  • Kings of the Wyld

Kings of the Wyld by Nicholas Eames

RECOMMENDED: Kings of the Wyld by Nicholas Eames is $2.99! This is a Kindle Daily Deal and is being price-matched. Queen Beverly Jenkins recommended this one on a previous podcast:

The book is amazing! It’s laugh-out-loud funny in some parts. The writing is wonderful.

Clay Cooper and his band were once the best of the best — the meanest, dirtiest, most feared crew of mercenaries this side of the Heartwyld.

Their glory days long past, the mercs have grown apart and grown old, fat, drunk – or a combination of the three. Then an ex-bandmate turns up at Clay’s door with a plea for help. His daughter Rose is trapped in a city besieged by an enemy one hundred thousand strong and hungry for blood. Rescuing Rose is the kind of mission that only the very brave or the very stupid would sign up for.

It’s time to get the band back together for one last tour across the Wyld.

  • Castles

    Castles by Julie Garwood

Castles by Julie Garwood is $1.99! This is part of the Crown’s Spies historical romance series and was originally released in 1993. I have a soft spot for Garwood’s writing and many readers say this one is their favorite of the series. However, given that it was published in the early nineties, I’m unsure how well it holds up.

Passion and danger abound in this classic historical romance from #1 New York Times bestselling author Julie Garwood.

Orphaned and besieged, Princess Alesandra knows that only a hasty marriage to an Englishman can protect her from the turmoil in her own land. The bold, raven-haired beauty instantly captivates London society, much to the amusement of her makeshift guardian, Colin, younger brother of the Marquess of Cainewood.

But when Alesandra is nearly abducted by her unscrupulous countrymen, Colin knows he must protect her and offers a marriage that should be in name alone—until their first kiss ignites a wildfire in his soul. As the lovely princess dashes headlong into unforseen dangers, Colin will risk his own life to save her and claim Alessandra as his own—forever…

  • Love at the Beach Shop

Love at the Beach Shop by Kyra Jacobs

Love at the Beach Shop by Kyra Jacobs is 99c! This is a small town, beachy romance with an older heroine and a fake relationship. The hero also has a huge crush on the heroine, who is his best friend’s older sister. Lots of catnip here! Readers say this one is super cute, but wanted more emotional depth.

The last thing Jenna Davis wants right now is more drama. Still reeling from the untimely loss of one of her four closest friends, she intends to bury herself in work and forget the hurt. But when her other friends announce they’re planning an extended stay on the island, Jenna needs to come up with a plan–and fast–to cover up the little white lie she’s been telling them.

Zach Taylor is dealing with a mess of his own. A sinkhole in front of his shop is keeping customers away and putting his livelihood in jeopardy. So when his best friend’s older sister—the one he’s been secretly crushing on since the day they met—offers to loan Zach some shop space if he’ll do her favor, he’s all ears. The request? Pretend to be her boyfriend until her friends head back home.

The stage is set, the charade about to begin. Can these two long time friends keep things purely platonic while they fool the others? Or will Zach and Jenna stop fooling themselves and finally let love in?

  • Taken by the Highlander

Taken by the Highlander by Julianne MacLean

Taken by the Highlander by Julianne MacLean is 99c at Amazon! It’s available elsewhere, but not at the 99c sale price. This is the last book in her Highlander series, and I believe it can be read on its own. However, if you have or do read the series in order, some felt this one wasn’t as enjoyable as the previous books.

    A WARRIOR WITH A SECRET

Logan MacDonald, fierce warrior and bold scout for Angus the Lion, hides a shameful secret. When he arrives, injured, at a crofter’s cottage in Campbell territory during a secret mission for his laird, he is immediately roped and bound….

    A WOMAN WITH A VISION

Mairi Campbell has dreamed of a powerful Highland warrior who will rise up to rescue her clan from oblivion and reclaim their castle from the English. When she stumbles across the mysterious wounded Highlander in a moonlit glen—a member of an enemy clan—she is strangely beguiled and cannot resist the desire to unearth the secrets of his darkened soul. Soon, Mairi surrenders to forbidden passion in his bed, which thrusts her into the middle of a war—in a battle for Scottish freedom, and in a battle against the true desires of her heart…

  1. Ren Benton says:

I have Kings of the Wyld (and the sequel, Bloody Rose) arriving today in paperback because I had to have them in my apocalypse library (books I want to be able to read when the grid goes down and I can’t recharge my ereader). “My broke ass bought this twice in multiple formats” is my highest endorsement.

  2. HeatherS says:

@ Ren Benton: Agreed. I have several books that fit the “multiple formats because I can’t have just one copy” bill for me (anything by Mary Renault and Madeline Miller, “Lord of Scoundrels”, Casey McQuiston’s “Red, White, and Royal Blue”).

Am I the only one who pets books I already own and adore when I see them on the shelf at a bookstore or library? Like, legit, it’s a thing I do. I know I can’t be alone in that.

  3. My SO absolutely loved KINGS OF THE WYLD. Basically, it’s an epic fantasy, D&D-type adventure where “bands” of mercenaries are akin to rock stars, complete with names, costumes, shows, and more.

  4. Heberta says:

“published in the earl nineties” is either the greatest pun or the greatest typo ever.

  5. DiscoDollyDeb says:

Right now, OFF THE EDGE by Carolyn Crane is free in the kindle store. It’s the second of the four books in her Undercover Associates series, but it can be read as a stand-alone. The hero is a linguist and the book has some interesting passages about how the words we use define us. The heroine is a singer working at a hotel in Bangkok, on the run from a dangerous ex. OFF THE EDGE, like the other books in the series, is romantic suspense and there is quite a lot of violence, but if you can look beyond that, it’s a propulsive story. Btw, for those who may not know, Carolyn Crane is an alternate pen name of Annika Martin—but OFF THE EDGE is nothing like Martin’s billionaire rom-coms, although equally well-written.

  6. JB says:

@Heberta I noticed that too and I was like “Ok, ppl should with character traits for the Earl of Nineties…wait, do other decades also get to be earls? Each one exemplifying the stereotypical traits of romance writing for that time?” Clever people could no doubt run with that and get a good meta/parody going…

  7. Emily B says:

MAJOR’s WELCOME HOME by Tessa Bailey is free right now. Sexy novella, virgin hero returning home from the military.

  8. Pre-Successful Indie says:

Just bought Kings of the Wyld, partly because it sounds **exactly** like my husband’s catnip. I don’t know whether I can nudge him to read it, but I will try. And enjoy it myself, no doubt.

  9. neh says:

I so enjoy reading all the comments-after every post. Thank you all commenters for your contributions to better my day. If you are thinking it -share it! “Like” you all!!

  10. JetGirl says:

Alesandra spelled with just one s? I can’t read that book, it would bug me, just as much as if it were Hether or Jeniffer or Ambar.

  11. Maureen says:

@HeatherS-Oh-the caressing of the books! I do it all the time, and I also do the thing where I have a book in my hand, turn to the person next to me (if there is one) and say “have you read this?? It is SOOOO good!”.

@RenBenton-I never thought about it as an apocalypse library-but I guess I do have that! Rosamunde Pilcher, Jane Austen, Elizabeth Gaskell, D.E. Stevenson-they are a few of the authors that I do have both ebooks and the physical books to get me through. I have TONS, and I do mean tons of actual weight-of books, we have a shed and the floor is bowing under the weight of my boxes of books. So if the apocalypse does come-I will say I will have plenty of books to re-read!

So some people may say book hoarder, and others may say prepared for eventual apocalypse 🙂 Can someone tell my husband I am just preparing for the future??

  12. Sandy says:

I’m an infrequent reader of e-books, so this might have been around for awhile, but I just stumbled on a deal on the KOBO store – 9 funny contemporary romances, For Free! https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/hilariously-ever-after

  13. SB Sarah says:

@Maureen, HeatherS: I have been known to pull my old favorites or a copy of my own books off of my shelf and, ahem, do exactly all of that. Which has to be in the top three most embarrassing things to say out loud. So, um, hi, can I join you?

  14. MaryK says:

I am definitely a paper book hoarder. The problem I’m having lately is that ever since I moved I can’t find anything. I’ve kept a good record of what books I have but can never seem to put my hands on the particular one I want. I usually end up borrowing the library ebook. So in an apocalypse I’ll have plenty to read, I’ll just be reading very randomly.

  15. Carla says:

I re-read “Castles” (for the umpteeth time) 2 years ago and loved it as much as when it was originally published. I SOOOOOOO wish Julie Garwood would go back to writing historicals.

  16. Trix says:

Kings of the Wyld is so damn fun (I always describe it as “Spinal Tap’s ‘Stonehenge’ in epic book form, and that’s high praise”), and amazingly feminist- and LGBT-friendly. (So is the sequel, Bloody Rose, although it’s more melancholy.)
