  • Neon Gods

    Neon Gods by Katee Robert

Neon Gods by Katee Robert is $1.99! This is the first book in the Dark Olympus series. This is close to the top of my TBR pile and I’ve heard so many good things. A friend read it and wished it were spicier. Are you a fan?

He was supposed to be a myth.
But from the moment I crossed the River Styx and fell under his dark spell…
    …he was, quite simply, mine.

Society darling Persephone Dimitriou plans to flee the ultra-modern city of Olympus and start over far from the backstabbing politics of the Thirteen Houses. But all that’s ripped away when her mother ambushes her with an engagement to Zeus, the dangerous power behind their glittering city’s dark facade.

With no options left, Persephone flees to the forbidden undercity and makes a devil’s bargain with a man she once believed a myth…a man who awakens her to a world she never knew existed.

Hades has spent his life in the shadows, and he has no intention of stepping into the light. But when he finds that Persephone can offer a little slice of the revenge he’s spent years craving, it’s all the excuse he needs to help her—for a price. Yet every breathless night spent tangled together has given Hades a taste for Persephone, and he’ll go to war with Olympus itself to keep her close…

A modern retelling of Hades and Persephone that’s as sinful as it is sweet.

  • Someone to Hold

Someone to Hold by Mary Balogh

Someone to Hold by Mary Balogh is $1.99 and a Kindle Daily Deal! This is the second book in the Westcott series, which I know many of you love. We had some wonderful comments yesterday about Balogh’s comforting romance.

Humphrey Wescott, Earl of Riverdale, has died, leaving behind a fortune and a scandalous secret that will forever alter the lives of his family—sending one daughter on a journey of self-discovery…

With her parents’ marriage declared bigamous, Camille Westcott is now illegitimate and without a title. Looking to eschew the trappings of her old life, she leaves London to teach at the Bath orphanage where her newly discovered half-sister lived. But even as she settles in, she must sit for a portrait commissioned by her grandmother and endure an artist who riles her every nerve.

An art teacher at the orphanage that was once his home, Joel Cunningham has been hired to paint the portrait of the haughty new teacher. But as Camille poses for Joel, their mutual contempt soon turns to desire. And it is only the bond between them that will allow them to weather the rough storm that lies ahead…

  • Much Ado About You

Much Ado About You by Samantha Young

Much Ado About You by Samantha Young is $1.99! I feel like Young is an author that readers really like or don’t. Catherine read this one and wasn’t impressed. She gave it a C. Have you read this one? I’m tempted by the Great Dane.

The cozy comforts of an English village bookstore open up a world of new possibilities for Evie Starling in this charming new romantic comedy from New York Times bestselling author Samantha Young.

At thirty-three-years old Evangeline Starling’s life in Chicago is missing that special something. And when she’s passed over for promotion at work, Evie realizes she needs to make a change. Some time away to regain perspective might be just the thing. In a burst of impulsivity, she plans a holiday in a quaint English village. The holiday package comes with a temporary position at Much Ado About Books, the bookstore located beneath her rental apartment. There’s no better dream vacation for the bookish Evie, a life-long Shakespeare lover.

Not only is Evie swept up in running the delightful store as soon as she arrives, she’s drawn into the lives, loves and drama of the friendly villagers. Including Roane Robson, the charismatic and sexy farmer who tempts Evie every day with his friendly flirtations. Evie is determined to keep him at bay because a holiday romance can only end in heartbreak, right? But Evie can’t deny their connection and longs to trust in her handsome farmer that their whirlwind romance could turn in to the forever kind of love.

  • The Left-Handed Booksellers of London

The Left-Handed Booksellers of London by Garth Nix

The Left-Handed Booksellers of London by Garth Nix is $2.99! This is another Kindle Daily Deal and features magical booksellers. I know Nix’s YA fantasy novels have been a source for comfort for the Bitchery. This is the first in a series and it looks like book two is out next year.

A girl’s quest to find her father leads her to an extended family of magical fighting booksellers who police the mythical Old World of England when it intrudes on the modern world. From the bestselling master of teen fantasy, Garth Nix.

In a slightly alternate London in 1983, Susan Arkshaw is looking for her father, a man she has never met. Crime boss Frank Thringley might be able to help her, but Susan doesn’t get time to ask Frank any questions before he is turned to dust by the prick of a silver hatpin in the hands of the outrageously attractive Merlin.

Merlin is a young left-handed bookseller (one of the fighting ones), who with the right-handed booksellers (the intellectual ones), are an extended family of magical beings who police the mythic and legendary Old World when it intrudes on the modern world, in addition to running several bookshops.

Susan’s search for her father begins with her mother’s possibly misremembered or misspelt surnames, a reading room ticket, and a silver cigarette case engraved with something that might be a coat of arms.

Merlin has a quest of his own, to find the Old World entity who used ordinary criminals to kill his mother. As he and his sister, the right-handed bookseller Vivien, tread in the path of a botched or covered-up police investigation from years past, they find this quest strangely overlaps with Susan’s. Who or what was her father? Susan, Merlin, and Vivien must find out, as the Old World erupts dangerously into the New.

‘Much Ado About You’ – I’m tripping over the notion that a farmer has time to drop into the local bookstore every day to flirt with anyone.

I’m tripping over the notion that an English village has a bookshop.

  3. Lauren says:

I really enjoyed Neon Gods. Admittedly, I’m not into bdsm,so I skimmed those scenes and can’t really vouch for their spiciness level. But I enjoyed the story and the characters and I plan on reading the next book in the series.

  4. trefoil says:

I’m tempted by the Great Dane too but weirdly anxious about rescuing a dog in a country that you’re only planning to be in for a month.

  5. Midge says:

Another longtime Balogh fan here. Someone to Hold is not one of my super favourites, but it’s good. It also works for today’s Rec League – Joel is a painter.

  6. spinsterrevival says:

I really enjoyed Neon Gods as the world-building was amazing, although the kink in it of public sex wasn’t really my jam. I adored Electric Idol which was the next book (Eros/Psyche) and recently finished and enjoyed the newest one (blanking on title) about Helen/Achilles/Patroclus.

For the Balogh, I loved Someone to Hold because Camille is a fairly unlikeable person in the first Westcott, and so it’s great to see her go from that to slowly transform into an amazing version of herself with Joel (also it’s kind of fun to see her in the later books as Balogh has randomly turned her into a Regency-era Earth Mother figure).

  7. Anne with an E says:

Not to deter anyone from buying the Katee Robert book but as a bonus, you can listen to it all on audiobook for free on Spotify.

  8. Qualisign says:

A right-handed thumbs up for THE LEFT-HANDED BOOKSELLERS OF LONDON. Merlin’s fashion sense may have been the most compelling element of a really good YA book.

Related question: why do YA books, especially paranormals, tend to be so violent? And “sublimation, duh” is not a great answer.

… After a bit of thought, in a place where individual reproductive rights are anathema, apparently belonging to the state, and in a place where gun rights are viewed as inherent and inalienable, sublimation might just be the correct answer.

  9. lovesotterz says:

The Young is a good escapist read–I was able to suspend my disbelief. Trefoil, she just rescues the dog from peril–it has a person already!

  10. Deborah says:

There’s a multi-author compilation available for FREE on Amazon: Beach Reads Box Set: Volume 2.

    It includes:
BEARD IN HIDING by Penny Reid
    MR. MAYFAIR by Louise Bay
DEAR SEXY EX-BOYFRIEND by Lauren Blakely
THE YEAR WE FELL DOWN by Sarina Bowen
    BIG BEN by Nana Malone
BEAUTIFULLY BROKEN PIECES by Catherine Cowles
RETURN TO US by Corinne Michaels
    TATTERED by Devney Perry
    REPEAT by Kylie Scott
    SECURING PIPER by Susan Stoker

I’m hawking it for the Kylie Scott, which I think is her best. Even though I don’t like reading single files with multiple books in my kindle app. Very disorienting for location, searching, etc.

  11. Kareni says:

I was coming to post the same compilation, @Deborah, as it includes my favorite new adult romance — THE YEAR WE FELL DOWN by Sarina Bowen.

  12. Maureen says:

Count me in as another who likes the Neon Gods series. The third one is my favorite.

  13. Maureen says:

Wow! Thanks for the heads up on Beach Reads!!

  14. Kathleen says:

I DNFed Neon Gods. The writing felt like the first draft of a cool idea, but ultimately it just didn’t hang together. I wanted to like it though. Boo.

  15. Lisa F says:

I liked Neon Gods, didn’t like the sequel (it skipped major thematic notes I love in the myth). My pick here is the MB, though
