  • Hired

    Hired by Zoey Castile

Hired by Zoey Castile is $2.99! This is the second book in the Happy Endings series and I enjoyed this one! I actually think it might be my favorite book in the trilogy, as both the hero and heroine just genuinely love being around one another. My only complaint was that I felt the heroine’s relationship with her mother could have used more of a resolution.

For a man who makes his living pleasuring women, what happens when the only pay-out worth having is love?

Faith Abigail Charles has always done the right thing. So when her mother runs for mayor of New Orleans, Faith puts her law career on hold to help her win. But when tensions run high, Faith trades one kind of heat for another—in the arms of a hard-bodied stranger. He’s everything a woman dreams of in a lover. So much so that her one-night stand turns into two, then three, then four . . .

For Aiden Rios, meeting smart, sexy Faith feels like fate. After being ditched by his client in the Big Easy, the high-paid male escort needs a little company himself. Aiden knows he’ll have to come clean about his line of work, and he plans to—right after another taste of Faith’s sweetness—and another and another. . . . Until a chance meeting with his client leaves Aiden exposed—and Faith shocked and hurt. Now the hired hottie must show Faith that the love they share is bigger than the scandal threatening to destroy them . . .

  • Baron

    Baron by Joanna Shupe

Baron by Joanna Shupe is $1.99! This is the second book in the Knickerbocker Club series, which Redheadedgirl really enjoyed. Readers really liked the con artist heroine, but found that Baron wasn’t as good as the first book, MagnateThe third book, Mogul, is also $1.99.

New York City’s Gilded Age shines as bright as the power-wielding men of the Knickerbocker Club. And one pragmatic industrialist is about to learn that a man may make his own destiny, but love is a matter of fortune . . .

Born into one of New York’s most respected families, William Sloane is a railroad baron who has all the right friends in all the right places. But no matter how much success he achieves, he always wants more. Having secured his place atop the city’s highest echelons of society, he’s now setting his sights on a political run. Nothing can distract him from his next pursuit—except, perhaps, the enchanting con artist he never saw coming . . .

Ava Jones has eked out a living the only way she knows how. As “Madame Zolikoff,” she hoodwinks gullible audiences into believing she can communicate with the spirit world. But her carefully crafted persona is nearly destroyed when Will Sloane walks into her life—and lays bare her latest scheme. The charlatan is certain she can seduce the handsome millionaire into keeping her secret and using her skills for his campaign—unless he’s the one who’s already put a spell on her . . .

  • The Chocolate Thief

The Chocolate Thief by Laura Florand

The Chocolate Thief by Laura Florand is $2.99! This is the first book in the recommended Amour et Chocolat series and the other books are also on sale! Sarah has really enjoyed this series, but felt the first book was the weakest of the ones she’s read. What do you think?

    Paris
Breathtakingly beautiful, the City of Light seduces the senses, its cobbled streets thrumming with possibility. For American Cade Corey, it’s a dream come true, if only she can get one infuriating French chocolatier to sign on the dotted line…

    Chocolate
Melting, yielding yet firm, exotic, its secrets are intimately known to Sylvain Marquis. But turn them over to a brash American waving a fistful of dollars? Jamais. Not unless there’s something much more delectable on the table…

    Stolen Pleasure
Whether confections taken from a locked shop or kisses in the dark, is there anything sweeter?

  • Last Call at the Nightshade Lounge

Last Call at the Nightshade Lounge by Paul Krueger

Last Call at the Nightshade Lounge by Paul Krueger is $2.99! The premise of this urban fantasy sounds really cool where the characters battle demons with “magically-mixed cocktails.” Carrie read this one and while she loved the inclusive cast of characters, she thought it’d be a more exciting read.

Bailey Chen is fresh out of college with all the usual new-adult demons: no cash, no job offers, and an awkward relationship with Zane, the old friend she kinda-sorta hooked up with during high school.

But when Zane introduces Bailey to his monster-fighting bartender friends, her demons become a lot more literal. It turns out evil creatures stalk the city streets after hours, and they can only be hunted with the help of magically-mixed cocktails: vodka grants super-strength, whiskey offers the power of telekinesis, and tequila lets its drinker fire blasts of elemental energy. But will all of these powers be enough for Bailey to halt a mysterious rash of gruesome deaths? And what will she do when the safety of a “real world” job beckons?

This sharp and funny urban fantasy is perfect for fans of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World, and grown-up readers of Harry Potter. Includes 14 recipes from a book of ancient cocktail lore.

  1. Emily B says:

I enjoyed Hired more than the first in the Castile series. The writing just felt a bit tighter. Both Hired and Stripped are in KU. I keep waiting for the next in the series to hit KU (or for my library loan to finally come through) because while these books are enjoyable, they’re not worth $10.

  2. Mzcue says:

Laura Florand’s Amour et Chocolat series is delicious start to finish. I couldn’t choose a favorite but The Chocolate Thief is the one that got me hooked. It’s the favorite daughter of Hershey’s Chocolate versus France’s premier chocolatier. Lusty and sweet. I will say that like a box of chocolates, it’s hard with Florand’s series to stop with just one book.

  3. Laurel says:

I really wanted to like The Chocolate Thief but it was a DNF for me. I do not like characters who do bad things, and I just couldn’t get over the fact that the heroine was stealing. Your mileage may vary, but I wouldn’t recommend it.

  4. MsCellanie says:

The Amour et Chocolat series is not helped by binging. The individual books are fine, but when they’re read one after another, they’re a bit off. It’s story after story of an accomplished woman deciding that she wants to give up her ambition/career.

  5. genie says:

@laurel – I had the exact same thoughts on The Chocolate Thief. I finished it, but I was angry the whole time.

  6. trefoil says:

I read Last Call at the Nightshade Lounge after Carrie’s review and have to agree that it was less exciting than I had hoped. So much that I can’t remember the ending, just some of the scenes in the bar.

  7. Sydneysider says:

@genie and @laurel, Cade is my least favourite of the Florand heroines. If you can get past that, the book is entertaining and does make you want to eat chocolate.

I enjoyed Baron more than Magnate. I finished both, and liked the heroines in both, but the hero in Magnate is mostly assholish throughout. Mogul is also pretty good.

  8. Lisa F says:

The whole Castile series is pretty terrific; I gave Stripped an A.

  9. Emily says:

The Rose and Jasmine (and something about Oranges?) from Laura Florand were my favorites. I think they were a spin-off about perfumiers and were total escapism. One had almost no conflict and it was just what I wanted.
