Sarah’s in the Washington Post with a 2019 Best of Romance!

I was asked to write up a Best of 2019 Romance list for The Washington Post books section, and it’s live! Eeee!

Picking six was difficult – initially the total requested number was lower but I had to include a  book for as many different types of readers and fans as I could. Have a peek at the article to see the list!

But wait, this is the most exciting part:

Washington Post Best of Romance 2019 with a gorgeous embroidery art from Sarah K Benning featuring a couple on a sofa in a spot of light, the rest outlined against blue fabric background.

HOLY SMOKES! Would you check out that embroidery art for the image?!

I’m running out of font styles to convey my excitement. Look how gorgeous it is! As per the caption, the embroidered illustration was created by artist Sarah K. Benning, and you can follow her on Instagram and buy her work online, and order kits to make your own, too!

Thank you to Stephanie Merry at The Washington Post for as-always fabulous editing, and for asking me to be part of the end of year round up. Yay for more romance for everyone!

Wonderful! And I must say I got a bit misty-eyed thinking how disbelieving my early-twenties self would have been had I been told that, in 40-plus years, “serious” outlets like the Washington Post would be including romance novels in their Year’s Best round-ups.

  2. Terry says:

Damned shame, I don’t get to see it. I am not a WaPo subscriber and won’t unblock ads for their site. *shrug*

    Pretty embroidery, tho.

    @Terry: What you said.

I have three of the six books in my TBR pile, so I’ll look forward to reading them even more than I have been. I was a little surprised to see an absence of historicals. I’m more of a contemporary reader so it doesn’t disappoint me, just surprises.

  5. Darlynne says:

What a great article and list. Thank you for sharing the link.

I have a Post subscription (due to technical issues I can’t access the online article at this point) and they used to run a romance book review column once a month or so. They had a rotating schedule of genre books – mystery, sf and romance – and would review three or four books in each. I looked forward to those, since I like those genres. They’d also run columns for young readers and audiobooks, which they still run, but discontinued the genre columns. Most annoying.

Great selection, Sarah! I was pleased at the inclusion of a significant amount of neurodiversity.

(And also pleased that the WaPo got someone to do this who know her stuff… Remember that awful NYT article from a year or so ago that purported to be about the romance genre and sounded like the author’s knowledge had come from a quick conversation with someone’s mom about the romances she read in the 80s?)

  8. marjorie says:

    Well done, Sarah!

  9. Bea says:

Terry, hng23: Same here. Myabe if they’d learn to be less of a pain in the tuchus about the adsAdsAdsADSADSADSADSEVERYWHEREADS I consider unblocking them.
    Until then, WaPo can self-congratulate

  10. Lisa F says:

This is a darn good list!

I do subscribe to The Post and was able to get the full article! There was a great nod to Sarah and SBTB! Wow all the embroidery headings are amazing!

  12. Debbie says:

Hey can somebody just list out the titles for those of us locked out of the wapo site due to pay wall? I’d love to see what she recommends but not signing up to do so.
