  • The Changeling

    The Changeling by Victor LaValle

The Changeling by Victor LaValle is $1.99! This is a fantasy horror novel that has been recommended to me several times. Content warning, though, as it does deal with portrayals of mental illness and children in peril. Have you read this one? I think I might see if my local bookstore has this in stock!

One man’s thrilling journey through an enchanted world to find his wife, who has disappeared after seemingly committing an unforgiveable act of violence, from the award-winning author of the The Devil in Silver and Big Machine.

Apollo Kagwa has had strange dreams that have haunted him since childhood. An antiquarian book dealer with a business called Improbabilia, he is just beginning to settle into his new life as a committed and involved father, unlike his own father who abandoned him, when his wife Emma begins acting strange. Disconnected and uninterested in their new baby boy, Emma at first seems to be exhibiting all the signs of post-partum depression, but it quickly becomes clear that her troubles go far beyond that. Before Apollo can do anything to help, Emma commits a horrific act—beyond any parent’s comprehension—and vanishes, seemingly into thin air.

Thus begins Apollo’s odyssey through a world he only thought he understood to find a wife and child who are nothing like he’d imagined. His quest begins when he meets a mysterious stranger who claims to have information about Emma’s whereabouts. Apollo then begins a journey that takes him to a forgotten island in the East River of New York City, a graveyard full of secrets, a forest in Queens where immigrant legends still live, and finally back to a place he thought he had lost forever. This dizzying tale is ultimately a story about family and the unfathomable secrets of the people we love.

  • Tougher in Texas

Tougher in Texas by Kari Lynn Dell

Tougher in Texas by Kari Lynn Dell is $1.99! This is the third book in the Texas Rodeo series, though it can be read as a standalone. I’ve read the book before this one and I enjoyed Dell’s writing. She captures emotion really well, and I’m not usually a huge fan of cowboys!

    He’s got five rules
And she’s aiming to break them all

Rodeo producer Cole Jacobs has his hands full running Jacobs Livestock. He can’t afford to lose a single cowboy, so when cousin Violet offers to send along a more-than-capable replacement, he’s got no choice but to accept. He expects a grizzled Texas good ol’ boy.

    He gets Shawnee Pickett.

Wild and outspoken, ruthlessly self-reliant, Shawnee’s not looking for anything but a good time. It doesn’t matter how quickly the tall, dark and quiet cowboy gets under her skin—Cole Jacobs deserves something real, and Shawnee can’t promise him forever. Life’s got a way of kicking her in the teeth, and she’s got her bags packed before tragedy can knock her down. Too bad Cole’s not the type to give up when the going gets tough…

  • The Raven Prince

The Raven Prince by Elizabeth Hoyt

The Raven Prince by Elizabeth Hoyt is $1.99! This is the first book in the Princes historical romance series. This has been recommended in a Rec League for historical alpha heroes and another recommending gardening romances. According to Goodreads, I read this in 2011, but I remember nearly nothing about it.

There comes a time in a woman’s life when she must do the unthinkable – and find employment. For the widowed Anna Wren, that means taking a job as female secretary for the Earl of Swartingham.

Secretaries are always male – never female – as Anna well knows but the real downfall of her career is the realization that she is falling in love with Edward de Raaf – the Earl. But when she realizes that he is going to visit a brothel in London to take care of his ‘manly’ desires, Anna sees red – and decides to take advantage of the opportunity to also take care of her ‘womanly’ desires – with the Earl as her unknowing lover.

But the Earl has another reason for going to London. He is formalising his betrothal and trying (with little success) to forget about a secretary that has no right being female. Unhandsome, he knows that no woman wants him.

Except for the mysterious lady with whom he spent two unforgettable nights at Aphrodite’s Grotto, the most scandalous brothel in London. But when Anna’s plan is revealed, a bit of blackmail is thrown into the mix, a proposal is rejected and even the Earl himself will be unprepared for the intrigues that ensnare them.

  • Fake Bride Wanted

Fake Bride Wanted by Holly Rayner

Fake Bride Wanted by Holly Rayner is 99c at Amazon! This is a contemporary romance released last week and seems to be bursting with catnip. Royalty! Fake relationships! Characters with history! It has a 4.6-star rating on Goodreads and has really positive reviews.

Julian Meijer is a man who has everything—almost. A billionaire bachelor, and the youngest, hottest member of a long line of Dutch nobility, there’s just one thing that eludes him: the Meijer Ruby, a priceless family heirloom that’s been lost for generations. After a tip-off leads him to the vaults of an ancient bank, Julian thinks his quest for the ring is over, but a revelation stops him in his tracks: in order to inherit it, he must use it to propose to his future bride!

Shelby Bright has loved Julian since their schooldays together, but the two haven’t spoken in fifteen years. When a new job role lands her working at his company, she’s hoping only that he’ll remember who she is. Little does she know, he has much bigger plans in store for her!

It’s not long before Julian presents his offer: a sham marriage, in exchange for a cash sum large enough to change her life forever. Unable to resist the billionaire’s indecent proposal, Shelby finds herself falling head over heels for Julian all over again, even as it becomes clear that her old friend is not the sweet, kind boy she once fell for.

Can Shelby put her feelings aside for the sake of the deal? Will Julian ever realize that the true value of his quest, lies not in a priceless jewel, but in a very real, very fake fiancée?

  1. Liz says:

THE WOMAN IN THE WINDOW by AJ Finn is $3.99! If you think you can stomach another unreliable female narrator who drinks, can’t remember important dates, and may or may not have seen something that might have happened . . . maybe….

    I’m excited!

  2. jws says:

I loved the Raven Prince. This was my first Elizabeth Hoyt book and I have been a fan ever since. Edward is grumpy and not handsome due to smallpox scarring and I loved him. Anna is also fantastic, and not beautiful, and I highly recommend this book.

  3. Laura says:

I loved The Changeling! There were definitely parts that were hard to read, but it was really good. I think if you enjoy Neil Gaiman and/or Charles de Lint you’d like The Changeling too.

  4. JudyW says:

@jws. I second the love for the Elizabeth Hoyt historical. Loved this one and it was my first by her.

  5. hng23 says:

Thirding the Hoyt series (actually, anything by Elizabeth Hoyt is worth reading). Also should mention that The Changeling just won the 2018 Locus Award for Horror Novel.

  6. Zee says:

Nothing for or against the book itself, but that description of The Changeling seems super unprofessional. Tense error in the first sentence? Clunky pacing in the description? Ick. Totes forgiven if it’s self-pub though.

  7. Ren says:

@Zee: It’s published by an imprint of Random House, and that’s not the description on Amazon.

  8. Alyssa says:

The changeling is probably too creepy for my taste but I totally want to see a map of this wonderland New York. I feel like the black forest in Queens could be part of Forest Park.

  9. Allison says:

The Changeling just won the Locus Award for Best Horror Novel of 2017, so I one-clicked without stopping to think about it…

  10. MrsObedMarsh says:

I enjoyed Victor LaValle’s “The Ballad of Black Tom,” which is basically a fix-it fic of “The Horror at Red Hook.” He takes H.P. Lovecraft’s most incoherently racist story and turns it into a tale of one black man’s revenge against the society that mistreated him. CW for racism, horror elements, and mutilation.

  11. Nicolette says:

Found an odd cover while I was trying to build my cart.

    https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/rescuing-the-rogue-a-regency-romance

At least, I thought I found a vague period historical romance with the model sporting a big ole prom dress. But then I took a closer look. And I thought someone shopped a guy with a do-rag on his head.

But then I saved the image and looked at it in paint. And it turns out the guy has straight hair.

So I spend five minutes going from wanting to try more romances with Black/POC heroes, to confusion about what happened to this model’s hairstyle.

  12. Kari Dell says:

I know, I know, I’m not supposed to comment on my own book, but I would like to mention that Tougher in Texas has a plus-size heroine, which never seems to come up in reviews or discussions. So you can put this one on the very curvy girl list.

    Also, the hero is autistic.

  13. Shash says:

Is it just me or is anyone else exhausted by the “my life has sucked so far so I can never love or commit” trope? Nowadays the trend has shifted towards heroines rather than heroes behaving this way but I’m still exhausted. That’s why I couldn’t get into the otherwise excellent “Wanna Bet”.

  14. jws says:

@Kari Dell, just saw your comments about a plus sized heroine and an autistic hero. Hello one click!!!
