A Heaping Pile of Signed Books: A Giveaway!
by SB Sarah | April 20, 2009 | Monday at 3:53 am | 233 CommentsAfter the signing at Turn the Page Bookstore, where the people are awesome and the diet Pepsi is DAMN cold, I asked each author to sign a book of their choice for a giveaway on this here hot pink page of Bitchery madness. I carried that giant pile to the cash register and managed not to drop any, then I carefully packed them in the trunk of the car and drove them home, where they are now hidden in the china cabinet of my house, where toddlers and cats fear to tread. Seriously, signed books? OMG. SO precious.
I mentioned on Twitter that I’d be giving away the Hella Pile Sequestered in My China Cabinet, and it’s time to rock and roll. Thanks to @YoungLibrarian on Twitter, I have a quest for you folks who would like this Hella Pile of Sequestered Books. You know the Inn Boonsboro has rooms named for famous romantic couples, right? Your task, should you like to win the pile of books, is to come up with an additional room for the Inn. It has to be a romantic couple, even one from a romance novel you adore, and it has to be a couple that has a happy ending. No tragic deaths or wasting away from a massive head cold or some shit like that. Happy endings, yo. Extra awesome points for those who mention the decor or decorating theme of the room based on the couple they choose. Could be a color scheme or a piece of furniture, but get funky, folks.
You have 24 hours starting now, so leave your room/couple suggestions and any decorating ideas in the comments. Winner will be selected from the comments and will receive the following pile of signed books - every one of which is new and signed by the author. So get busy with your romantic inclinations.
ETA: Nora Roberts has also added to the pile of signed books! She’s going to send me a signed Advanced Reader Copy of her upcoming July hardcover, Black Hills, which features a childhood-friends-to-lovers relationship (paging Jane, party of one, your favorite trope is ready) between a wildlife biologist in South Dakota and a New York City investigator who moves to the Black Hills. This brings the total book count to fifteen - yay!

Wow, I’m seriously drooling over that stack of books.
I’m thinking the Shade and Runa room (Desire Unchained.) Chains on the walls and hooks built into the headboard *g*

Oh em gee. I about died when I saw the first room/couple was Marguerite and Percy. Was there ever a more precious couple?
I’m going to go with…geez this is tough. I don’t want to pick a couple that would have a similar room to what is already there… but I also want the couple to be well known - or at least sufficiently known that visitors would squee.
Heh. I could go with one of Nalini Singh’s shifters- but while I love them, I don’t know that I could stomach a room with… animal print.
Oh my gosh - I have it. Wyatt Earp and Josie Marcus. I’m quite fond of the movie(s), and heck - they’re a real life couple too… the decor? Very old west. :) All that great stuff.
(lol my word is “size63” I hope not!)

Ash & Tory room. It would totally have to be gothy looking with black roses with skulls.
I’ll have to think up some more

A room with a cast iron fire in the wall, tung and groove boarding on the walls painted an ivory colour. The massive bed takes up most of the room, heavy burgundy drapes hanging from the ceiling around the heavy 4 posted mahogany bed. A tall dresser matches the bed with a wardrobe to match in the dark mahogany as well. To finish the setting a wash stand with blue glaze bowl and pitcher await the occupants use. The door opens to the lovers Catherine and Heathcliffe coming in to spend their lives and afterlives together. Wuthering Heights from Charlotte Bronte would be a great addition to the Inn.

Verity and Stuart from Sherry Thomas’s “Delicious”. Maybe a room done in mauve and royal blue.

I’m going to go with a room for Caroline and Ashdon from Claudia Dain’s The Courtesan’s Daughter. And the room, of course, would be designed around a single, perfect porcelain cup, like Sophia’s White Salon: waxed dark wood floors, blue damask linens with white velvet accents, and some really nice pale blue silk wallpaper. There would be a footman in the loo. He would have an accent and would hand me heated towels as I lounge for days in the luxurious tub. Aaaahhhh.
I was trying to think of one from my favorite Nora book, but you can’t have that much tartan in a single room and expect anyone to sleep there.

Seth & Drusilla
Beautiful artwork of boats placed through out the room. A gorgeous picture of “Drusilla” as a main vocal point in the room. Vivid Hand Spun Glass or Fresh Colorful flowers. The room should have the “cottage” feel. Walls painted cerulean blue with floral rugs on pine floors & antique furnishings. The sleigh bed to be covered with a quilt with interlocking rings/rosebuds.
I picked this for a room for this contest, because Seth was a big inspiration through out the 4 book of the Chesapeake Bay Series.

Cal and Min from Bet Me - as for decor, I think Disney snow globes are a must. And there should also be Arts and Crafts style furnishings with a Mission couch.

LOL. Wyatt’s first sherrif job was in my town—southwest MO, he took over from his dad who became judge. His first wife, Urilla, is buried in a rural cemetary (located on our family farm). He left town owing a bunch of money.
Just saying.

Since my friend and I were just talking about this book earlier today, I have to choose Cal and Jane from Susan Elizabeth Phillips’ Chicago Stars series (Nobody’s Baby But Mine). It would be a great room with a very nice computer because Jane is constantly on hers. The complimentary breakfast every morning would be Lucky Charms (of course!!) and there would always be a stack of post-it notes somewhere!
Also - a nice big bow somewhere, just because. :D

i think a scottish room decorated with the colors and plaids of the fraser and mackenzie clans would make a great addition. the characters are jamie and claire fraser from diana gabaldon’s outlander series. they definitely have their ups and downs but reunite and (so far) live happily together.

In 7th grade, before I discovered romance novels (that would be 8th grade), I read An Old-Fashioned Girl by Louisa May Alcott. To this day, it is hands-down one of my favourite books and Polly and Tom one of my favourite couples. I would love to see a Tom and Polly room. In terms of decor (and I’m a history of decorative arts masters student, so bear with me here!), I would create a slice of Postbellum New England in winter. It would be a smallish room, cozy, with a potbelly stove in a corner, decorated largely in the Colonial Revival style. The bed would be a dark wood four poster (with simple turned posts) or a sleigh (much like the one in Louisa’s own bedroom). Ideally, there would be a piano for Polly, but I could see that being a problem in a hotel. A small, simple fall-front ladies writing desk (again, I’m imagining one like Louisa’s) with dried or fresh flowers in a pewter vase sitting atop it. The bed should have a handmade-type quilt (I love the Marie Webster “Daisy” design, but there’s a book all about Massachusetts textiles which looks like a great resource, too), a few rugs (hooked or woven) on the floor, and curtains at each window. The walls would have white wood paneling below the chair rail and sprigged floral wallpaper above. I would love to see two small shadowbox frames hung side-by-side, one with a replica of Polly’s locket, the other a replica of Tom’s pocket-book, opened to show “his Polly’s rose.”
So as not to overwhelm with girlyness or leave Tom out of it entirely, there should be little references to the West throughout, such as photos like this one on the walls, as well as pieces of horse tack.
...I may have gotten a little carried away here. Still, An Old-Fashioned Girl is a beautiful book and Tom and Polly a sweetly strong, inspiring couple, whose struggles resonate to this day. I highly recommend the book, and would totally stay in the room! I had so much fun doing this, what a great contest!

It’s so hard to choose. There are excellent couples that leave marks in your memories from Roberts’s own titles but that would be cheating at least it seems in my opinion it would be because it’s like sucking up somehow. And I was going to suggest a couple from a Sherrilyn Kenyon Novel, but that’s already been taken. This question is extremely difficult, to be asked to choose only one of the hundreds of couples I’ve watched fall in love and fallen in love with in the process. I’m closing my eyes and randomly picking from my favorites because to choose just one from so many amazing couples is impossible.
I will say Drustan and Gwen from Karen Marie Moning’s Kiss of the Highlander.
You can’t help but fall in love with the couple because of all the challenges they face to fall in love with a man who should not exist and then be pulled to a time where he doesn’t know you and convince him of who you are and to have to make him fall for you again only to think you’ve lost him once more as you’re pulled back to your own time. Then to find him yet again there waiting for you, the book is like an emotional roller coaster. You can’t help but feel for a couple like that especially when you get the happy ending and the pretty bow all at the end.
Since Drustan is from Scotland in the year 1518 the room should be reminiscent of a something you’d picture in a Scottish keep, stone fire places, Scottish plaids. Possibly a with a display with one of those big swords whose name is not coming to mind right now. Hopefully you know the one I mean. It should have that ancient, manly feel of historic manly man, but add in a few modern feminine touches. Possibly add some runes into the mix, maybe carved into the headboard of the bed to give it some druid heritage, as sense of the magic of the couple and room. A photo of stone henge would be a must to combine both modern touches and druid roots since the stones are an important part of the books. But what for Gwen… something to make the room distinctively Gwen’s as well….She into science and likes to read and play chess so maybe a chess set on a table or a few books old fashioned titles maybe something from Einstein. I’m not sure. Maybe just an embroidered pillow or two would give it enough of that feminine touch to remind you that she was a part of it to. He was the more dominant part of the relationship and he’s given everything to be pulled a time that wasn’t his own just to be with her again, so I think the room would reflect him and his heritage more than her and hers simply because he gave up his time and has she decorated the room she’d want it to comfort him as much as possible.

I’m going to go with Rowena and Warrick from Prisoner of My Desire by Johanna Lindsey. The room could have a nice mirror on the ceiling and double sets of chains on the bed - men’s and ladies versions - to help recreate as many rape-but-they-really-enjoyed-it scenes that one might like. If you’re really going crazy there could even be a side entry where you can have someone pretending to be the guest’s brother break in with lusty intentions and fight the hero, should people be into that kind of thing. Although I’d rather not know myself.

From Just the Sexiest Man Alive by Julie James…
I’ll sign up for a double-room built on the scale of hotstuff Jason Andrews Hollywood mansion with a soaring staircase that leads from the sitting room up to the bedroom, so that when heroine Taylor Donovan (aka me) swans down in pointy, strappy heels, Jason (aka my husband) will be watching me with admiration, heat, and love (and most likely a camera going click-click-click).

Cordelia and Aral, from Shards of Honor and Barryar, were the first couple I thought of. It would be romantic with a lake view, and a bit startling with an urban one.
It’s not precisely a romance novel, but Daddy Longlegs is my favorite book ever. So I’d love a room named after Jerusha and Jervis. It would have a lot of books in it. (I am not an imaginative interior decorator.)

The Fred & Ginger Suite (Astaire & Rogers)
White lacquered room with Art Deco fixings and furniture. Gleaming mirror floors on which to tap dance on. Complimentary sand provided in case you disturbed the occupant right below you with your dancing. Closet filled with complimentary powder blue feathered dresses and top hat, white tie, and tails.
This is a luxury suite which provides Eric Blore as your butler.

oh crud—you needed decorating too??? (I’d go against the slight S&M theme, because that wasn’t their relationship.) Instead, you need to go with her house in central France—beautiful brocades, large & comfortable bed and modern conveniences due to the Siovale engineers! (ha! got around that problem…)
There’d also be a touch of the eclectic around, citing from their adventures…a bear skin rug from Skaldia, some wall hangings from their time traveling through Africa and a touch of Ireland.

OK, I should be working, but I’ll play. Procrastination is a terrible disease. ;-) I am torn between John Thornton and Margaret Hale from Elizabeth Gaskell’s NORTH and SOUTH, and Jean Paget and Joe Harman from Nevil Shute’s A TOWN LIKE ALICE. I see that the Inn Boonboro already has a couple of rooms from 19th century England (albeit different eras), so my final choice is:
Jean Paget and Joe Harman from A TOWN LIKE ALICE by Nevil Shute. Since the novel spans from the beginning of World War II in England and British occupied Malaya, and goes through the end of the war up to the late 1940’s Australian outback, you’ve got a variety of styles to work with. I am thinking a very light and airy room, simply furnished, with large windows and French doors opening onto a comfortable porch facing the garden. Comfortable wicker furniture (chairs and table) are located on the porch for enjoying the warm summer evenings. The walls are light colored with subtly patterned wallpaper, and the floor is bamboo. Framed, brightly colored Malaysian batiks decorate the walls. There is a ceiling fan, and a simple but comfortable bed with a black cast iron metal bed frame, covered with a cheerful handmade quilt and pillows. A battered trunk is located at the foot of the bed. There is also an old fashioned makeup table with a mirror and a matching stool, and a couple of comfortable arm chairs and an end table. The bathroom can be simply decorated and tiled in black and white with hexagonal floor tiles, 1940s style. I’d go with a claw foot tub and a large shower stall (room for 2) with a rainforest rainfall shower head and side jets to bring back the Malaysian monsoon memories. Ice skates are available for winter recreation (Jean has fond memories of ice skating as a girl in England), and in the summer there is horseback riding (the outback, duh).
OK, end of fantasy. Thanks, Sarah, that was fun. ;-)

Well, I know I’m straying outside the genre a little here, but I’m going to have to go with Howl and Sophie from Howl’s Moving Castle. They remain my all time favorite couple. I don’t know if it’s Howl’s cowardly courage, Sophie’s no-nonsense sassy take on magic, or the fact that two very different and very human people manage to save the kingdom, fall in love, and become heroes without actually being heroes.
The Howl and Sophie room would need to have exposed wood beams, wood floors, all worn. In fact all the furniture would be a bit rustic, wooden of course, and used. It would need a fireplace, and a rickety stair. And a guitar.

here’s more—sans decorating (note to self : don’t play games like this after a few glasses of wine!)
Harry & Sally (When Harry Met Sally)—but for the dining room, only.
Jack & Lily from Legend—forest theme?
Lloyd & Diane—Say Anything (music room?)
Caprica 6 & Gaius for the sci-fi geeks (but I would so say no to this)
Niles & Daphnie from Frasier—urban Seattle
Harry & Ginny / Ron & Hermione from Harry Potter :D
George Burns & Gracie—for the smoking lounge?

Eugenides and Irene from The Thief, The Queen of Attolia, and The King of Attolia. Mind, the series isn’t finished yet, so it may end unhappily, but I highly doubt it. If you like your romance with well developed characters, seriously unhealthy relationships you can’t help rooting for, two extremely powerful women, a funny, angsty, terrified, brilliant hero, a cold, dangerous, uncertain, brilliant heroine, snark, politics, and gods… need I say more?

The Vaughn and Faith room for Nalini Singh’s Psy/Changelings. I picture a room designed like a tree house. It would come complete with a balcony and railing with vines attached for swinging (if that’s your thing). There would also be a loin cloth laid out on the bed, a requirement for all male guests. The bathroom would include a waterfall perfect for skinny dipping.

Cupid and Psyche
The decor would feature gauzy, sweeping fabric hanging from the four-poster bed, oil lamps, and lots of silk pillows comfortably arranged on an over-sized chaise lounge (I have no idea if this would evoke ancient Greece, but it’s a myth anyway, so I’m going with it). The balcony would be screened by a lushly planted container garden featuring a reproduction of this statue:

A copy of USA Today will be left outside the door every morning by the invisible servants. Irate mothers-in-law, three-headed dogs, and a council of the gods are not included.

I have one that is probably in a book, but that isn’t where I heard of them….anyway, Tarzan and Jane. I would do the netting on the bed, the only place I would have animal print is on the robes. I would think a mural on just one wall. After that, I don’t know.
I haven’t seen a Julie Garwood reference, so I’d have to go with one of her couples. Elizabeth and Geoffrey (Gentle Warrior) or Madelyn and Duncan (Honor’s Splendor) would be good ones. A big old fireplace in the bedroom. A big bed. Maybe a tapestry. I have a thing for one wall murals…maybe a painting of a castle…
I also like Brodick and Gillian. That room could have tartans/plaids as well as the fireplace and big bed… The mural there would be of a glen…
I have very little imagination when it comes to decorating…sorry.

I’m going to go way out of the box and go with Paul (Newman) and Joanne (Woodward)—a real-life romantic couple. Two smart, sexy people in love with each other and willing to work hard to remain committed to one another for 50 years. Paul once stated that his marriage’s longevity was attributed to “correct amounts of lust and respect”. Isn’t that a great thought? And I love his famous quotation when asked about the temptation of other women: “I have steak at home. Why go out for hamburger?” Who wouldn’t love it if their husband said that about them?
The room would have to be stylish yet comfortable. Lots of natural light, hardwood floors and a big comfy bed with lots of pillows in which you can imagine staying in bed all day and reading the Sunday paper—on and off anyway. There will be little touches of sexy throughout—a red brocade pillow on the sofa, a lamp that casts a warm encompassing glow from the bedside table, velvet drapes on the windows that, when closed, create a cozy cocoon. And maybe the brass bed has four posters, just in case someone needs to be tied up for a while…

Well, my go-to couple, Lizzy and Darcy, don’t inspire anything too unusual in the way of decor. Quite tasteful, the Darcys.
So I’ve decided I want an Ayla and Jondalar room.
Textured walls to simulate a cave, decorated with pictograms of curvy fertility goddesses. Perhaps a few mammoth tusks for inspiration. A big heap of (faux) furs and skins arranged before a roaring wood fire. And, of course, a hot spring…er, tub.

Cupid and Psyche Room
I could see this going one of two ways:
Original Cupid and Psyche- Lit only by candles by night, this luxuriously appointed suite offers a jacuzzi tub and selection of oils for a modern interpretation of a Roman bath with massage. Walk through this classic myth with your beloved on a stimulating safari for all senses! Enjoy in the zephyr-like, scented breeze when you walk into your room. Sink into our extra-thick rugs, our soul-soothing jacuzzi tub (big enough for two!), or head straight to the orgy-sized bed. Provide your own soundtrack, or choose one of our musical or natural selections to feed your love. Sample our ambrosial wine and fruit selection (fruits chosen as classical symbols of love, beauty, and sensuality like apples, pomegranates, and grapes, or select your own!) delivered by our unseen servants. Finally, unveil your lover in their god-like glory with a customizable amount of candlelight. Blindfolds provided for those who want to show that love truly is blind.
Or…
You could go with a modern NYC or psychiatrist’s office theme riffing off the newly redone Cupid tv show.

Lord Peter and Harriet Vane. Gotta be. They’re classic.

One of my favorite books when I was young was “The Far Pavilions” with Ash and Anjuli-Bai. They have nostalgia as well as exoticism (as un-PC as that is) going for them. Plus a room filled with gorgeously carved dark wood furniture draped with recycled saris in an array of rich colors AND a mosquito net. Total win.
OK. If I don’t win, I vote for Kelly Williams because I, also, completely loved “An Old-Fashioned Girl.”

My husband points out that the proposed WALL-E and EVE room is all EVE. “It needs an annex full of junk. Lovingly collected and displayed.”
I’m trying to think of how to decorate for Susannah and Gaaron from Angelica. Ideally, it would be a high room that can only be reached via flight. And no blankets, because of the intense body heat. Hmmm, possibly not all that cozy. ;-)

The Francine & Kachoo Southwestern Suite
“Lifted from the pages of Terry Moore’s Strangers In Paradise, this spacious southwestern suite possesses sweeping landscapes, lovingly rendered in oil and watercolor, and abundant natural light while the adobe walls are adored with the original canvases of one Katina “Kachoo” Choovanski - poignant nudes in both oil and acrylic accompanied by poems and original lyrics by the late Griffin Silver (as transcribed by Terry Moore). Full system surround sound is also included. It should be noted that this suite is child friendly and available for extended stays.”
Vidal and Mary’s Georgian Retreat
“Sure to tame the roughest Devil’s Cub, this luxurious room features lavish faux-Georgian furnishings and full course room service for your secret getaways, including a discrete hide-away card table for your gambling pleasure. The functional fireplace is dominated by a lustrous mantelpiece complete with replica pistol for your dueling needs.”
Beauty & the Beast
The Rose Room
““You may wish for anything, you are queen and mistress here.” So the book says in letters of gold, laid out upon the fresh turned velvet bedspread of the four poster bed that dominates this luscious library suite, scented with fresh roses. A faux-fur rug is laid out in front of the fireplace to keep the chill night away, and no mirrors mar the walls to distract our guests. Only finger food is served in this suite, and guests with children need be advised that the candlesticks, while gorgeous to look at, do no talk.”
Charles & Emma,
The Darwin Deluxe
“Victorian elegance melds with rational simplicity in this charming suite. Portraits of Charles and Emma Darwin flank the period writing desk, and our cheerful house finches greet our guests upon entry. On each night-stand a copy of the King James Bible keeps polite company with The Origin of Species, and tucked within the pages of each a replica list, in Charles’ hand, on the pros and cons of matrimony.”

Angel beat me to Peter Wimsey and Harriet Vane - they would fit beautifully with the other rooms, and there are several centuries of aristocratic English decorating to choose from.
Otherwise, there’s Jervaulx and Maddy fron Laura Kinsale’s Flowers from the Storm - a mixture of old English aristocrat and Quaker simplicity.
Or Smithy and Paula from Random Harvest - Art Deco.

The Lady & The Tramp Room:
Only the best for a top dog and his favorite bitch. STAY a night or two and see for yourselves. SIT on silk pillows or cashmere throws in front of the roaring fire. LEAVE IT to the staff to make your every wish come true, including your nightly bowl of spaghetti. LAY DOWN on 750-count Egyptian Cotton sheets or do it on the floor with your choice of rug.
Make no bones about it ... this is the perfect place to chase a little tail and get DOWN and dirty. COME. You won’t regret it.
For your added pleasure: spiked collars, leather harnesses, chains, leashes, rubber hot dogs and other sex toys are available on request.

Diana & Rothgar (Devilish, Jo Beverley)
Lovely Georgian opulence, lace, silks and velvets in the bedding, a sunken marble tub in the bathroom, afloat with rose petals.
Oh, and a lady’s maid and valet.

My first thought was Wesley and Princess Buttercup, but Nora has that one covered already.
So, I’ll add two suggestions:
Anne and Captain Wentworth from Persuasion - one of my all time favorites behind Pride and Prejudice. The room could be done in an understated nautical theme. Ahoy!
Nikolas and Emma Stokehurst from Prince of Dreams by Lisa Kleypas - my current read. Think over-the-top Russian decor. Exotic and luxurious

Maybe one of the oldest fairytale-esque stories: Cupid and Psyche. Love, betrayal, lesson learned, happy ending.
Room? Something subtle, light and airy. Wrought iron four poster bed with scroll work and perhaps a Cupid crowning the head board (sexeh cupid, not cherub-eque). A few pieces of traditional black and red pottery, maybe a small marble statuette or two. Chaise lounge. A table with a mosaic depicting the story on top. Pale blue and white color scheme.

Leah & Strike room (from Jessica Andersen’s Nightkeepers). Decorating should be easy, just use what modern furniture you like, with Mayan accents. Well, maybe a bit more than accents, but you get my drift.
ms bookjunkie said on 04.20.09 at 10:52 AM • [comment link]
And then there’s the Lina & Hades room (from P.C. Cast’s Goddess of Spring), with a classical Greek feel - in dark tones though—Hades is Lord of the Underworld after all—with light/bright accents since Lina brightens up his life.

Then there’s the pink ruffled splendor of the Sunshine & Talon room (from Sherrilyn Kenyon’s Night Embrace) that hmm… might need some of accent of Talon’s love for fast, muscular rides and a hint of the bayou. No pet alligator, please.

I’m not trying to get the prizes, but I am throwing in my vote for the Vane and Wimsey room. I think an art deco theme would be fab, and there are some classic scents that would go with it. Think of Chanel No 5, for example (jasmine, neroli, ylang ylang notes), which was released in the mid-20s.
MillyG said on 04.20.09 at 11:59 AM • [comment link]
Merry & Devon from The Windflower. I’m going with a nautical theme for the decor - oak paneled snug ship’s cabin, complete with captain’s bunk with rock & roll motion at touch of button! In contrast the bathroom would be a tropical paradise. Trying to work out where the pet pig would fit into the theme!!!

Lt Howard “six-pack” Paxton and his new bride, Kat from Jo Davis’ Trial By Fire.
The room would have to have a hot-tub (goes without saying for these two!) and if you’ve read the story, you’ll know why and if not, your loss!! LOL Oh, my.
A fireman’s pole, cause it can be used for other things besides slidding down. And a big king-sized bed. Cause it will be needed.

I pick Harry and Emma from Laura Lee Guhrke’s “And Then He Kissed Her”.
Since Harry is a publisher and Emma a writer, the room would have to have one of those old style writing desks, with the little door that rolls up to uncover where one keeps paper and envelopes, inkpot and quill, that sort of thing (I know there is a particular name for it, but it escapes me at the moment). The room could inspire those staying in it to write a little romance while enjoying their own…

I’d name the room HAROLD & MAUDE. I just love this film although it has a tragic ending.
I’d decorate it with lots of magical items, like her caravan, so the guests would have something to explore.
Emperor Franz Josef I and Empress Elisabeth (Sissi) would also be good. He was Austrian emperor from 1848 - 1916 and King of Hungary 1867 - 1916.
his lovestory with Sissi is well known, not only because of the film-trilogy with Romy Schneider.
this time period in Europe was very opulent and romantic. it was also the time, when all the famous valse composers lived.

Ok, call me a geek but my couple have to be Clark Kent/Superman and Lois Lane. I just love this couple. *sigh* He’s the most honorable men ever written and he’s head over feet in love with Lois. They rule in every media - movies, tv shows and comics.
Anyway, their room would be furnished using a modern theme. Superman articles written by LL would be hung up (or maybe not, would that be too suspicious?) Light and airy.

It may seem strange, but I’m going to go for Mia and Michael from the Princess Diaries. Why not pay homage to a young couple, who have riveted teenagers (and adults) with their journey for all these years.
For decorative standards, and since Mia is a princess but a down to earth princess, I would use luscious satins around the room, but clean cut. The colour of the walls would have to be something that reflects the young nature of the couple, perhaps a subtle white. On each wall, there could be printed pictures of loved TV shows, films, books and music memorabilia. A cinematic wide-screen to watch their favourite films and TV shows, and the seating arrangement modern but comfy. Nothing too fancy, but a room that celebrates young life.

Ron and Hermione.
So the room would, of course, be painted a completely garish orange, horribly contrasting with Ron’s lovely ginger hair, but displaying his undying loyalty for the Chudley Cannons. Ron painted it this color when Hermione was off researching the psychological benefits of certain colors to develop a “potential paint color” plan. When Hermione returned from the library to the pumpkin-colored room, her bright-red face ALSO clashed terribly with the wall color.
So they stood there, arguing. Both of their faces flushed unnatural red colors and Hermione’s hair stood on end from the sheer insensitivity of Ron’s actions.
Ahhh, it must be true love when the color of the room named after the two of you makes you both look like the freaky, scary clowns that inhabit a room at my local haunted house. Except, you know, minus chainsaws and blood spatter. FOR NOW.
The room also has floor-to-ceiling bookshelves on three walls. (CAN YOU IMAGINE?!) All the better to learn things, my dear.

The Agnes and Shane suite!
From Agnes and the Hitman by Cruise and Mayer.

Wow. So much fun. And I would like to add even more love for both “An Old Fashioned Girl” and “Bet Me”.
My suggestion?
The Nick and Nora Charles room. Filled with retro-noir furnishings, bookcases full of mysteries to read, and a well-stocked liquor cabinet hidden behind one of the bookcases. (they were originally written during Prohibition). Gramophone, awesome clothes, and fantastic hats included.
Also, it comes with “Asta” a dog you get to borrow for your stay.

Hmm. Toss up between Jo March and Professor Bhaer and Emma and Knightley.
I think I’ll have to go with Jo and the Professor. I know everyone loves Laurie but even at a young age I always thought Laurie was lame and I far preferred the older Professor (beginnings of a father figure kink of angsty hotness (tm not me)? Who knows) so I quite rejoiced when Jo and the Professor got married (hmm, I need to reread Little Women).
The room I imagine would have a cherry wood bed with matching armoire and vanity table set. There would be an overstuffed armchair in the corner with a matching ottoman with dark green and tan striped upholstery. The curtains would be green to match the chair and the covers on the bed. There would be a wall covered in bookshelves, obviously and a writing desk as well (to save space one could always substitute a lap desk). And just for kicks perhaps a stand in the corner with an old-fashioned wash basin on it. You could even modernize and make it a functioning sink.

Han Solo and Princess Leia
The theme of the room could be space. Stars on the ceiling, the feeling of going through hyper space on the walls. The window could have the Millenium Falcon window look. The bed could be one of those space age beds.

OK, I have to go wake my kids up, and I want to think of my own idea, but before I do, and as I wipe up the milk I just spewed with the mention of Big Blue… This room would have to have some sort of alcove or window seat, or, I don’t know how you do it, but it MUST have a place where you can you can sit and with your S.O. and at the right time stretch up and accidently bump the lights and sirens in the police cruiser. Please, lights and sirens, please! (maybe just a lights option for us shy girls…)

Let’s see…
I’d go for a Sam and Jaine room from Mr. Perfect by Linda Howard. It would be decorated in deep candy-apple red walls. Pictures of large trucks and speedy cards would decorate the walls. The huge bed would be in the shape of a vintage Mustang.
Then there’s…
The Peabody and McNab room. Decorated in the garish colours of Ian’s clothing with a state-of-the-are computer system mixed with the earthiness of Delia’s free-ager upbringing: goddess statues, mother earth paintings, etc.
Next would have to be…
Mackenzie and Violet from Joey W. Hill’s Natural Law. This room comes complete with extra large bed, discreet St. Andrew’s Cross and a leather-covered bench for all your spanking needs. Want a little silence during sessions? We have ball gags in all sizes! Exhibitionist? One wall is completely glass so on-lookers may enjoy your flogging technique.

Delaney and Nick from There Goes the Bride. It would be decorated in a Tuscan theme (like Nick convinced Delaney to use in his grandmother’s house) all colorful and no white walls. It would have a cd player in the room with The Cars CD in it so you could hear “Shake it Up” (read the book to understand if you haven’t) :)

How awesome it is that the Inn BoonsBoro has the Nick and Nora Charles room? Props to the Inn.
My nomination: Odysseus and Penelope from ‘The Odyssey’ by Homer. Considering what they went through, they truly deserve a room of their own to enjoy their HEA. The colours of the room would be white (dominant), blue, green and occasional gold. Some Greek-style vases, frames, and a lot of white materials.
I’m not that keen on the film, but there’s no denying that Johnny & Baby from ‘Dirty Dancing’ are one of iconic romantic couples of the 1980s. (Get well soon, Patrick Swayne!) The room could be lightly decorated with some early 1960s-era pieces, similar to a hotel room in the film.

I’d love to see a Bridget & Mark (Jones & Darcy, respectively) room. The room & furniture would be slick and sober (just like Mark) but there would be clutter on all available surfaces and enough floor space for clothes to be discarded as will (lust?) dictates it (in a very Bridget manner).

Johnny Cash and June Carter - Chic rustic with distressed wood (oak finish), stylish exotic animal print, and buttery leather accents.
Odysseus and Penelope - wooden canopy bed with white diaphanous curtains, delicate framed mirrors to give the space an airy feel. Perhaps some white marble, and lots of clean lines.
Rhett and Scarlet - lots of antiquated brass-and-cherrywood furnishing, rich gem-tone velvet, and lush patterned linens.

I have to go with the Robert and Elizabeth Browning Room
I was thinking of the Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love Room - it could be all trashed and have wall to wall speakers - and for those of you thinking it wasn’t a HEA - it certainly was for Kurt - he got away from Courtney. Then again the same decor could be applied to a Sid and Nancy Room - but that would have to have strange medical paraphernalia around that might not go over well with the health inspectors.
So my choice would have to be Robert and Elizabeth Browning Room - poetry, an overbearing father, overcoming the obstacles - what a romance.
Decor - subdued Victorian furnishings with a fainting couch in one corner that is set up as a library filled with books of poetry. Fireplace is not an option.

Anna and Rupert from Eva Ibbotson’s The Secret Countess/Countess Below Stairs
Decorwise, inter-war stately home. Light blue silk wallpaper, antique mirrors, bowls full of roses and furniture that has stood the test of time. Dogs not only allowed but mandatory for that true English aristocracy experience and a large portion of the room to be a dancefloor to allow you to dance the night away to the strains of your gramaphone records.
No actual running water (think slightly run down stately home) but a bell pull to summon a maid to lug in water for your bath or dispose of the contents of the chamber pot.
A large bookcase of treatises on how to clean silver correctly and get a proper shine in your cut crystal. Absolutely no tomes on eugenics.

Right, I want to change my Supes/Lois room. I would decorate it in the Superman colours - red and blue. Very bold. The walls would be decorated with iconic images of the couple from the comics and movies. From the tv series, too. It would be great if you could get some Lois Lane articles about Superman from the movies/shows and display them. The room would be a true celebration of one of the most romantic couples in comics, spanning over 70 years. Clois rules!

I think Zarek and Astrid from Sherrilyn Kenyon’s Dance with the Devil would make a great addition to the Inn. Zarek was born a slave and never learned to read or write, and Astrid saved his soul from loneliness. Disfigured and banished, Zarek trusted no one, and no one trusted him. Astrid, rendered blind by the gods, was sent to judge him. She wasn’t able to see him with her eyes, but her heart saw the man he was underneath the hurt and betrayal.
The room would focus on a beautiful hand carved bed, covered in luxuriant pillows in blue and green jewel tones. The warm hardwood floors would have rugs scattered throughout, and would need a few carved figurines for Astrid’s hands explore. It would need a large writing desk to accommodate Zarek’s desire to learn to read and write, and a bookshelf filled with the classics for him to look forward to.
A large couch would hold lovers for hours of cuddling up together by the fireplace and reading together. The walls would be a soft cream to showcase the wood furniture and brilliants blues and greens, and artwork would be provided by local artists. Zarek anonymously gives to charities and carves toys for children, so having local artists provide the artwork would be perfect for his suite.

I’m not very good with the whole decor ideas, but the room could be made to look like a cabin. Instead of lights there would be candles. The bathroom could look like an outhouse and there could be a big washtub for a bath.

It could include paintings on the walls to look like all the animals featured in the book, such as Tater and Sinjin. I can also picture a cage in the room with a robotic tiger inside. There could be a whip hanging on the wall and maybe a tightrope.

Oh! I know! A little old school, perhaps - but the Alex and Rane Falconer room from the Swan trilogy! I’d totally stay in that one. And by that, I mean I’d move in and be impossible to remove.
The overall theme naturally, would have to be ships, swans and horses. With a bit of Southern or English charm to it. So I’m thinking gigantic wooden bed with a carved scene of Wild Swan at the top, and the horses running at the bottom. Perhaps a painting of the Liza Gwen up on the wall for Rane’s ship.
As I said, it’d be a bit old-timey. So maybe a clawed-foot bathtub in the bathroom, phone designed to look old, maybe like the sort that went up on the wall - probably a fully functioning modern phone hidden in there though. Safety and ease and all that. And there would absolutely have to be something that would be in the shape of swans that when put together, could interlock to form a heart - I’m thinking bookends or vases.
It would be a fairly simple room other than that, refreshing spring colors offset with dark woods. Very little metal or plastic in the room, it should have an airy feel to it that encourages staying in bed and snuggling.

The decor would be Colonial American with a large, curtained bed to shut out the rest of the world. A copy of The Letters of John and Abigail Adams should certainly rest on the bedside table (absolutely worth reading, fascinating and sweet). Oh, and a nice oak desk stocked with parchment, quills, and ink should you be inspired by this awesome couple.

Since Kathleen sold children’s books,a few illustrations from kid friendly classics could be framed as art for the walls and with Joe being a dog lover,a cozy green pillow in the right spot would be great. Also, fresh daisies are a must, due to their being the friendliest flower.

here are a couple.
The Peter Pan and Wendy room: canopy bed with leaves and such, light green room, pirate treasure maps on the walls, and the ceiling is shimmery with pixie dust. and maybe an “Indian Brave’ to help out in the tub ;) heehee.
The Baucis and Philemon room: (cupid and psyche were taken and ovid is not the happiest text). marble floors and columns in the corners, pretty potted trees (not oaks though :S) incense, and a large goose feast.
The Jessie and Cian room (from Karen Marie Moning’s Spell of the Highlander): a very large mirror near the bed, which is sumptuous and large and covered with plaids. pretty dark wood furniture, better than airplane food, and a wardrobe full of tight jeans for Cian to try on ;)
The Clay and Elena room: (though not strictly romance, kelley armstrong dishes up some sexy characters). SPOILERSPOILER: and daycare service. SPOILERSPOILER
The Paul and Victoria room: I thought movies would count, so I added the couple from A Walk in the Clouds. large bed with antique white lace bedsheets, several bottles of wine, and carpet on the floor. also, a hotline to the jewelry store so Paul can get Victoria a real ring when he decides to marry her.
I think that’s it, can I add later? aww this is fun.

Rats. Holly Z beat me to Odysseus and Penelope. Bah.
Okay, fine.
Edward VIII (Prince Edward/Duke of Windsor) and Wallis Simpson
Romantic Deco furnishings, opulent finishes, flowing fabrics, a distinctly continental and dramatic flair.
What’s more romantic than a King who gives up his throne for love?

My pick would be Chloe and Dageus of Dark Highlander by Karen Marie Moning. There would be a gigantic bed equipped with scarfs of the softest silk on the bedposts. The setting and decorations would tell the story of the Scottish hills and the magic that can be found there. The lighting would be soft candlelight and there would also be screened off in the corner, a huge claw foot bath built to hold at least two to be filled with the warmest scented water, lilac or heather I think. Add various oils and lotions for massaging the aches and pains of pleasure away. Those MacKeltars boys are huge and magically gifted.

Robin and Maid Marian, although whether that has a happy ending depends on which version you read, I guess. Obvious woodsy and possibly medieval theme. Maybe a bed with a gauze canopy with leaves interspersed or something (what? I’m secretly still a ten-year-old girl). Maybe a golden arrow on the wall. Most of the decor should be naturey but the furniture would have a more medieval style.

Olivia Joules & Scott Rich (Helen Fielding’s Olivia Joules & the overactive imagination)
Decorated in a manner fitting for a seaside tropical escape, this seemingly innocent room is armed with hidden spy gadgets, small weapons in case of terrorist attack, scuba gear, and of course a little travel case is included that has all of Olivia’s travel survival tools + a copy of her rules for living.
Ready to go diving in the ocean? Wonderful! Just watch out for speed boats and that pesky Pierre…

How about an Oulander Jamie/Claire room? Please, please, please? The potential choices of color and design for tartan/plaid fabrics, delicate laces and rustic furniture are unlimited! The decor would be a combination of practical and feminine. Throw in a few doctor/warrior sentimental pieces of art/statue.

Right, so many of my favorite couples taken, must try something different…
The Miles and Ekaterin room, from the Vorkosigan series (we have so many Bujold couples already mentioned, I can’t believe this one was missed) Hand carved oak funiture, of course, and decorated with classic weaponry and red Barrayaran skellytums; but with the latest communication technology as well, and a monitor for the twins’ nursery. Plus, handicapped accessible!
Or (from my favorite new release) the Alfie and John room from Alex Beecroft’s FALSE COLORS. Hey, gay couples have disposable income too, and wouldn’t it be nice to have a romantic retreat that’s same-sex friendly? Beautiful Caribbean decor, with lots of tropical plants (and no slugs), rope slung bed with hand-embroidered coverings, gauzy sheer curtains… and a BIG bathtub.
(verification word: out97. Well, the year’s a little off…)

Is it cheating to go again? I don’t care.
Scheherazade and Shazzenan from the Thousand and One Nights. Okay, he did behead all those other chicks, but that was before he found twu wuv.
And of course, a room fit for a Sultan and Sultana, where decadence is a must. Rich, embroidered fabrics, gauze curtains, lots of pillows on the floor for lounging, and a copy of the Kama Sutra. (Girlfriend must have had more than stories to enchant the Sultan, although some of them are pretty racy!)

My choice would be Sarah Dearly and Thierry from Michelle Rowen’s Immortality Bites Series. The Sarah and Thierry room would have red velvet walls, a burgendy and white patterned plush carpet, a crystal chandelier to illuminate the room, a California King sized bed in the center of the room with fluffy pillows, red silk sheets, white rose petals covering the bed, and red and white roses on the nightstands on either side of the bed. On the night stand is some delicious B Positive Blood for our vampire couple and some hot fudge for some sexual fun. The walls are sound proof so noise is no issue. There’s a fireplace and a heart shaped jacuzzi to set the mood for true romance.

A Evelyn & Ann room would be a nice addition I guess (but then we would need a men’s room too, just can’t think of any romantic couples off the bat here).
Based on Evelyn Hall & Ann Childs from Jane Rule’s Desert of the Heart (the more likeable versions of the movie naturally, not the slightly psychotic book versions).
The decor would need to reflect both Ann’s Game of Chance character and Evelyn’s cooler, book educated personality.

How about Dean Robillard and Blue Bailey from SEP’s Natural Born Charmer? The bedroom would be set up just like the gypsy wagon they loved (except maybe a slightly higher ceiling!) and the attached bathroom could be done up in Blue’s Murals. There would be a beaver costume in the closet, of course! Southern cooking like I’ve only read about but never tasted would be served, of course. A family photo album would include rocker/groupie pics, as well as some candids of Dean at the beach, Dean and his dad working on porch, Dean sweaty after a football game… umm yeah, maybe I’m ok with just the photo album…)

Ayla and Jondalar by Jean M. Auel.
Lots of stone details, maybe a stone floor, marble table and some clay pots, to get some kind of modern cave feeling. A fireplace is a must, so you can smell the smoke if you want to. A hide or two for the bedding, and some art to resemble cave art. Neutral colors, and not too much decoration, Ayla likes it simple, not ornate.

I’d love to see a Rupert and Daphne room, from Loretta Chases’s Mr. Impossible.
It would be decorated as an Egyptian dahabeeyah, with low couches and lots of luxurious throw pillows. As homage to the scenes in the pyramids, perhaps even a fake sarcophagus? And because of the constant mention of delicious foodstuffs, there would certainly be a tray of Egyptian coffee and sweets on a low table.
There would also be books in many languages, lots of gauzy drapes, and a CD of traditional music.
Plus the scented bath products would be called “Goddess,” and they’d smell like incense, the way Daphne is described as smelling.
*Sigh* Although I suppose asking for a pet mongoose to be there might be taking matters a bit too far. . .

I would like to nominate Bella and Edward…..this is because they are the new “great” couple that has come from wonderful romance…...on to the decorations…...I would start with a full wall with nothing but windows (like edward’s room). Then I would have a strong bed (you know how those vampires are) and tons of beautiful lush ferns and ivy everywhere to give it a forest feel. The carpet would be a plush off white. The furniture would be black and modern (the way I picture the cullen’s house). There would be no kitchen (what would we need that for?)

Hades and Persephone
The underworld never looked so enticing and is inspired by the myth. You won’t need to traverse the Styx or worry about Cereberus to enjoy the rich, sensual atmosphere. A king-sized four poster bed, dark maple wood furniture, and a fireplace . . . you will think you’re in Mt. Olympus. The bathroom offers a whirlpool jacuzzi tub, a jet spray shower with six rotating heads, and a steam room with complimentary Pomegranate and Sandalwood scents that will make you want to stay much longer than planned.

Beatrice and Benedick, my all-time favourite Shakespeare couple (and maybe my favourite couple full stop). In keeping with their relationship, decor would probably be quite sharp and spiky…hmm, not so comfy. Paint the walls with stylized birds of one tongue and beasts of another, add a letter rack for those terrible love notes you didn’t mean to send, and a screen to hide behind when people are having conversations they want you to overhear.
I was going to suggest Willow and Tara from Buffy, because they have quite the sweetest relationship on TV, but of course that doesn’t end so happily. Could have been awesome though, with purple sparkly swirls of magic and red velvet curtains to symbolise….well, you know.

OK, now I need to do my add ons to other people’s awesome ideas!
Buffy/Spike - the room much come with collapsing walls so you could bang the house down around you.
Sophie and Phineus from Welcome to Temptation - must have a picture or mural of a view of the town INCLUDING the water tower. Yes, pictures showing the water tower as it has looked in all it’s different paint schemes. And the balcony/porch would be set up like an old dock. (but without the dead body)
Wrath and Beth need a spindly desk and chair, with a letter opener stabbed into the desk and chairs, please.
Han & Leia - However else you do this room, it *must* have costumes in the closet. Absolutely. From all three movies, please. I need the Jabba costume, the buns and gown from Ep IV, Han’s leather vest and blaster from Ep IV, too. And how about a scrapbook with pictures of them hanging out with Luke and Chewie?
Dirty Dancing - I suggest Johnny’s cabin instead of a hotel room. Slamming screen door out to the porch. Record player and plenty of room to dance.
Lloyd and Diane - Say Anything - the porch must include a car to stand on with a boom box to hold. And a guitar to play really, really bad songs with.
That’s all for now… but I’ll be thinking!

Introducing…
The Marty and Jennifer Room
There’s is a love that has stood the test of time! The focus of this Back to the Future-themed room will be the Dolorian bed, of course, which will vibrate pleasantly to the purr of 88 mph.
There will be plenty of alarm clocks on site, a nifty booby-trap contraption that will make you breaksfast and a sweet axe in the corner, in case you feel like wailing (to the absolute horror of the Lizzie and Mr. Darcy room next door.)
For a mere $50 extra, you have the option of letting Doc transport you to 1885, 1955, 1985 or 2005. Inn Boonsboro claims no responsibilty for those indviduals that fail to return the next morning at the 10am check-out.

Maurice Hall and Alec Scudder from E.M. Forster’s Maurice. One of the most romantic books and endings of all time, I think, and especially romantic because it was so absolutely unthinkable at the time because they are overcoming class differences AND the fact that they’re both men. The room would include rustic yet period accomodations befitting two men who run away into the wild forests of England to live unorthodoxly happily ever after as woodcutters. And also a fireplace for “sharing” in front of.
Seriously, I cannot recommend this book enough. Forster’s other books are much more Serious Literature but Maurice is a straight-up wish-fulfillment, happy-making romance and it makes me cry happy tears every time.

Wow, I have to admit that I really like some of these ideas—Beatrice and Benedick are great, but Shakespeare is already there. Ditto Jane Austen. Claire and Jamie Fraser are one of my favorite couples, and who doesn’t love Lord Peter Wimsey and Harriet Vane? I think a Nora Roberts couple would be great (in addition to the JD Robb pairing), but who could choose?
Of the real-life couples, I like John and Abigail Adams—I would go for comfy farmhouse furnishings, big four-poster bed with a featherbed and a beautiful quilted bedspread.
Probably not in the same league as the greats, but they are in my heart—Michael and Sydney from Wild At Heart. The décor should be inspired by the 1893 World’s Fair in Chicago and feature replica maps and souvenirs, including a program.

My pick is Vidal & Mary from Heyer’s Devil’s Cub. The room could be done in the Georgian/Regency period with maybe some touches of Paris. A big four-poster bed like the one Vidal recuperated in after his ‘injury.’ Man, I feel a re-read coming on.

I’d totally pick David Blaine and Abigail Stewart from Ginna Gray’s “Once in a Lifetime.” I loved that book. Their room would be a total luxury cabana with faded, dark wood floors with soft creamy sand colored walls. A wide, luxurious king sized bed in dark wood with thick, square posts. Gauzy white fabric would drape down from the ceiling, around the posts and down to the floor. All the furniture would match the bed with the colors coming rich fabrics, plants and pillows. The bathroom would be light and airy with a huge walk in shower and jacuzi tube.
The whole room would be an invitation to lounge in bed all day.

I don’t think anyone has nominated Prince Phillip and Princess Aurora. Yes, it’s a Disney movie but it was the first of many romantic stories I’ve come to love. I always liked them best, mainly because Phillip is the only “prince charmings” that had a personality.
I would scent the room with something similar to Bvlgari pour femme, and give the room a very ornate decor.

The Lessa and F’lar room—Celtic-medieval with dragon-themed arrases and perhaps a trompe-l’oeil painting of a window with a gold and bronze dragon peering in. The alarm clocks would be shaped like fire lizards.
Another Beauty & the Beast variation, from the 80s TV show—lovingly preserved but highly eclectic furnishings from all times and places, a soft percussion of steam-pipes, lighting kept at a soft golden glow.

Oh, I want an Adam & Amanda room! (Adam’s Rib)
It would obviously have to have a big bed in dark wood, striped curtains and an extra, narrow bed that only makes sense if you read the Hays Code.
Breakfast in bed would be mandatory. Newspapers w articles on murders that will eventually put a serious strain on your marriage are, however, optional. As is referring to your loved one as ‘pookie’.
The bathroom needs a massage table, though. And, just for the record, none of you can wear the pants.

(Yes, I’m obsessed with Morning Glory by LaVyrle Spencer, thanks for noticing)

Kathrine and John
One of the very first romances I ever read - though likely more true romantic fiction, it still has the HEA - is the true story of John of Gaunt, AKA John of Lancaster, and Kathrine Swynford. Their love story plays out against the historical backdrop the Hundreds Year war, the reign of Edward III and the Regency of Richard II. John’s long lime affair with Kathrine and the many progeny (last name Beaufort), were a scandal - but it was all topped off when John, technically heir to the throne as long as Richard remained childless, petitioned the king to marry Kathrine, a commoner, late in their lives. His request is granted and John and Kathrine marry at last and legitimized their children by royal and papal decree. (If memory serves, he had to agree to surrender any claim to the throne to get the permission, making his son Henry, cousin to Richard II the heir apparent.)
The character of John is an old man in Shakespeare’s Richard II when he gives the famous soliloquy:
This royal throne of kings, this sceptred isle,
This earth of majesty, this seat of Mars,
This other Eden, demi-paradise,
This fortress built by Nature for herself
Against infection and the hand of war,
This happy breed of men, this little world,
This precious stone set in the silver sea,
Which serves it in the office of a wall
Or as a moat defensive to a house,
Against the envy of less happier lands,—
This blessed plot, this earth, this realm, this England.
The book, by Anya Seton, is brilliant and the love affair one of the most famous in history. John’s love of Kathrine lasted decades and she stayed with him all through his second marriage knowing, as a commoner, she was not eligible to marry him, yet hurt by his marriage. Seton did a fabulous job on these historical figures. Her research was impeccable.
(PS - He’s loved by the Tudors as their rather tenuous claim to the throne was based on being descended from John.)

There have been some excellent suggestions so far.
I wanted to add one of my own, tho I admit the name doesn’t sound overly lyrical. From one of the romantic biographies I read as a child— Mrs Mike.
Katherine and Mike’s room would have to be a warm, rustic wilderness cabin decor, suitable for withstanding the coldest of Canadian winters—with a roaring fire in the fireplace and a bearskin rug, and a big feather bed covered with lots of pillows and quilts and pelts. An inviting room— a place of shelter, comfort, and love that overcomes all hardships. The artwork would range from delicate needlepoints to native weavings, and have the occasional Mountie-type stuff scattered about as well—perhaps some snowshoes and other paraphernalia hanging by the door.
Diane :o)
“Don’t waste ‘em, Kitten” still makes me smile and sigh

When I was in sixth grade, my class read Redwall by Brian Jaques. The hero is Matthias Mouse, who falls in love with a girl mouse named Cornflower. Therefore, I would like to nominate the Matthias and Cornflower room. It should look like a little room in the roots of a tree. Colors would be subdued and foresty, with touches of cornflowers—embroidered on the bedspread and pillows. A canopied bed with embroidered curtains and acorns carved on the tops of the bedposts (and on other pieces of furniture.) Everything should be cushy and soft and should looked well-loved and well-used.

Heavens, what an enormous list!
Roderick Alleyn and Agatha Troy (Ngaio Marsh): 1930s-50s decor; visual references to his sleuthing and her art.
Any one of several Heyer couples would work (with a Georgian or Regency visual theme), but particularly Venetia and Damerel, I think.
Lucy and Max (Mary Stewart, This Rough Magic) - decor based on the intense colours and distinctive landscapes/seascapes of Corfu. Actually several other Mary Stewart couples would work well, too, with the many memorable settings and locations she used.

Going with the BDB theme, I would nominate Vishous and Jane’s apartment hideaway. It might have to be in a more “sehcluded” area of the Inn though!
Another suggestion would be Isadora Peabody and Ryan Calhoun from Charm School by Susan Wiggs. Of course, the room will be pirate ship themed.

If we’re talking old-school movie couples, I have to go with Peter (Clark Gable) and Ellie (Claudette Colbert) from It Happened One Night, quite possibly the best romantic comedy ever made. The decor is simple—two twin beds with the Wall of Jericho down the middle, plus one of those things that makes two twin beds into a king when the Wall comes tumblin’ down. Trumpet optional.

The Rachel and Houston Room from Dinah McCall’s Touchstone. The room would have a very simple, rustic look. Brass bad with a wedding ring quilt done in shades of blue and light green, and two tables and a dresser hand carved out of oak (for strength). Hard wood floors with light colored floral patterns to protect them, and a quilt stand in the corner. The bathroom would be very old school…low lighting, claw foot tub with no shower, pedestal sink with a small oval mirror.

If the room has a view, though, I think it’s pretty obvious that it will have to be the
George & Lucy Room (E.M Forster’s A Room With A View).
It should be light and airy and anything adding a touch of Italy would be a good idea. And Oh Mio Bambino Caro would most likely be playing in the background at some point. I suppose a barley field wouldn’t fit?

ARGH! Too many comments! Cannot read them all just now to see if somebody else already suggested it, so forgive me if I’m repeating someone.
Samuel & Leda from Kinsale’s Shadow & the Star. With a sleek and delectable combination of Victorian and Japanese decorating. Green & pink, with cherry blossoms? Decorating’s not my strong point, sorry.
But I do want ALL those books, which is unusual for me lately. Hormones or something, but books just are mostly disappointment me over the past month or so. Or maybe I just need to get my taxes done…

Yay! I skimmed through all the couples and didn’t see Valancy and Barney from The Blue Castle by L. M. Montgomery. Their room would be a peaceful room that has huge windows overlooking the water. The bathroom medicine cabinet would have a secret stash of Redfern’s Bitters. There would be a door that opens onto a mysterious room-a library full of John Foster’s nature books.
If that couple is not very widely known, you could always have an Anne and Gilbert Blythe room. ;)

It may be corny, but I have to suggest the following: The Mary and George Bailey room, from “It’s a Wonderful Life”. After all, Mary told George she’d love him till the day she died.
The room would have a big, comfortable iron bed with simple bedding—after all, they were rich in love, weren’t they? A copy of “Huckleberry Finn” would be on the nightstand. “George Lassos the Moon” would be on the wall. Every day would be Christmas with a decorated tree, complete with the bell to ring so another angel gets his wings.
It’s my favorite movie. Plus, I looked for a guy just like George Bailey. Then I married him.

How about Janet and Tam Lin? You would get to decorate it in old English/Scottish style, with fairies peeking out in places, and mix in some motifs of transformations and lions, snakes, thorns, and other manner of beasts. Then suit it up just a bit extra for expectant mothers, with proper pillows and some baby name and advice books. You could really pick which version of the story you liked best, although my favorite is The Perilous Gard.

Eowyn and Faramir from The Lord of the Rings - After pining away for a man she can never have, Eowyn, Shieldmaiden of Rohan, kills one of the most terrifying monsters in the land and realizes she that she is a kickass heroin in her own right, not to be identified by the men around her. Only then does the White Lady of Rohan find the man for her in Faramir, son of Denethor, Steward of Gondor. Brave and loyal Faramir, tested by the Ring, finds his reward not in his father or brother’s approval, but in a woman strong enough to be his partner.
The ample four postered bed is made of white wood, with stylized horses carved into both head and foot boards, and each post is carved with leaves and flowers to symbolize the White Tree. A dark blue starry mantle (which Faramir gave Eowyn when he declared his love) serves as comforter, and the room is painted in warm colours evocative of wild plains on which horses can be seen running.

ok one more (I think)
The Madeleine and Orry Room: this is from the tv miniseries north and south with Patrick Swayze (not the richard armitage one). it would be very antebellum south with lace and a large bed and stained glass windows reminiscent on the abandoned church. sumptuous with dark panelling and oriental rugs.
*said79* I’ve already said 79 things so I should stop commenting now.

Daemon Sadi and Janelle Angeline from Anne Bishop’s Black Jewels trilogy!
Colors: Black, black and black. (What else? Well, if you must, maybe a few touches of blood red and gold, just to bring out the blackness of the room)
A very large four-poster bed in the middle of the room, with a bedcovering delicately patterned with spiderwebs, and delicate, black bedcurtains made of a lacy material in spiderweb patterns.
And always a bottle of blood-red wine and two glasses available.

Tommy and Tuppence Beresford, from a whole series of Agatha Christies. Decorated a la 1930s Noire, with sheik modern flapper details!
I love them.

What about Cinderella and Prince Charming? You’d have to pick an era, as she’s been portrayed in so many, but a decent medieval (French) style would be lovely, with velvet hangings on the beds and tapestries on the walls. Depending on the version you go for, glass slippers are optional. Or, same era, but with fewer trademark infringements, Rapunzel and her prince.
Or a fifties themed room with Lucy and Ricky, complete with a massive cabinet tv like my grandparents still have (with a built-in record player) and similar decor. Of course, the twin beds might be a bit of a stumbling block, but it’s worth considering. Maybe go the fifties route, but use Danny and Sandy from Grease. Or Rizzo and Kenickie - but the bed would have to be a stylized back seat of a car.

Ive got two, since someone already picked Sadi and Janelle
Im going to go with Chaz and Sully from gaberial’s ghost, Lillian sinclair.
Im thinking modern and old school mixed, chrome silver, Cruise ship style large oak dresser and desk. with a telescope to see Chaz’s poor little P40.
and my other one is Dante and Jafe from Lilli Saintcrow’s series.
I just see large and luxirus for everything. Oversized pillows and beds. with Fresh Fruit, bread and cheese tray.. Just a luxury that Dante never got.

I know it isn’t really a romance, but I’m going with Cimorene and Mendanbar from Searching for Dragons. I know they eventually spend several years apart as Daystar grows up, but they get together again once the spell’s undone!
And the room should have stone walls, like the castle, and green tones to echo the Enchanted Forest. And a rug with pink teddy bears. And a gargoyle in the corner.
Or, not in a book (well, technically in a comic book now), Zoey and Wash from Firefly. They were so mismatched and so wonderful together. And Joss has said that they were the only couple he would never break up. I assume their room would look something like the glimpses of their room on Serenity.

Loved the books and the suggestions. I am thrilled to see other fans of An Old Fashioned Girl, an old favorite. Devil’s Cub is a favorite book so I am thrilled to see it represented. So is the Peabody series by Elizabeth Peters. Also, Katherine by anya Seton was so romantic.
My own suggestion is Winter and Alex from Shadows of the Moon by M.M. Kaye

I want a Samwise Gamgee and Rosie Cotton suite. It would look like Peter Jackson’s Bag End set in LOTR: Fellowship of the Ring where Bilbo and then Frodo lived. (In the books Samwise inherits it and lives Happily Ever After with Rosie.)

To the Classical suggestions (Cupid & Psyche, Persephone & Hades), I would add Daphnis & Chloe, one of the oldest romance novels around. The story has an idyllic, pastoral setting, but there are also abductions by pirates, and the god Eros plays a major role. I see lots of Greek statuary, particularly of shepherds and shepherdesses, like the main characters.
What about a Wesley and Buttercup room? But I suggest leaving out the Rodents of Unusual Size!

I might be breaking the rules here, since this is from a series that isn’t actually finished yet - but I’ll still go with Cassie and Pritkin (Karen Chance), because I just finished the latest installment, and I’m seriously rooting for Pritkin.

Melanie Monroe & Jack Sheridan from Robyn Carr’s Virgin River.
It would be a very rustic room (think Jack’s Bar) with a riverstone fireplace, but would have all the personal comforts you would expect in an inn.

I vote for Lady & The Tramp. I think it’s a perfect foil to to the rest of the rooms.

A Sunshine and Constantine kitchen, from Robin McKinley’s Sunshine, with loads and loads of counters and storage space and a huge baking oven—windows on three sides and enough room for them to be together the whole time.
A Melanthe and Ruk bedroom, with a giant dragon mural and green dragonflies on pale linen. Should have a nice desk for business, and drapes on the bed. Also, a falcon post.

The Tracy and Hepburn room.
The decor possibilities are endless. You could to old Hollywood glam or anything from their movies. An African Queen room with a 4 poster bed draped with gauzy mosquito netting.

I see someone already said Howl and Sophie from Howl’s Moving Castle, but honestly, I wouldn’t want to live in their house. It would be a little chaotic. I was thinking of another pair of Diana Wynne Jones characters: Christopher and Millie Chant. The walls would be made of stone, since they live in Chrestomanci Castle, and there would probably be a huge fireplace and a four-poster canopy bed. To be honest that’s about as far as my imagination goes - I had a better idea percolating for Miles and Ekaterin, but someone beat me to it. I also want to second whoever said Dag and Fawn.

I love reading these!
My suggestion is a Buttercup and Wesley room, with the main feature being a huge and wonderful bed (the bed in my mind is Min’s from Bet Me—intricate brass with lavender/blue silky fabric bedspread, although in my mind I see it as a duvet cover so you have the fluffiness to fall back on) and a sign on the wall, saying “As You Wish…” with many toys in the nighstands so it can be any way the occupants wish.

I pick Esmond and Leila from Captives of the Night by Loretta Chase. The room will be decorated with much silk and pillows to get the effect of a harem.

I didn’t have time to read all these great suggestions, so if mine mirrors somone else’s I’m sorry!
There are SO many to choose from! The one that popped at first was-
The Merlin & Ransom Suite: Picture the room decorated in a shabby-chic/romantic style. Soft woods and iron scroll-work. Some simple ruffles on the bed and windows-earth tones for her (wild country estate) and iron for his more traditional estate…Wallpaper in sepia or earth tones, with images of fantastic inventions, flying machine blue prints and old world globes. The bathroom should be done in wood and copper, with a big huge copper tub for two. And of course a stuffed hedghog! It should be on the ground floor, since Ransom’s affraid of heights…

If no one’s said this before - an Eliza Doolittle and Henry Higgins room from the movie My Fair Lady (please disregard Pygmalion since we’re doing the happy endings thing) ...
The room could have tons of flowers in flower baskets, lots of wood panelling and that recording equipment from the movie that Eliza talks into.

Okay…my choice is going to be a Phedre and Jocelin from Kushiel’s series by Jaqueline Carey. The rooms would be done in sangoire (deepest red alls) with a dark wood bed that has spindles (all the better to tie you with). The bed would also (every night) be covered with white sheets and long stemed heavily scented red roses that still have the thorns on them.
If you have not read this set I suggest running to your nearest book store and picking them up. High fantasy/alternate history at its best…and an impossible star crossed love that you never think will ork out but does…

I thought of another one….how about the Burns and Allen room honoring George Burns and Gracie Allen? Theirs was a true-life love story that endured the test of time and pressures of Hollywood. When he died at age 100, George was buried with Gracie and had her headstone changed to “Gracie Allen & George Burns—Together Again.” He wanted her to have top billing. The decor could be anything vaudvillian or include some of their show memorabilia.

Holy cow there are a lot of ideas here. As I was scanning through I saw Min & Cal, my first pick, Shane & Agnes, my second pick, Ranger & Stephanie, didn’t think of them until I saw them and a couple of picks from SEP. SO, I went a different direction.
Annie Graves & Tom Booker from The Horse Whisperer by Nicholas Evans The room would be decorated with oak furniture and a large handmade quilt would cover the bed. Pictures of horses and Montana views would adorn the walls, while magazine racks filled with New York publications and a state of the art computer sat in a corner on a small dining room type table with a dining room chair.
Bea said on 04.20.09 at 11:13 PM • [comment link]
Jamie and Elizabeth from Lynn Kurland’s A Dance through Time. The room style would be (comfortably updated) 13th century Scottish castle.

Wow this is a great contest. Best of luck to all.
Now me I am a nut for a good paranormal romance. At the moment I am reading Katie MacAlister’s Aisling Grey Series. A great romance with a realistic tension between Aisling and Drake. Since Drake is a wyvern of the green dragon sept the colors of the room must be green. (You know dragons, they take everything so literal.) I was thinking lush emerald green covers over darker green sheets on a mahogany sleigh bed. Soft golden walls with a crisp white molding.
