First, Jennifer Crusie asked me a set of questions that were as challenging as Jane’s, and the interview that resulted is up on ArghInk.

I am also over at BookPage answering questions about the genre, about EIKAL, and which type of romance I’d most like to find myself in. (HOUSE PARTY, Y’ALL. HOUSE PARTY!)

And if the samples provided online aren’t enough, you can read an extended excerpt of the chapter about (ahem) sex over at Kirkus today!

ETA: Linda Holmes over at NPR’s Monkey See pop culture blog also examined EIKAL and how it works, and proposes that she herself write a book that hands down I would buy in a heartbeat.

I actually shuddered before I understood what you meant by BDB sandwich. I think that series is the second most rapey literary work I’ve read.

The title is actually true for me. I was a very, very late bloomer and when I eventually had my first kiss at 29, I do think the confidence to take the plunge came in part from the many tales of shy, inexperienced or hurt women in Romancelandia who dare to go out there and, timidly or bodly, try for what they dream of, even if it might not work out. Although a couple of glasses of wine may have played a not insignificant role.

As well as this, the physical mechanics of the kiss - and it was a good one, mmmm… *ahem* - were informed by romance novels. I think one historical was particularly informative on this point, though sadly I cannot recall the author’s name.

And when it became clear that though this man was right-for-now he was not Mr Right, all those smart, sassy women of Romancelandia helped me read the signs and wind things up, not beat myself up when I lapsed now and again into what-ifs and silliness (and here Jill Mansell gets a big shout-out), and to understand that I am normal, this is normal; that I am writing my own life on who I am - and that it’s good.

So I’ll happily raise a glass to the good ship Romance.

There is nothing so hilarious to me as the ridiculous BDB spelling. A friend and I read a few of them at the same time and amused ourselves by coming up with faux-BDB names, like RHUDE and SURHLY.
