, and complains about the noise. First impression? She should loosen up. Funny that she turns out to be his son’s elementary school art teacher—and the only one willing to help his troubled boy. Ty needs her. In more ways than one.

Though Shelby Monroe is safe in her structured life, she is drawn to Ty’s bad-boy edge and rugged sexuality. What if she just lets it all go: her worries about her mother, her fear of heartbreak, and her tight self control? What if she grabs Ty and takes a ride on the wild side? “What if” becomes reality—intense, exhilarating . . . and addictive. But Ty wants more than a secret affair. He wants it all with Shelby. But will she take a chance and open her heart? Ty is determined to convince Shelby to take the biggest risk of her life: on him.

Book Black Dog

Black Dog by Rachel Neumeier is $5.38 at Amazon as a Kindle Daily Deal – what a strange KDD price. It's 46% off but Amazon has sort of conditioned me to expect KDDs of $1-$3 at the most.

This is a paranormal YA novel – the description says think of it as Robin McKinley's SUNSHINE but with werewolves instead of vampires. It was on sale recently, too, so if you were thinking about it and missed the deal, here it is again! This book was published in February 2014, and this review, from Andrea, made me really, really curious about this book (it's a great review):

This is one of those pick-it-up-and-read-til-done books, gripping and engrossing. Something of a surprise to me, given that I am generally not at all interested in werewolf stories, which are too often a morass of gender essentialism, abuse treated as sexy, and all the things I just don't like to read at all.

That is not this book.

Natividad is Pure, one of the rare girls born able to wield magic. Pure magic can protect humans against the supernatural evils they only half-acknowledge–the blood kin or the black dogs. In rare cases–like for Natividad's father and older brother–Pure magic can help black dogs find the strength to control their dark powers.

But before Natividad's mother can finish teaching her magic their enemies find them. Their entire village in the remote hills of Mexico is slaughtered by black dogs. Their parents die protecting them. Natividad and her brothers must flee across a strange country to the only possible shelter: the infamous black dogs of Dimilioc, who have sworn to protect the Pure.

In the snowy forests of Vermont they are discovered by Ezekiel Korte, despite his youth the strongest black dog at Dimilioc and the appointed pack executioner. Intrigued by Natividad he takes them to Dimilioc instead of killing them. Now they must pass the tests of the Dimilioc Master.

Alejandro must prove he can learn loyalty and control even without his sister's Pure magic. Natividad's twin Miguel must prove that an ordinary human can be more than a burden to be protected.

And even at Dimilioc a Pure girl like Natividad cannot remain unclaimed to cause fighting and distraction. If she is to stay she must choose a black dog mate.

Andrea’s review made me go and buy Black Dog, although I haven’t had a chance to read it yet (enjoying Bec McMaster’s London Steampunk series).  Thanks, Andrea!

  2. Vasha says:

I haven’t read Black Dog, but I do agree that Rachel Neumeier can really write. The City in the Lake is sort of what you’d get if Patricia McKillip wrote the Chronicles of Narnia, and I mean that as a compliment! No matter if I side-eye its Narnia-like morality, the novel was rich enough to savor more than once.

Even though Audible’s Terms and Conditions state that the deal expires at midnight on April 21, the credit was added to my account. Go, Audible. Thanks for posting the link, SB Sarah.

Adding another recommendation to Black Dog! I don’t know if I’d call it like Sunshine just because Sunshine’s stream-of-consciousness narrator made that novel feel a lot lighter for the darkness of the plot, but it definitely changes the rules we’ve come to expect. I think I’d liken it more to Joe Abercrombie’s fantasy—dark and a little gritty, character-driven as much as plot-driven, but it gives you people to care about and root for even if there are a lot of shades of grey involved.

I paid full price for it after reading reviews when it was on sale, and I don’t regret it—not even seeing it go on sale like this a week after. 😉

  5. Tam says:

I bought ‘Black Dog’ in the last sale, and seriously loved it.  I thought I was a bit over YA paranormal werewolves, but this really was something new and different.  (Also, my children got sadly neglected during the last few chapters because I honestly couldn’t put it down.  Sorry about the frozen pizza dinner, kids…)

  6. Darbi Bradley says:

I also read Black Dog because of the review. Totally fantastic, so happy I did. It’s really really very good. There are so many paranormal/werewolf YA and romance books out there that it’s hard to find one where the mythology is truly different or surprising.  Black Dog is one of those few truly different books. Great book, and great story overall, even if the “romance” part is pretty weak.

  7. Virginia E says:

I hit the sale at ARE early this morning. The other nice thing about these rebate sales is that they are eligible for ARE’s Buy-10-Get-1-Free loyalty program. So not only did I get credits to buy other books, but I earned at least one free title. The one warning is that ARE’s offers go from midnight Central Time zone to 11:59 Central Time zone which is an hour late than the usual Eastern time zone standard.
