August’s New Releases

August is here! And if you’re in a warmer part of the world, it’s a great time to stay inside with A/C, a cool drink, and a good book. There are a lot of books I’m personally excited for this month, and Elyse and Sarah have some great picks too. But here are a few more titles releasing that you might want:

  • Ilona Andrews’ Kate Daniels series returns with Magic Triumphs! ( A | BN | K | G | AB )
  • City of Ghosts ( A | BN | K | G | AB ) is a foray into Middle Grade spookiness by Victoria Schwab.
  • From Here to You ( A | BN | K | G | AB ) begins a new series by Jamie McGuire.
  • Like thrillers? Check out Pieces of Her by Karin Slaughter ( A | BN | K | G | AB ).
  • The Governess Game by Tessa Dare ( A | BN | K | G | AB ) is out this month!
  • Laura Griffin starts a new romantic suspense series with Desperate Girls ( A | BN | K | G | AB ).
  • Is The Good Luck Charm by Helena Hunting ( A | BN | K | G | AB ) on your TBR pile?
  • Sherrilyn Kenyon is back with Stygian! ( A | BN | K | G | AB )
  • Jane Doe

Jane Doe by Victoria Helen Stone

    Author: Victoria Helen Stone
Released: August 1, 2018 by Lake Union Publishing
    Genre:

A double life with a single purpose: revenge.

Jane’s days at a Midwest insurance company are perfectly ordinary. She blends in well, unremarkably pretty in her floral-print dresses and extra efficient at her low-level job. She’s just the kind of woman middle manager Steven Hepsworth likes—meek, insecure, and willing to defer to a man. No one has any idea who Jane really is. Least of all Steven.

But plain Jane is hiding something. And Steven’s bringing out the worst in her.

Nothing can distract Jane from going straight for his heart: allowing herself to be seduced into Steven’s bed, to insinuate herself into his career and his family, and to expose all his dirty secrets. It’s time for Jane to dig out everything that matters to Steven. So she can take it all away.

Just as he did to her.

Sarah saysI have already read this, and have been telling people about it since I devoured it in one day. I might have to read it again. First person POV, and she’s a sociopath, and she’s getting revenge. I love it.

    Genre: ,
    Series: Mirage #1

In a star system dominated by the brutal Vathek empire, eighteen-year-old Amani is a dreamer. She dreams of what life was like before the occupation; she dreams of writing poetry like the old-world poems she adores; she dreams of receiving a sign from Dihya that one day, she, too, will have adventure, and travel beyond her isolated moon.

But when adventure comes for Amani, it is not what she expects: she is kidnapped by the regime and taken in secret to the royal palace, where she discovers that she is nearly identical to the cruel half-Vathek Princess Maram. The princess is so hated by her conquered people that she requires a body double, someone to appear in public as Maram, ready to die in her place.

As Amani is forced into her new role, she can’t help but enjoy the palace’s beauty—and her time with the princess’ fiancé, Idris. But the glitter of the royal court belies a world of violence and fear. If Amani ever wishes to see her family again, she must play the princess to perfection…because one wrong move could lead to her death.

  • Stripped

    Stripped by Zoey Castile

    Author: Zoey Castile
Released: August 28, 2018 by Kensington
    Genre: ,
    Series: Happy Endings #1

Skilled, sculpted, and sexy, the men of adult entertainment are the kind of guys a woman reserves for her fantasies not her reality. But is there more to these professional hotties than meets the eye? . . .

The day Robyn Flores meets Zac Fallon is one of those days. You know, when you’re already late for work. Mostly because you haven’t really slept since your best friend abandoned you for her fiancé and her exponentially better life. The kind of day you drag yourself to the cleaners to pick up your laundry, only to discover you’ve got the wrong bag—Star Spangled sequined thong, anyone? So Robyn is definitely not ready for the ridiculously gorgeous guy at her front door, except that they have each other’s clothes. But then, is any woman ever ready to meet the love of her life?

There’s just one problem: Zac Fallon is not the love of Robyn’s life. Zac knows, despite the
all-too-intimate dinner they share, he doesn’t have a shot at her. Because the next time Zac sees Robyn, he’s front and center of the male revue headlining her best friend’s bachelorette party. So much for wooing the pretty schoolteacher, much less her impressing her old-fashioned family, with his upstanding lifestyle. Now he’s only got one way to win his dream girl. It’s gonna be the steamiest, most irresistible seduction she’s ever seen. And this time it will be no act . . .

Amanda says: One of my most anticipated romances this year!

  • Toil & Trouble

Toil & Trouble by Jessica Spotswood

    Author: Jessica Spotswood
Released: August 28, 2018 by Harelquin Teen
    Genre: ,

A young adult fiction anthology of 15 stories featuring contemporary, historical, and futuristic stories featuring witchy heroines who are diverse in race, class, sexuality, religion, geography, and era.

Are you a good witch or a bad witch?

Glinda the Good Witch. Elphaba the Wicked Witch. Willow. Sabrina. Gemma Doyle. The Mayfair Witches. Ursula the Sea Witch. Morgan le Fey. The three weird sisters from Macbeth.

History tells us women accused of witchcraft were often outsiders: educated, independent, unmarried, unwilling to fall in line with traditional societal expectations.

    Bold. Powerful. Rebellious.

A bruja’s traditional love spell has unexpected results. A witch’s healing hands begin to take life instead of giving it when she ignores her attraction to a fellow witch. In a terrifying future, women are captured by a cabal of men crying witchcraft and the one true witch among them must fight to free them all. In a desolate past, three orphaned sisters prophesize for a murderous king. Somewhere in the present, a teen girl just wants to kiss a boy without causing a hurricane.

From good witches to bad witches, to witches who are a bit of both, this is an anthology of diverse witchy tales from a collection of diverse, feminist authors. The collective strength of women working together—magically or mundanely–has long frightened society, to the point that women’s rights are challenged, legislated against, and denied all over the world. Toil & Trouble delves deep into the truly diverse mythology of witchcraft from many cultures and feminist points of view, to create modern and unique tales of witchery that have yet to be explored.

Amanda says: Witches are my weakness.

  1. Dorothea says:

Oh dear. I clicked through the link to The Governess Game because sometimes I like Tessa Dare, but that cover…The hero looks like a vapid frat boy with a weirdly thin arm. A clever, perceptive, passionate woman will clearly be more than he bargained for or can possibly cope with. You can do better, girl!

  2. Susan says:

I’m glad to see Magic Triumphs at the top of the list, right where it belongs. 🙂 But Karin Slaughter? She’s on my Boycott ‘Til the End of Time list for committing murder.

  3. KateB says:

@Susan – Slaughter, really? Not Anne Perry? (who, by the by, is on my boycott list)

I’m sooooooo excited to read the new Susanna Kearsley! I can hardly wait.

  4. DiscoDollyDeb says:

I have to wait until the end of the month (August 28, iirc) for the second part of Skye Warren’s Trust Fund duet, THE EVOLUTION OF MAN. The first book, SURVIVAL OF THE RICHEST, was very good. Not quite as dark as some of Warren’s work, but with some very timely observations of how extremely rich men use their wealth to control their world—and, by extension, the women in it.

@Susan: I second KateB’s comment: are you sure you’re not thinking of Anne Perry? If you’ve ever seen “Heavenly Creatures” (which, To anyone who hasn’t, I strongly recommend), Anne is Juliet Holme. I’ve never heard anything about Karin Slaughter—although, if true, her last name is somewhat, um, unfortunate.

  5. Alexandra says:

Wait, Karin Slaughter committed murder? Does anyone have any links to articles or something?

  6. Carolyn says:

She killed off a main character and there was a huge upset. 🙂

  7. Bellwether and The Phantom Tree caught my interest. I have to admit that I’m a historical romance addict. So most books didn’t catch my interest.

  8. Crystal says:

I already have The Governess Game and Stripped preordered.

  9. Hera says:

I like what I’ve read of Jessica Spotswood’s work so far, and am interested in reading her previous anthology. Guess I’ll add this one to the list.

  10. DonnaMarie says:

That Nicola Cornick book? Oh yes, it shall be mine.

But mostly I’m happy to have Jane Doe sitting on the front seat of my car giving off that new books smell, and that I’ll be exchanging it next week for Maggie Hope Mystery #8, The Prisoner In The Castle. Maggie’s been imprisoned by her own government, & I hear that it has a bit of a Ten Little Indians vibe as she tries to figure out who is killing off her fellow inmates. Doesn’t sound like her romantic life will be picking up any time soon…

  11. Susan says:

Haha. No, Karin Slaughter committed literary, not actual, murder. RIP Jeffrey.

Other writers have been guilty of the same sin (yes, you, Elizabeth George) but Slaughter upset me more for some reason and I had to walk away. I just felt that the trust was irrevocably gone.

Although I don’t condone Anne Perry’s real life actions and was shocked when the story came out, I feel that she was a minor at the time of the crime, served her sentence, and moved forward. (I don’t recall, tho, if she’s publicly addressed her past or expressed remorse.) Other than becoming a successful author (albeit of murder mysteries), she’s lived a quiet life. I quit reading her books only because I started to get bored with them.

Sorry for the confusion caused by my flip remark!

  12. KateB says:

    @Susan – OHHHHHHH! *slaps forehead*

  13. Ellie says:

I won’t read Karin Slaughter anymore either. Not only did she ruin the storyline at the time, she made all rereads impossible. Too. Much.

  14. JoS says:

Wait. Victoria Helen Stone is Victoria Dahl? I am so getting Jane Doe!

  15. Read an arc of WILD HUNGER having not read the original series and really enjoyed it. I thought TOIL AND TROUBLE was overhyped. About to read STRIPPED after a friend of mine read an arc and sent it to me cuz she thought I’d love it- very hyped for it, because I saw the author at a signing and she was a damn delight

  16. Amanda says:

@Mara: I was very curious about reading Wild Hunger without finishing the previous series. Thanks for letting us know!

  17. kitkat9000 says:

@Ellie & Susan: I too stopped reading Slaughter but will admit (barely) managing to get 2-3 books past Jeffrey’s death.

What made me walk away was the idiotic, possibly sociopathic deputy who always made stupid choices and never learned from them regardless of consequences. IIRC, some, if not most, of her decisions were in direct violation of police regs.

    I *HATED* her.

  18. KB says:

I’m excited to read the new book from Kylie Scott, which is called “It Seemed Like A Good Idea at the Time.” It releases 8/7 and I will have it all queued up for our vacation which starts that following weekend. I LOVED her Stage Dive series and did not love her second series about the Dive Bar, so I’m not sure what to expect but I’m curious.

  19. Emily A says:

Alyssa Cole’s A Duke by Default came out on Tuesday. That makes it an August book, and I’m excited.

  20. […] releases: Tor.com (genre-benders, scifi, fantasy) and Smart Bitches […]
