March by John Lewis

March: Book One

Over the weekend I binge-read March, the graphic novel (in three volumes) by Congressman John Lewis, Andrew Aydin, and Nate Powell. My advice is that you should absolutely read March but pace yourself. TW for racism and violence. March describes Representative Lewis’s years with the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC). It’s told as a series of flashbacks remembered on the day of Barack Obama’s inauguration and bookended by memories of Bloody Sunday — the day … Continue reading March by John Lewis

Guest Movie Review: Maudie

Maudie movie poster

NB: Sometimes you just need to work out your frustrations with writing an F-grade, and Rhode Red did just that! Not to be confused with RedHeadedGirl in Boston, Rhode is a redheaded feminist in Providence. She works in business (aka trade) publishing by day, reads romances and SFF by night, buys more art than her house can hold and grows vast quantities of flowers. “I’ve tried not to keep this film in my mind, and … Continue reading Guest Movie Review: Maudie

March: Book One

Congressman John Lewis (GA-5) is an American icon, one of the key figures of the civil rights movement. His commitment to justice and nonviolence has taken him from an Alabama sharecropper’s farm to the halls of Congress, from a segregated schoolroom to the 1963 March on Washington, and from receiving beatings from state troopers to receiving the Medal of Freedom from the first African-American president. Now, to share his remarkable story with new generations, Lewis … Continue reading March: Book One

Review: Sworn to Silence by Linda Castillo

Review: Sworn to Silence by Linda Castillo

Full disclosure: Sworn to Silence by Linda Castillo isn't so much a romantic suspense as it is a thriller with a romantic subplot. It was so deliciously good that I had to review it though. I purchased a copy of this book for my mom when I bought my copy. A day later she called me, letting me know she was behind on everything because she'd finished Sworn to Silence then immediately downloaded the next three … Continue reading Review: Sworn to Silence by Linda Castillo

It’s that time of year – when lights are on the houses, when the days are shorter, when the long, chilly nights are full of the promise that you get to read sex scenes out loud. Why? It’s time for the Literary Review’s Bad Sex Award . Oh, the things we have to be thankful for. A throbbing, turgid congratulations to Rachel Johnson’s Shire Hell.
