Links: Romance, Pies, & Cows

Workspace with computer, journal, books, coffee, and glasses.Good afternoon! It’s almost turkey time and I can’t wait to eat my weight in carbs.

December is upon us and the site has many exciting things lined up! As usual, our holiday gift guide as started and we’ll be doing Hanukkah giveaways. I’m also starting to compile our Best Of content, if you’re at all curious what the Bitchery has loved this year.

We’re also doing our Best Books of 2020! (Which I think is something we haven’t done before, but also…what is time and memory at this point.) Stay tuned!

Huge congratulations to Romancing the Runoff! They raised almost $400k for voting organizations in Georgia. I have a feeling some extra donations will come in and put them over that amount. Did you win or bid on anything?

BookPage has listed their top ten romances of 2020 and 3 titles I reviewed over the course of the year for them made the list! Can you guess which three are mine?

Maggie was a previous guest on the podcast and Tara wrote a fantastic review of The Mermaid, the Witch, and the Sea! Come see her in conversation with Diana Pinguicha, as they talk about her queer YA fantasy debut. Diana has a preorder incentive going and promises an appearance by her cat Sushi during the event.

And, if you love holiday romances or the name Jenny, I’m moderating this panel for Belmont Books! We’ll be talking quaint British villages, smooching, and the appeal of snowy settings.

The concept of “pie crumbs” for a quick and easy shortcut to making pie crusts has been a topic of great conversation in the SBTB Slack! Have you heard of this baking hack before?

You may recognize a familiar face (It’s Sarah!) heading up The Washington Post‘s Best Romances of 2020!

Enjoy this moment of sheer cuteness.

Don’t forget to share what super cool things you’ve seen, read, or listened to this week! And if you have anything you think we’d like to post on a future Wednesday Links, send it my way!

Has everyone seen the drunk squirrel video?

    (hope I posted this right)

  2. Todd says:

Love the drunk squirrel! it’s not that uncommon – overripe fruit will ferment all on its own and the little critters will indulge. I saw a photo somewhere of a bunch of bears passed out from eating fermented windfall apples.

Pie crumbs! This is a technique I use all the time with my scone recipe. I combine the butter and dry ingredients, then freeze in a ziptop bag with the measurements for wet ingredients and baking info written on the bag. When I want homemade scones, I combine the scone mix with the liquid while the oven preheats. I can get them in the oven in about 5 minutes! I usually put a couple of batches of scone mix in the freezer at a time, and sometimes give it away as a gift.

Thank you for the pure cuteness. That Feel Good Page twitter is just what this day needed.

Guessed 1 of the 3 titles you reviewed (Take a Hint, Dani Brown) for BookPage.

I was looking for a fiction podcast that wasn’t dystopian mystery horror and found Kaleidotrope.
It’s a cute story about radio DJs at a school where the school legend is that everyone gets their HEA. It’s funny, it’s a little bit sappy, and I really enjoyed it.

  7. EC Spurlock says:

I was one of the winners in Romancing the Runoff! Most of the bids were way out of my league but I did manage to snag a submission package critique which is putting a whole new spin on a novel I’ve been marketing for some time. Thanks so much to all those who volunteered, donated, and lent their talents, and especially to Stacy Abrams, who continues to be the goddess we all need here in Georgia!

  8. Kareni says:

I’m amused by the inclusion of both cows and pies in this list!

  11. Maeve says:

I haven’t done pie crumbs, but I just made 6 mini apple pies using this link from the King Arthur site: https://www.kingarthurbaking.com/blog/2020/11/04/how-to-downsize-your-pies?page=0

    They are adorable.

  12. Antipodean Shenanigans says:

My bid on the set of Darlene Marshall’s pirate romances got sniped at the last minute
But the whole team behind Romancing the Runoff deserves major kudos.

  13. Carrie G says:

The items at Romancing the Runoff quickly exceeded my pocketbook, but that’s certainly isn’t a bad thing! I’ll give my donation through Act Blue instead. The auction was fun to follow!

  14. Karin says:

I was tracking several items at Romancing the Runoff that went way out of my price range, but I did grab a ‘buy it now” autographed book by Elizabeth Essex. Plus I gave them some money before the auction started.
