376. A Conspiracy of Deadline Cakes: Live at Loyalty Books with Sherry Thomas!

Two live recordings, back to back! This week, I’m in conversation with Sherry Thomas, author of the Charlotte Holmes series. I recorded this on Friday, 25 October, 2019, at the Loyalty Bookstore in Washington DC. As usual, I had questions from my nosy brain and from the SBTB community – and in the middle we have crashing cups, a spontaneous reading from the author, and a special additional guest: audiobook narrator Kate Reading came to … Continue reading 376. The Magnolia Sword: A Ballad of Mulan by Sherry Thomas

The Magnolia Sword

Sherry Thomas is the rare writer that I’ll follow to any genre. I inhaled her gorgeous European historicals as a teen and reread them at least thrice a year (The Luckiest Lady in London remains in my list of Top 10 Favorite Romances of All Time). When she wrote YA fantasy in the Elemental Trilogy, I mourned the loss of her historicals but nonetheless gobbled up those new books as well. When she moved on … Continue reading The Magnolia Sword: A Ballad of Mulan by Sherry Thomas

The Hollow of Fear by Sherry Thomas

The Hollow of Fear

Oh, boy. This book wrecked me, from giving me twitchy tense reading in the beginning to requiring that I ignore everything around me and read in a parking lot so I could finish it at the end. First, yes, you should read the prior two books in the series, A Study in Scarlet Women , and A Conspiracy in Belgravia . It might be possible to drop into book three and follow the majority of the story, but the slow … Continue reading The Hollow of Fear by Sherry Thomas

Books on Sale: The Suffragette Scandal by Courtney Milan & More

RECOMMENDED: The Suffragette Scandal by Courtney Milan is 99c. Pretty much anyone I’ve heard talk about Milan’s books says, “Just read them all, trust me.” I concur.

Redheadedgirl and Carrie did a joint review of this title and they gave it an A:

Both Redheadedgirl and I give this book ALL THE A’s.  We laughed, we cried, we were inspired and frustrated.

I may have swooned a little.

Redheadedgirl spent her Friday emailing the other Smart Bitches reviewers and telling us “HURRY UP AND READ THE BOOK I NEED TO TALK TO YOU ABOUT IT”.

A Conspiracy in Belgravia by Sherry Thomas

A Conspiracy in Belgravia

I was so absorbed in this novel, I read it in one long, very lovely day, the kind of weekend day where you look back with a sort of awed gratitude that you spent most of the daylight hours reading happily. Everything that I found so enthralling about the first book in this series, A Study in Scarlet Women, I found here: layers of meaning, thoughtful scenes and pieces of dialogue, multi-faceted examinations of simple but … Continue reading A Conspiracy in Belgravia by Sherry Thomas

262. A Conspiracy in Belgravia: An Interview with Sherry Thomas

I interview Sherry Thomas about her upcoming book, A Conspiracy in Belgravia, the second book in her Charlotte Holmes series. We discuss where Ms. Holmes is going, how the cover art for this book changed, and we talk about what happens in the story – but don’t worry, there are no spoilers. We also discuss the world that’s been created around Charlotte, and we talk about Sherry’s theory as to why Sherlock Holmes is a … Continue reading 262.
