  • The Murder of Mr. Wickham

The Murder of Mr. Wickham by Claudia Gray

The Murder of Mr. Wickham by Claudia Gray is $1.99! Thank you to everyone who let us know about this one! Sarah mentioned this one in a previous Hide Your Wallet and it definitely fits within the Bitchery’s interests.

From New York Times bestselling author Claudia Gray—a summer house party turns into a thrilling whodunit when Mr. Wickham, one of literature’s most notorious villains, meets a sudden and suspicious end in this brilliantly imagined mystery featuring Jane Austen’s leading literary characters.

The happily married Mr. Knightley and Emma are throwing a house party, bringing together distant relatives and new acquaintances—characters beloved by Jane Austen fans. Definitely not invited is Mr. Wickham, whose latest financial scheme has netted him an even broader array of enemies. As tempers flare and secrets are revealed, it’s clear that everyone would be happier if Mr. Wickham got his comeuppance. Yet they’re all shocked when Wickham turns up murdered—except, of course, for the killer hidden in their midst.

Nearly everyone at the house party is a suspect, so it falls to the party’s two youngest guests to solve the mystery: Juliet Tilney, the smart and resourceful daughter of Catherine and Henry, eager for adventure beyond Northanger Abbey; and Jonathan Darcy, the Darcys’ eldest son, whose adherence to propriety makes his father seem almost relaxed. In a tantalizing fusion of Austen and Christie, the unlikely pair must put aside their own poor first impressions and uncover the guilty party—before an innocent person is sentenced to hang.

  • The Duke with the Dragon Tattoo

The Duke with the Dragon Tattoo by Kerrigan Byrne

The Duke with the Dragon Tattoo by Kerrigan Byrne is $2.99! This is part of Byrne’s Victorian Rebels series. I’ve heard Byrne’s writing compared to modern Old Skool crazysauce and  I mostly agree with that assessment. Expect alpha heroes and outlandish plots.

The bravest of heroes. The brashest of rebels. The boldest of lovers. These are the men who risk their hearts and their souls—for the passionate women who dare to love them…

He is known only as The Rook. A man with no name, no past, no memories. He awakens in a mass grave, a magnificent dragon tattoo on his muscled forearm the sole clue to his mysterious origins. His only hope for survival—and salvation—lies in the deep, fiery eyes of the beautiful stranger who finds him. Who nurses him back to health. And who calms the restless demons in his soul…

    A LEGENDARY LOVE

Lorelei will never forget the night she rescued the broken dark angel in the woods, a devilishly handsome man who haunts her dreams to this day. Crippled as a child, she devoted herself to healing the poor tortured man. And when he left, he took a piece of her heart with him. Now, after all these years, The Rook has returned. Like a phantom, he sweeps back into her life and avenges those who wronged her. But can she trust a man who’s been branded a rebel, a thief, and a killer? And can she trust herself to resist him when he takes her in his arms?

  • Defy the Night

Defy the Night by Brigid Kemmerer

Defy the Night by Brigid Kemmerer is $2.99 and a Kindle Daily Deal! Kemmerer’s previous series was well-reviewed on the site and I mentioned this one in a previous Hide Your Wallet. The follow-up will be released in September.

King Harristan rules Kandala with an iron fist. He’s had to ever since he and his brother Prince Corrick inherited a kingdom on the verge of collapse after a deadly illness killed most of the population before a cure was found. The one thing keeping his people alive is also driving them apart . . . the cure, made from the nectar of a rare flower. As sickness lingers among the people of Kandala, a sharp divide has formed, as those who control access to the medicine live in luxury–while the rest live in suffering. The only way to keep the peace is to kill anyone who threatens it, and that task falls to young Prince Corrick.

Tessa Cade is a masked outlaw marked for death, but she likes it that way. At night, she and her best friend Weston Lark ride through the streets of the poorest towns, distributing food, money, and medicine they’ve stolen from the elite ruling class. Tessa has reason to hate the king: her parents were publicly executed after they were caught selling medicine on the black market. She has reason to love Weston: he saved her life when she nearly followed her parents to the same fate. She’s come to hate the dawn, which signals that it’s time for Weston to return to his home on the other side of the city, where he spends his days working in the grueling iron forge.

Lately, rumors have been spreading that the cure no longer works, and people are starting to act on their worst impulses. Tessa knows that the only way to save her people–the poor–is to assassinate King Harristan. It’s a mission that is more likely to kill her than save anyone, but if her parents were willing to risk their lives, then so is she. What Tessa doesn’t expect to find is that everything she believed about her kingdom is a lie, and that tipping the balance of power will require her to work with the very people she intended to destroy. . .

Set in a fantasy world startlingly similar to our own, Brigid Kemmerer’s newest series illuminates the divide between those with power and those without. . . and what happens when someone is brave enough to flip the system upside down.

  • Moonshadow

    Moonshadow by Thea Harrison

Moonshadow by Thea Harrison is FREE! This is the first book in the Moonshadow series. This book was mentioned in December 2016’s Hide Your Wallet. I bought this one and tried reading it, but I couldn’t seem to get into it.

Her past is a blank, her future uncertain….

Recovering from a shooting, LAPD witch consultant Sophie Ross leaves her job and travels to the U.K. to search for answers about her childhood. When she encounters a Daoine Sidhe knight of the Dark Court, she becomes entangled in an ancient hatred between two arcane forces.

He has given his body and soul to fight for his people….

Barred from his homeland along with his surviving brother knights, Nikolas Sevigny is embroiled in a conflict that threatens everything he holds dear. Only by uniting his people’s resources can they hope to prevail against Isabeau, the deadly Queen of the Light Court. He will do anything and use anyone to return home to Lyonesse.

When Nikolas encounters Sophie, he sees a tool to be used. The insouciant witch might be the key to unlocking every passageway that has been barred to the knights of the Dark Court, even as a fascination for her takes root in what’s left of his soul.

Sophie has no intention of becoming anyone’s pawn, yet the fierce Nikolas is so compelling, she can’t deny the temptation that endangers her guarded heart.

As magic threatens Lyonesse, Queen Isabeau unleashes her merciless Hounds, and Nikolas and Sophie become embroiled in a race for survival. Meanwhile, the passion that ignites between them burns too hot to be denied and quickly turns into obsession.

Thank goodness they both know better than to fall in love…

  1. DonnaMarie says:

Please do grab that Thea Harrison. It’s an offshoot of her Elder Races series. This is a great jump on point. She’s moved the action overseas, so you won’t have to worry about not knowing the backstory on a couple dozen existing characters (but honestly, you want to know those characters). On the other hand, no Pia & Dragos, so boo. Elder Races is in my ten paranormal romances for the depth of emotion and the excellent world building.

  2. Hannah Bloom says:

LICK by Kylie Scott, the first in the Stage Dive series, is $1.99 on Kindle

  3. Heather says:

Bea Koch’s Mad and Bad: Real Heroines of the Regency is a KDD today. Bea is one of the sisters who own The Ripped Bodice, the first (only?) romance bookstore in the US.

  4. Susanna says:

I think there are a couple of other romance bookstores in the US these days, though The Ripped Bodice was certainly the first.

  5. chacha1 says:

    @Heather thanks for that heads-up!

  6. Anne says:

I listened to The Murder of Mr. Wickham as an audiobook and enjoyed it immensely. It was fun to see all the Austen characters, a little light non-sexy romance, and a bit on the darker side with fairly thoughtful engagement on grief and disability.

  7. Moonshadow starts a little slowly, but I ended up loving it and have re-read it multiple times!

  8. Lauren says:

Another rec for The Murder of Mr. Wickham. I think the author did a good job of showing the personalities of each of Austen’s original characters. It was a fun visit!

  9. JenM says:

Moonshadow is one of my favorites after Dragon Bound. Sophie, the heroine, is 100% the “I will rescue myself thank you very much” type of heroine that I adore.

  10. denise says:

The Duke with the Dragon Tattoo is so good.

  11. Lisa F says:

I love how many P&P sequels feature terrible things happening to Wickham (As well they should!). Picking that up — I didn’t like the Byrne too much, tragically.

  12. Maureen says:

Thank you for the heads up on Moonshadow. I read it today and loved it. I belong to three libraries and weirdly, none of them have this series in their catalogs. I love it enough to buy the next one. Fingers crossed it’s as good as the first! This is a new to me author, so looking forward to reading her other books.
