A Touch of Scandal: Spend Avon’s Money And Help Rescue Kitties

by SB Sarah | September 27, 2010 | Monday at 10:36 am | 822 Comments

Book CoverHello. Ah am Gracie. Ah am one of Sarah’s cats. Ah am one of two girls in this house. Everyone else is a boy.

That is the disgusting.

Here is me. Am Ah not pretty? Ah am pretty. You can send me the tributes. Ah like the Pounce.

Sarah asked me to write the entry today because Ah have not ever done so, despite sitting on many, if not all, of Sarah’s romance novels. Mah Gawd, they are everywhere. Piles of them. Ah like to drape my

hairy backside

- ahem - beautiful puffulous posterior across as many as possible, especially if they are in the sun. The books make mah furs glitter, and Ah hear that is very desirable.

Let us go back a minute. Aren’t Ah pretty? Yes, thank you. Admire Mah

Booty

Beauty.

Anyway, this is my brother, Oliver. Sarah calls him The Diggus. Ah call him The Stupid. He is the very dumb. Oliver and Ah were born in Brooklyn. We are rescue kitties adopted from North Shore Animal League. Sarah adopted us because it was the easiest way she knew of to make sure she and Mah Man didn’t break up when they moved in together. See? Ah am pretty, and Ah am the relationship guarantee, in one pretty furry package.

Then came The Spawn, and his late brother, The Foo. They are rescue kitties, too, from… oh, Ah do not care where they are from, but I wish Spawn would go back there. He is annoying.  There are more boys, too: DOG Boys. Can you imagine the indignity? First, there was Toto, and Logan, who both came from the Petfinder.org. And now there are the TWO boy dogs - this is unacceptable but no one is listening to me, here. Buzz and Zeb are from a kill shelter in Arkansas, and Ah will tell you between us that Ah am glad they are here, but Ah wish they would stop trying to sniff Mah Butt. Indignity, Ah tell you.

Anyways. Sarah asked me to write this to tell you that the people at the Avon Books have lost their ever loving’ minds. First they wanted to make a book trailer, but when they said Ah could not be The Star, I said, No. Spend your money somewhere else. Like on me. Then they said no. So then we had the idea. Their author, Liz Carlyle, has rescue cats (clearly, she is the woman of the excellent taste) and to celebrate her new book, One Touch of Scandal, Avon is doing A Touch Of the Crazypants Fund Raising.

For every comment left here, and at a collection of other blogs about the romance, AvonBooks will be donating $1 to Cat Angels, a rescue organization chosen by the Ms. Carlyle. She has the good taste, yes.

The donation will be capped at $3000.00 US, with one comment per person, though you can comment at the other sites including Avon Romance, DearAuthor, Romantic Times Blog, Borders TrueRomance, Fresh Fiction among others (links to come! - SBS). Comments will remain open until we hit $3000.00, or 3000 comments across all the different sites. How long do you think that crazy will take?

If you have the time for that kind of thing. Ah personally am due for Mah Nap.

So go leave the comments here and elsewhere. Feel free to compose odes to the awesome of animal rescue, or to Mah Beauty, or both, and help rescue kitties, like me. $3000, 3000 comments, all for the kitty rescue. Leave the comment, spend the dollar. Is easy.

Because rescue kitties like me, we are the Awesome. And so pretty, did you not notice? Yes, Ah know. So pretty.

Diggus, Spawn, Gracie, and Zeb have a message for you:

    AWESOME IDEA!

Interesting factoid for the day: In Australia 90% of cats in shelters are euthanased rather than rehomed.  This compares to around 10% of dogs that are euthanased and not rehomed.
Thanks to Avon and Ms Carlyle.

My spam word is stay32. I’d love to let 32 rescue kitties stay, but I think the litter boxes would be way too much ;-)

I used to volunteer at the Save the Animals no-kill shelter in Cincinnati when I lived there—-my parents still do.

Many older kitties have come home with us over the years, some of them as handsome as Oliver and gorgeous as Gracie, but mostly not.  I mean really not.  But we love them anyway.

Thank you Avon!  And all the blogs making this possible!

My cat Elliot was a rescue from the local Animal Rescue League and it was love at first sight.  I opened the cage door and he rolled over for me to rub his belly - how could I say no?  Five years later and he is still a constant source of comfort.  Thanks Avon for helping to save the kitties.  We all need a little fur ball to snuggle.

Pretty kitties!  We will be springing a couple of kittens from the Big House as soon as the younger offspring is old enough to take responsibility (i.e. scoopin’ the poop).  She’s been doing the hard sell all year, so I’m thinking that it might be a furry Christmas.

I adopted two kitties from a non-kill shelter in Ohio long ago. Best. Cats. Ever. I also support BEST FRIENDS animal shelter in Utah, a non-kill shelter for all sorts of animals.

Yes, Miss Gracie, you are one beautiful kitty.

Our cat is a rescue cat also.  9 years later, she is still leaving tasty morsels from her daily successful hunts on our doorstep in gratitude.  We love her but the gratitude, it is enough.  Good on Avon for spreading the love.

I so, so want a kitty.  I miss the cat my family had for 17ish years.  I was 12 when she died and am still trying to convince my dad that allergy medicine was invented for reason.  Mulitiple times this past month I have been tempted to sneak a kitten into the apartment, but the bathroom is too small for a litter box :( (and i don’t think my roommates would like a cat)  Good charity and thanks to you, beautiful Gracie, for letting me know about it.

My brother and his wife rescue cats in Minneapolis.  They aren’t going to have kids, so they’ve got cats instead.  They only have two currently, but they’re both very pretty kitties, just like Gracie AND they’re girls! They and Gracie should totally become facebook friends.

Sadly I can’t rescue cats, I’m horribly allergic to them. And I’ve no room for dogs. :( But I’m more than happy to help out those who can!  So here’s my comment. And kudos to those who help rescue pets and to the SB ladies for promoting such a great cause.

We’ve got one at my place and though she’s quite tiny (always been the runt of the litter) she makes up for her solo-kitty status of the house and her size with sheer force of personality. @redheadedgirl: Ah am over 13 years old (though Ah do not tell many peoples that) so Ah think that Ms. Harris was inspired by me when she created the Sookie. Though the Sookie she is not as pretty as me.

The Miss Carlyle, she says Ah am the dilute calico and that we has the reputation for being the bitchy. Can you imagine? This is not the news.

Ah am most pleased by the moneys for the kittehs. You are all awesome and almost as pretty as me.

Wonderful idea. I, His Most Spikalicious King Spike of Spikington, do hereby give my royal seal of approval. If not for the valiant and heroic work of Cats Protection in sheltering my mother, my infant siblings and myself, I might never have risen to the position I rightfully occupy: namely, as Supreme Ruler of the Universe, which I oversee from my comfortable house, kept by my staff of devoted slaves, and assisted by my carefully chosen acolytes: Jack, Daisy, and Jemima.

Of course, even the Supreme Ruler of the Universe has his nemesis. If anyone knows how to get rid of a Demon Puppy, you would find your monarch a very grateful cat.

    Royally yours,

    Spike

Yay! I have a rescue kitty myself. Our neighbors moved away and left her to fend for herself, so when we moved we snatched her up and brought her with us. I just couldn’t leave her to starve or take her to a shelter where she’d be put to sleep. She’s now a fat, happy indoor cat with more personality than is good for her! :)

Awww!  This isn’t going to take long at all!  I grew up in the country and I had no idea people actually went to animal shelters to get pets because ours always just showed up . . . dumped by unfeeling arseholes because cats are wild creatures don’t you know and can survive in the wilds of Idaho with wolves and foxes and bears and other predators.  Idiots.  I actually have a kitty right now I acquired this way.  And then I have two others I got at a shelter.  Kitties are the best!

And now she snuggles and purrs and sits on laps and is happy. Hooray for the rescued kittehs!  Both of our kitty boys were rescued.  One from a drop off at a friend’s farm (why do people DO That?!  It’s not like farmers have money to feed hordes of cats!)  And the other one adopted us out of all the houses in our neighborhood after his crazypants (no really) owner was taken to live someplace nice and quiet.  So yay for adopting the kitties!

And really PLEASE don’t drop your kitties off at a farm, they can’t afford them either and you’re just creating problems for other people it’s not nice.

Izzabelle is the self appointed Princess in our home.  She’s the only female cat and likes to keep it that way.  She rules with an iron paw.  We found her on Petfinders and had to bring her into our family!  Gabriel, our male cat and Izzy’s reluctant subject, was someone’s throw away.  When he showed up at work on a cold Nov. morning was about 6 mo. old and weighted around 4 lbs.  He wasn’t much more than skin and bones.  Now he’s twice as tall and long as Izzy and weighs twice as much.  And he’s thin!  If we were to ever to adopt another cat it would be another male, I don’t think Iz would be very happy if we brought another female in.
We also have 2 female Labs, Iz likes to think she has them under her thumb too.  They’re litter mates and no end to trouble.  I can’t wait until they’re 2 years old and start acting like they have brains.
    Save 2 lives, Adopt!

Most of the pets I’ve had through out my life have been from shelters.

The few that weren’t were special cases. The first was when I was a kid. A cat who’s mom was an alley cat behind our building. She died and left a littler behind. By the time we all realized this there was only one kitten left. We bottle fed him. The second cat came from an elderly lady who had to go in to a care facility. Her niece knew my uncle and we ended up with this HUGE adult cat who had been de-clawed and was terrified of the outdoors. He quickly endeared himself to the family and the little kids learned that just because a cat has no claws does not mean it can’t defend itself. That cat had a mean right cross. The last was a black lab puppy that my mother-in-law nearly ran over. Apparently it’s ma had been hit and was lying dead by the side of the road. My mother-in-law didn’t want it, bu she couldn’t leave it by the roadside, so we ended up taking it. We haven’t had a pet since we had to give her away because of an out of state move to an apartment with no pets. I’d never had to give a pet up before and having to give her up hurt so we decided no more pets until we have our own home. At least she ended up in a good place. One of my husband’s co-workers knew someone who had a several black labs and a large farm with room to run.

My late rescue kitty, Stella, would be very happy about Avon’s promotion. My dog Anna, not so much.

    Hellp Gracie -

While we have never met I am quite aware of your beauty (although I am just as, if not slightly more, beauteous) as I am Emily of the Iron Lesbians. They come to your house and gaze upon your beauty every now and then.  While they think I am their cat, really they are my staff.  However, that stupid poodle poochie, Autumn, is the bane of my existence and I do not understand why she is permitted to breathe my air. I express this sentiment loudly on a daily basis.  I am quite impressed that you have managed to get someone to donate money to help rescue kitties.  My dear departed sister, Sylvia, and I were rescued from a box at the Berlin Mart in New Jersey.  I think Sylvia was dropped on her head prior to her rescue because she was never quite right but I should not speak ill of the dead even if it did make my life easier when she “passed.”  I would say “come visit me” but I am not so fond of other cats really so let’s not kid ourselves.  We must gaze upon each other’s beauty from afar.

Cats are wonderful!!!! As soon as I don’t live in my death-trap, anti-pet apartment anymore, I will be having one for myself. For sure. :) Thanks for the message, Grace!

I wish I could get paid a dollar for thirty second’s work. I wish it could be a dollar every thirty seconds.

This is such a lovely idea, almost as lovely as Gracie:) The oldest cat in my home is a shelter kitty-my sister picked him out as a Christmas gift-and he is the best.

We have a pair of kitten girls(born out in the wilds of Upstate New York and rescued by one of our relatives who passed them on to us)who drive him crazy but they all manage to get along somehow. Rescue kitties rule!
