Any Way the Wind Blows is the conclusion of Rainbow Rowell’s amazing Simon Snow Trilogy. The story began as part of another book, Fangirl. Fangirl was a contemporary novel in which the main character wrote fan fiction about a franchise similar to the Harry Potter franchise, with courageous students at a magical school. Carry On gave us a different version of this same fanfic that stood on its own as a lovely and moving deconstruction … Continue reading Any Way the Wind Blows by Rainbow Rowell →
RECOMMENDED: Rosaline Palmer Takes the Cake by Alexis Hall is $2.99! Carrie and I jointly reviewed this one and agreed on a B+. As a bisexual woman, I definitely felt seen by this book and I’m here for all the 2021 summer baking romance reads.

A Desperate Fortune by Susanna Kearsley is $2.51 at Amazon and $2.99 elsewhere! Like Kearsley’s other books, it has strong romantic elements and dual timelines. Many readers loved Sara, a woman who’s been diagnosed with Asperger’s and takes a job as a codebreaker, but other readers found the book took a while to get going. Are you a Kearsley fan?

This is a joint review by Carrie and AJ. Wayward Son is the second book in a spinoff series — you might also want to check out Carrie’s review for the previous book, Carry On, and Sarah’s review for the book that started it all, Fangirl. Carrie: Wayward Son is the sequel to Carry On, by Rainbow Rowell. If you haven’t read Carry On yet, go do that. I’ll try to avoid spoilers for Carry On … Continue reading Wayward Son by Rainbow Rowell →
RECOMMENDED: All In by Simona Ahrnstedt is $1.99! Redheadedgirl gave the book an A:
I felt like this was full of Shakespearean drama, and scheming families, and hot sex, and gorgeous clothes, but also some important things to say about how the world is functioning. There’s a lot going on, though, and the ending a tad rushed.

I know I’m late to the party (again) but I finally read the first volume of Rainbow Rowell’s Runaways comic book series and I have to share the Squee! Volume #1: Find Your Way Home collects Issues #1-6 of Rowell’s run. I loved this comic when it first originated with Brian K. Vaughan as the writer. I followed his stories and the subsequent Joss Whedon run but stopped after the Whedon run concluded. I’m overjoyed that Rainbow … Continue reading Runaways, Vol. 1: Find Your Way Home by Rainbow Rowell and Kria Anka →
RECOMMENDED: The Spinster’s Guide to Scandalous Behavior by Jennifer McQuiston is $1.99! Thanks to Reader El El about the head’s up! Elyse reviewed this book and gave it a B:
It took me awhile to really get into The Spinster’s Guide to Scandalous Behavior by Jennifer McQuiston. I’m not sure if that was totally the fault of the book or the fact that my brain is exhausted from my day job and I’m slowly crawling out of a reading slump. The book is brimming with awesome feminism and a beta-hero I loved, but it felt a little like the beginning dragged.

I don’t know why I even bother reviewing Rainbow Rowell books. They always affect me the same way. The book is announced, I squee, I get the book, I jump around, I read the book, I cry lakes of tears. At this point Rowell could publish the phone book (remember phone books?) and my review would be, “This listing of names and numbers was so poignant, it really spoke to my soul, I cried a … Continue reading Carry On by Rainbow Rowell →
Rainbow Rowell is one of those authors who always seems to attack my emotions directly, when I’m not looking. I love her use of unconventional characters, and I love that even though the character’s lives are imperfect, they get to find love anyway. Landline is not Rainbow Rowell’s best book. But through a combination of skill and serendipity the book managed to turn me into a gibbering mess. I’m not sure I’d call it “good” … Continue reading Landline by Rainbow Rowell →
