242. Jennifer Lohmann: NoveList and Hosting a Romance Book Club

Sarah chats with librarian and romance author Jennifer Lohmann about her new job working on NoveList, and how to use it as a resource to find books to read. Many public libraries have access, and some include it in their catalogs, too – it’s a great tool for finding books to read. Then we talk about the romance book club that Jennifer has been running for many years, touching on selecting books that will create … Continue reading 242. The First Move by Jennifer Lohmann

The First Move by Jennifer Lohmann

The First Move is emotional, rich and difficult. It's also very good. The characters aren't thin or dispatches from Stock Characters R' Us. They are real people with real feelings – a LOT of feelings. Brimming with feels. Overflowing and making a mess, all these feels. They made my eyes sting — I had a lot of empathy for the heroine and she followed me around for days after I finished. Renia is the sister … Continue reading The First Move by Jennifer Lohmann

Reservations for Two for Pierogies! A Giveaway from Jennifer Lohmann

Featured image for Reservations for Two for Pierogies! A Giveaway from Jennifer Lohmann

Y'all remember Jennifer Lohmann, right? She's the 2010 RWA Librarian of the Year, and we had a Photoshop contest to celebrate, playing with the cover of Karina Bliss' What the Librarian Did. The entries were amazing, and the winner is still one of my favorite cover mockups ever. I've done two book events at the Durham County library branch where Jennifer works, and she's still hosting romance reading groups, and trying to reach more romance readers … Continue reading Reservations for Two for Pierogies! What the Librarian Won: A Photoshop Contest in Honor of Jennifer Lohmann

In 2009, I went to Durham, NC, for a Bosoms book event organized by Jennifer Lohmann of the Durham County Public Library. It was easily one of the best Bosoms events I attended – she worked with the local Barnes & Noble to host the event, and the local RWA chapter came out as well. Y’all. THERE was a LINE. The best part was meeting Jennifer. She spends much of her time building knowledge, education … Continue reading What the Librarian Won: A Photoshop Contest in Honor of Jennifer Lohmann

Librarians and Romance: An Interview with Jennifer Lohmann

Featured image for Librarians and Romance: An Interview with Jennifer Lohmann

When I went down to Durham, North Carolina, for a reading at the Barnes and Noble sponsored by the Durham County Library, I met the Librarian of Awesome, Jennifer Lohmann. She mentioned while we were having lunch that she often talks to libraries and library students about the romance genre – what romances are and what they’re not. I asked if she’d be willing to talk about her presentation and her experience as the Local … Continue reading Librarians and Romance: An Interview with Jennifer Lohmann

Unlocking Library Coolness: The Library of Things

Time for another edition of Unlocking Library Coolness, where I share neat-tastic things I’ve discovered about local libraries, beyond the inestimable excellence of All The Reading Materials. The look on my kids’ faces when I told them their library card allowed them to check out up to 50 books is still one of my favorite memories. In previous editions, we’ve covered Libby, language learning options, and then magazine options for digital browsing. Last month, I … Continue reading Unlocking Library Coolness: The Library of Things

Books On Sale

Recommendations for the Harlequin Sale, Anyone?

Books on Sale: Sex, Straight Up by Kathleen O'Reilly & More

Sex, Straight Up by Kathleen O’Reilly is one of the category romances I have recommended most frequently, especially when I need to change someone’s mind about the genre. I reviewed this book and gave it an A-, writing:

There are two things you need to know about this book: you like tortured, healing heroes who are genuinely good guys? Go find this book. O’Reilly’s mastery of the incredibly sexy, almost-three-dimensional man continues in this book.

Second, I was unfortunately predisposed to dislike it. I knew that Daniel is a widower whose wife died in the World Trade Center.

O’Reilly is a very, very talented writer, and I loved this book a LOT. And, with this big sale right now, it’s $1.99.

The “Rise” of A Reader-Inspired Hero – a Q&A with Karina Bliss

The “Rise” of A Reader-Inspired Hero – a Q&A with Karina Bliss

Karina Bliss’ series about rock star Freedman brothers has been a favorite around these parts for a long time.  Back in 2010, Karina Bliss’ What the Librarian Did inspired all sorts of Photoshop fun hereabouts to honor Jennifer Lohmann’s being awarded Librarian of the Year from RWA. Then, Bring Him Home, which was connected to the Freedman series, was a Sizzling Book Club Pick in 2012. And during the book club chat, many of us … Continue reading The “Rise” of A Reader-Inspired Hero – a Q&A with Karina Bliss

The Rec League: Characters and Therapy

The Rec League - heart shaped chocolate resting on the edge of a very old book

I received this email from Mara awhile back, and have been compiling a list to help her find the books she’s looking for. I’m hoping you have some suggestions: I’m not looking for any particular book this is more of a mini rant plus a distant hope that there might be books out there that would stave off this mini rant. I’ve been reading Maya Banks (specifically books 1 & 2 of the Surrender trilogy) … Continue reading The Rec League: Characters and Therapy
