Angela James on The Marilyn Denis Show

Carina Press executive editor Angela James was on The Marilyn Denis Show this morning, which is a live national broadcast in Canada. Live. Also, national. And LIVE TELEVISION. Wowser! I was trying to watch the live feed but couldn’t get it to work. But no worries: the clip of Angie’s appearance is up on the Marilyn.ca website already!
Angie’s segment was all about digital reading devices, and how women romance readers are a driving force in the development of the digital reading market. She demonstrated the different devices, gave a brief overview of the differences between the Kindle, the Sony Pocket, and the Kobo, and explained the best way to keep one dry when reading in the bathtub.
I cannot even imagine the stress of a live national television appearance, but with a studio audience of receptive and eager viewers, and a host who took both romance and digital reading seriously, that was a home run for romance reader exposure, and Angie hit it out of the park. Way to go!
(NB: The total giggle on my part: I’ve been working for most of the day on an article for Kirkus about the good and bad of reading romance digitally. I have one more excellent source to cite now!)

I noticed on this site that the Nook isn’t mentioned much. Why is that?
Everything I read lately is on my nook and I absolutely love digital format. Since I’ve been reading series lately it’s nice to be able to get the next book in line as soon as I finish with the current one. Great way to keep track of my wish list too!!!

I’ve been seriously considering making the leap to e-books. Especially since we will not be able to go out of town every other weekend to get books like we have in the past. I suppose it would be nice when something comes out on a Tuesday not to have to wait until Saturday to try to get it!
You may have already seen it, but on cnn.com there is a short video on e-readers and romance. The title is E-readers can’t get enough romance.

Wow, Angela did a great job and thanks, Sarah for the heads up on this. I have a Kindle but a few of my friends are considering what e-reader to buy and I’ve just sent them the link so they can be a little better informed.
p.s. Angela - if you’re reading this, can you please divulge where you got your awesome necklace? WANT!!!

Is the Nook available in Canada? I think it is not so that would be why it was not included but please do correct me if I am wrong there.

Joanne—I’ve seen a version of this necklace in black sold on Etsy.com. This is a really nice site folks where lots of very clever handmade items are sold. I usually feel good I’m buying something from a local craftsperson when I buy from them.

I don’t think the Nook is available here in Canada. I’ve never seen it at a retail outlet or advertised.

I had to look for the video Sam mentioned. Here’s a link:

Apparently romance readers like to read. Oh, and ereaders provied a “veil of secrecy” so noone has to know you’re reading a book with a naughty cover.

Thanks for the info, Joy!

I like her “read” necklace.

I see a potential etsy market for making ereader covers out of old book covers—the only one I saw was a Hardy Boys one, but I think old cheesy romance covers would make fabulous ereader covers. No matter what you are actually reading—hide that shameful Kafka reading habit behind some Beatrice Small

Thanks so much, Sarah!
@Tracy, Sarah is correct. The nook isn’t available in Canada, so it didn’t make sense to present it to a Canadian TV audience. In fact, my house has become somewhat of a clearing house for Canadians wanting nooks. I’ve taken delivery of no less than 5 that I’ve had to turn around and ship to a Canadian friend!
@Joanne, the necklace did come from Etsy. I’ve contacted the seller to give her a chance to put the necklaces up on her store before I give the link, but I’ll be sure to share the link on my blog and Twitter feed as soon as I can.
@GLH there are several Etsy sellers who repurpose books for ebook covers. I rather lust after a Nancy Drew one. They generally use the smaller hardcovers, though (like Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew), and I think that’s why you don’t see many romance ones. Hard to find those in a small hardcover size.

@Angela James
I was actually thinking even paperback covers could be used inside a cover with a clear vinyl vel sim. over it. I didn’t see a Nancy Drew one but share your lust for one.

Here’s the post about where I got my necklace (I had to wait until the seller had more in stock to share the link!) http://nicemommy-evileditor.com/blog/2011/01/31/the-read-necklace/
