111. An Interview with Courtney Milan: Law, Books, and Recommendations

Sarah interviews New York Times Bestselling author Courtney Milan in this episode. They talk about the lawsuit filed by Ellora's Cave against Jane Litte and Dear Author, about legal things in general, and why it's a bad idea to piss off lawyers and journalists. Plus, they have a really fascinating discussion thanks to some very smart questions asked by folks on Facebook.

A note: this podcast is being produced by Smart Bitches Trashy Books LLC, and not by To Be Read, LLC.

Here are the books discussed in this episode:

Bollywood Affair Theresa Romain - Season for Desire A Kiss for Midwinter

The Heiress Effect Almost a Scandal True Pretenses

For Love and Liberty - Alyssa Cole Reapers Stand

The Affair by Beth Kery This podcast is brought to you by InterMix, publisher of THE AFFAIR—the brand-new, red-hot e-serial from New York Times bestselling author Beth Kery.

A young woman’s quiet life is upended when she meets the man of her forbidden dreams in the startling new novel from New York Times bestselling author Beth Kery.

The Affair begins…

The Affair Week One Innocent yet unconventional hospice nurse Emma Shore has secured a new position at The Breakers, the sprawling mansion of enigmatic and dangerously handsome racecar billionaire Michael Montand.

Hired as caretaker for Montand’s stepmother, Emma expects few complications. But one night, lost in the mansion’s maze of corridors, she comes upon a woman and a man she can’t identify engaged in a raw, naked interlude of sexual subjugation. Silently, from the shadows, Emma watches—shocked, appalled, and unnervingly aroused.

But Emma wonders… if this mysterious stranger is not Montand, then who is it? And what other surprises are in store for her? Night after sleepless night, she’s considering the possibilities. And for the first time in her life, she’s not going to run away from them.

The music this week was provided by Sassy Outwater, and the track is called “Nyup” and it's by the Peatbog Faeries from their 2007 album What Men Deserve to Lose. You can find them at their website, or at iTunes.

I’m only 8 minutes in and you both have already made my day—hell, my entire weekend.

    Thank you.

  2. Danielle says:

Love this! Thanks for making the cut and paste exercise I’m doing at work this afternoon SO delightful.

  3. Liz says:

between this episode and the weekly sales emails i think i just dropped $20 at amazon. Please know I’M TOTALLY OK WITH THIS. Loved this episode, brilliant as usual and it was wonderful to hear Courtney Milan be so real and down to earth and awesome.

Thank you both, Sarah and Courtney. A most informative and enjoyable program. One has to wonder whether the EC suit is going to go anywhere given everything that has taken place since its filing. It may live on in continuance limbo after all.

Plus, I have to mention that I’m a recent discoverer of Courtney Milan’s excellent novels, glomming my way through with much glee. Thanks are due to Sarah for bringing them to my attention originally, and to Courtney for all the delight the books deliver.

  5. Carolyn says:

This is THE best podcast I’ve heard. Courtney is the bomb. And Sarah ain’t bad either.  😉

  6. Teev says:

Great podcast thank you for it!  I wrote down all the recs since the pictures of them never show up for me (everything else does, just not the “these are the books from the podcast” thing).

Courtney, if you like “girls dress up as guys” historicals I highly recommend Ridiculous by D. L. Carter which has a heroine who dresses as a guy for economic reasons, but it’s kind of a shlubby guy (cuz economics) but she is so funny and awesome that the ton embraces her anyway. Lots of times authors say the character is witty but it’s not really on the page but in this book it is.  Also you are awesome!

  7. Teev says:

Also, Courtney (if you indeed come here and read this), I love much about The Heiress Effect including Jane’s reads on Bradenton and Oliver but the whole Oliver stepped into the warm May sunshine chapter is one of the loveliest bits of prose I have ever read.  I still tear up and I have reread that particular bit many many times.

  8. SB Sarah says:

    Aw, thanks. 🙂

  9. […] that a lot of the virulence from the TwitNut stems from Ms Milan’s idea to start #notchilled, this really cool podcast with Sarah of the SmartBitches, and all the great, continued analysis of the legal shenanigans at […]
