55. In Australia with Destiny Romance

G'day from Australia! Sarah is down under and had a chat with Sarah Fairhall and Carol George from Destiny Romance, the digital first imprint of Penguin Australia. We talked about how it started, what authors they're excited about – and the first romances they read, because romance editors love romance, too. Plus we talk about that feeling you get when you're having a good time while reading a book.

Here are some of the books we discuss during this podcast:

Book The Quiet Gentleman Book Regency Buck Book Untamed - Anna Cowan

Book Lord of Scoundrels Book Devils' Cub Book These Old Shades

Book The Devil's Delilah Book The Time Traveler's Wife Book Venetia - Georgette Heyer

Book Devil's Bride - Stephanie Laurens Book Iron Duke Book The Perfect Rake - Anne Gracie

Book A Letter From a Rake

Book My Cowboy Heart InterMix, our podcast sponsor, would like you to know about MY COWBOY HEART, a hot new romance about life on a ranch, by Z.A. Maxfield.

This is a contemporary romance between a ranch foreman and a new ranch hand from a well established voice in male romance.

J-Bar foreman Jefe Malloy pretty much keeps to himself—slinking around the edges of ranch life like an old coyote, doing his job and staying private. That is until Crispin Carrasco shows up. Lean, muscular, and with a motor mouth that won’t quit, Crispin sparks something in Jefe—something the foreman didn’t know was there.

But how does a lone coyote approach the warmth of a fire? And more important, what would happen if that fire burned?

  1. Great podcast. Have fun in Australia

  2. Alex says:

I’ve been reading a lot of Destiny Romance books (I love that you can get them here via kindle with no fuss at all, as a long time fan of aussie authors this is definitely a plus) they are pretty good, well, some I really like some not so much but they are always a good time.

Also, thanks for the whole size tutorial, I have lots of books from there and I was wondering why they never fit with the UK or US ones.

    Anyway, loved the interview!!!

  3. SB Sarah says:

@Alex: one of the things that was asked about a LOT at Romance Writers of Australia is whether American readers are interested in Australian-set romances. I am, and it sounds like you are, too. Glad you liked the podcast interview!

  4. Michelle C. says:

@Sarah Count that as 3 of us interested. Yes, I’m definitely interested.

  5. Hannah says:

Great podcast! I also enjoy reading Antipodean-set romance novels. Harlequin has always published quite a few of them. I’ve read a couple of titles from Destiny courtesy of Netgalley and noticed, for any other Netgalley reviewers, the titles one of the editors mentioned (Playing by the Rules and Spotlight on Love) are available to read now.

  6. Emily A. says:

If more Americans could get seven weeks vacation time, we would have more of a travel culture. Seven weeks! Most Americans are lucky to get three weeks off. It’s like maternity leave!  Have fun in Autralia!

  7. Thanks for the fabulous interview about Destiny. Carol and Sarah are wonderful editors and an absolute pleasure to work with.

It was great meeting you in WA and I look forward to seeing you at the Brisbane Writers Festival.

  8. Imelda Evans says:

Ooh, Carol called my book fun and witty and a warm comfy blankie!  Thanks for this great podcast, Sarah and can I say, your Australian accent was bonza.  So much so, I was confused at first! I thought I’d hit the wrong button for a minute.

As Jen said, Carol and Sarah are great to work with.  I’m very proud to be a Destineer and it’s lovely to see our still very new imprint featured on your wonderful blog.

  9. Michelle Helliwell says:

Great podcast as always. And thanks for the recommendations, I have more books to check out.

I’m happy to read books set in many places – Australia being one of them (hell, I’d love to read more Canadian set romances too…). So to all of those Aussie writers there (or New Zealanders, or whomever), give me a story from your part of the world. For me it’s the strength of the writing and the characters that draw me in.  I recently watched “District 9” – a sci-fi film set in Johannesburg, and it was good in many ways, and one of them was just the flavour of a different location and the subtle and not-so-subtle differences in culture that influenced the story.

Anyway, great podcast – and kudos to the folks at Destiny Romance for their venture. That was crazy brave and I wish you all the best.

  10. I loved the podcast. It was so great to hear Sarah and Carol talk about the books they love and see where they’re coming from. As a new Destiny author, I found it fascinating. It was great to meet you at the conference in Freemantle, Sarah and lovely to hear you try out our Aussie accent again (you’re getting better at it!)
Great interview. Can’t wait to hear more.

  11. Kat says:

I was shocked—shocked—to learn that so many romance readers haven’t read The Perfect Rake. The hero of that book is just fabulous. I’m intrigued by The Devil’s Delilah/em] and I’m going to buy it…with high expectations. 🙂
