  • The Deadly Hours

The Deadly Hours by Susanna Kearsley

The Deadly Hours is $1.99! This is an interesting take on an anthology. You have four great historical mystery writers writing an interconnected story about a cursed gold watch. I’m super curious and Aarya mentioned it on a previous Hide Your Wallet.

A stellar line-up of historical mystery novelists weaves the tale of a priceless and cursed gold watch as it passes through time wreaking havoc from one owner to another. The characters are irrevocably linked by fate, each playing a key role in breaking the curse and destroying the watch once and for all.

From 1733 Italy to Edinburgh in 1831 to a series of chilling murders in 1870 London, and a lethal game of revenge decades later, the watch touches lives with misfortune, until it comes into the reach of one young woman who might be able to stop it for good.

  • The Arctic Fury

The Arctic Fury by Greer Macallister

RECOMMENDED: The Arctic Fury by Greer Macallister is $1.99! Carrie gave this historical mystery a B+.

I loved this book. It kept me in suspense and when it was over I wanted to read it again. It sent me down many Google rabbit holes, which is my favorite kind of book. I recommend this for people who aren’t averse to ambiguity, who like stories of adventure and exploration as well as intersectional examinations of women’s lives, and to people who like mystery/thrillers.

A dozen women join a secret 1850s Arctic expedition—and a sensational murder trial unfolds when some of them don’t come back.

Eccentric Lady Jane Franklin makes an outlandish offer to adventurer Virginia Reeve: take a dozen women, trek into the Arctic, and find her husband’s lost expedition. Four parties have failed to find him, and Lady Franklin wants a radical new approach: put the women in charge.

A year later, Virginia stands trial for murder. Survivors of the expedition willing to publicly support her sit in the front row. There are only five. What happened out there on the ice?

Set against the unforgiving backgdrop of one of the world’s most inhospitable locations, USA Today bestsellng author Greer Macallister uses the true story of Lady Jane Franklin’s tireless attempts to find her husband’s lost expedition as a jumping-off point to spin a tale of bravely, intrigue, perseverance and hope.

  • The 7 1/2 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle

The 7 1/2 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle by Stuart Turton

RECOMMENDED: The 7 1/2 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle by Stuart Turton is $1.99! I really liked this mystery. It’s a mix of a locked room murder mystery and Groundhog Day. Turton also has a new historical mystery that I’m very curious to read.

    THE SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLER.

“Gosford Park” meets “Groundhog Day” by way of Agatha Christie – the most inventive story you’ll read this year.

Tonight, Evelyn Hardcastle will be killed… again.

It is meant to be a celebration but it ends in tragedy. As fireworks explode overhead, Evelyn Hardcastle, the young and beautiful daughter of the house, is killed.

But Evelyn will not die just once. Until Aiden – one of the guests summoned to Blackheath for the party – can solve her murder, the day will repeat itself, over and over again. Every time ending with the fateful pistol shot.

The only way to break this cycle is to identify the killer. But each time the day begins again, Aiden wakes in the body of a different guest. And someone is determined to prevent him ever escaping Blackheath…

  • Cocaine Blues

    Cocaine Blues by Kerry Greenwood

Cocaine Blues by Kerry Greenwood is $1.99! This is book one in the Phryne Fisher Mysteries series. Elyse previously reviewed it and gave the book a B. In summary, she said that while the book was tons of fun to read, there were some things the TV show just did better, namely the costumes.

First in series from bestselling author, Kerry Greenwood

Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries, now streaming on Netflix, starring Essie Davis as the honourable Phryne Fisher

The London season is in full fling at the end of the 1920s, but the Honourable Phryne Fisher—she of the green-gray eyes, diamant garters, and outfits that should not be sprung suddenly on those of nervous dispositions—is rapidly tiring of the tedium of arranging flowers, making polite conversations with retired colonels, and dancing with weak-chinned men. Instead, Phryne decides it might be rather amusing to try her hand at being a lady detective in Melbourne, Australia.

Almost immediately from the time she books into the Windsor Hotel, Phryne is embroiled in mystery: poisoned wives, cocaine smuggling rings, corrupt cops, and communism—not to mention erotic encounters with the beautiful Russian dancer, Sasha de Lisse—until her adventure reaches its steamy end in the Turkish baths of Little Lonsdale Street.

The Deadly Hours reminds me of the series of books by “the Medieval Murderers.”

I highly recommend 7 1/2 deaths. The premise is unique, the characters are terrible people, and I was completely entertained.

Only about half of The Deadly Hours worked for me. I ended up skimming over the ALH chapters.

  4. Georgina says:

I didn’t enjoy The 7 1/2 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle. The idea is fantastic, but the story starts spinning its wheels after a while. It also has some of the worst fatphobia I’ve ever read. Just page after page about how disgusting a character is because he’s fat.

  5. Zuzus says:

I really enjoyed The Arctic Fury, which I read based on the review here. The imagery and bonds stuck with me. I’ve since recommended it to several adventurous women I know.

  6. FashionablyEvil says:

I thought THE DEADLY HOURS was a solid collection of stories. The Harris and the Trent were my favorites of the four.

  7. Jen M. says:

Georgina, same. The fatphobia in Evelyn Hardcastle was a LOT.
