  • Circe

    Circe by Madeline Miller

Circe by Madeline Miller is $4.99! This is a Kindle Daily Deal and it’s being price matched. I know $4.99 is a little higher for books we feature on sale, but everyone and their mom has been loving Circe lately. I want to say that half of my book group has read it by now. Have you read it? Does it live up to the hype?

In the house of Helios, god of the sun and mightiest of the Titans, a daughter is born. But Circe is a strange child–not powerful, like her father, nor viciously alluring like her mother. Turning to the world of mortals for companionship, she discovers that she does possess power–the power of witchcraft, which can transform rivals into monsters and menace the gods themselves.

Threatened, Zeus banishes her to a deserted island, where she hones her occult craft, tames wild beasts and crosses paths with many of the most famous figures in all of mythology, including the Minotaur, Daedalus and his doomed son Icarus, the murderous Medea, and, of course, wily Odysseus.

But there is danger, too, for a woman who stands alone, and Circe unwittingly draws the wrath of both men and gods, ultimately finding herself pitted against one of the most terrifying and vengeful of the Olympians. To protect what she loves most, Circe must summon all her strength and choose, once and for all, whether she belongs with the gods she is born from, or the mortals she has come to love.

With unforgettably vivid characters, mesmerizing language and page-turning suspense, Circe is a triumph of storytelling, an intoxicating epic of family rivalry, palace intrigue, love and loss, as well as a celebration of indomitable female strength in a man’s world.

  • The Unyielding

    The Unyielding by Shelly Laurenston

RECOMMENDEDThe Unyielding by Shelly Laurenston is $1.99! This is the third book in the Call of Crows series, which Sarah absolutely loves.

Sarah gave this book a B:

This series, and each book within it, makes me feel better whenever I’m stressed or feeling powerless and overwhelmed. It acknowledges the rage inherent in feeling powerless, and transforms that rage into useful, powerful action. It’s the best kind of catharsis. The Unyielding may not be my favorite of the series, but I still recommend the Crows books loudly to everyone who will listen to me.

Stieg Engstrom, Angriest Viking Ever, has got big problems. The human Viking Clans of earth are in danger of being obliterated—along with the rest of the world—and the only one who may be able to save them is a super pain-in-the-ass Crow. Most people annoy Stieg, but this is the one woman he really can’t stand…

Erin Amsel loves being a Crow! Why wouldn’t she when the other Viking Clans are so hilariously arrogant and humorless? She’s not about to let all that come to an end! She just didn’t expect to be shoulder to shoulder in battle with Stieg. Then again, he’s so easy to torment—and also kind of cute.

With the future of the world riding on them, Stieg knows he’ll have to put aside his desperate need to kiss the smirk right off Erin’s face. Wait. What? He didn’t mean that—did he? No! They have one goal: To conquer the idiots. Because nothing bugs Stieg more than when idiots win. If only he can keep himself from suddenly acting like one….

  • Floored

    Floored by Ainslie Paton

Floored by Ainslie Paton is $1.99! This is a contemporary romance with a road trip element. Readers say that this romance has some great twists and turns, and blends action and emotion. However, it does feature criminal characters (I believe the hero is one of them), if that puts you off.

    Foreplay on Four Wheels

They’re a cheat, a con, a car crash waiting to happen…he’s messed up and she’s on the run.

From the moment Fetch gets knocked off his Harley, crawls into Driver’s car and offers her an obscene amount of money to drive him from Sydney to Perth — no questions, no names, no chit chat — they’re stuck with each other. By the time they arrive, they’re stuck on each other.

It’s lust at full throttle, with no seat belts. It could be more, but he’s a fake and she’s a liar.  They’re both neck deep in crime, and only one of them is on the right side of the law.

  • Miss Grimsley’s Oxford Career

Miss Grimsley’s Oxford Career by Carla Kelly

Miss Grimsley’s Oxford Career by Carla Kelly is $2.51 at Amazon and $2.99 at Kobo! This book has a 3.8-star average on Goodreads, and is a classic Signet Regency republished in digital format. Hold on to your catnip alarms: the heroine dresses in her brother’s robes to attend Oxford in secret.

    School For Scandal

Beautiful and brilliant Miss Ellen Grimsley considered it a scandal and a shame that she as a female could not attend Oxford, while a dashing dunderhead like her older brother Gordon could. On the other hand, society would reel in a scandalized shock at the idea of Ellen donning Gordon’s student robes to do his work.

But an even greater scandal loomed when a handsome lord in humble scholar’s disguise learned Ellen’s secret and set out to give her a most advanced lesson in love…

  1. Katie Lynn says:

I’ve heard from a few people that The Kiss Quotient by Helen Hoang is currently free in some non-USA markets on amazon.

Beauty and the Mustache by Penny Reid is free. Standalone contemporary that’s part of the knitting in the series series and is the prequel for her Winston brothers books. Highly recommend.

  2. KateB says:

CIRCE is so gooooooood! It made me want to get back into mythology! Loved it.

  3. MirandaB says:

The first 2 books in Richelle Meade’s Glittering Court series are $2.99 each.

  4. Katie Lynn says:

On the Ice by Amy Aislin is $0.99, mm contemporary hockey book with a college and pro player. I’m about 70% through, enjoying it so far.

  5. Darlynne says:

@Katie Lynn: THE KISS QUOTIENT is free, on Amazon UK, thank you! Amazing.

  6. Amy says:

Highly recommend the Carla Kelly book!

  7. Moriah says:

Downpour has a summer sale through 7/5. Navagation is horrible, but I did come across Sherry Thomas’s upcoming fall release, The Hollow of Fear, availale for $4.99 pre-order as well as Anna Lee Huber’s second Verity Kent title available for under $6.00 as a pre-order.

  8. JJB says:

Circe is wonderful; I absolutely loved it. (I’m more of a hardcover person and Miller is an autobuy for me, so Circe is at home on one of my literal top shelves.) It does have some triggering stuff in it, tho, I must say. It’s all handled well and the awesome ending makes the journey feel worth it, but it’s def not a, ah, light read in any way (to me.)

  9. E.L says:

Eh…I didn’t like Song of Achilles. I’m not sure if I’m willing to give Madeline Miller another shot.

I’ve heard a lot about Shelly Laurenston’s paranormal crow series. Maybe I’ll give that a try, although the last book in a trilogy is maybe not a good place to start.

  10. Pamala says:

Add me to the Madeline Miller fangirls and I loved both Song of Achilles AND Circe. I’m also a fan of the Wilson translation of the Odyssey so Miller’s version of Odysseus falls in line for me. Miller shows all the facets of Odysseus’ character from the clever and impetuous lord who tricks Achilles into revealing himself to outwitting the Trojans with that horse and finally to the man who not only goes home to Penelope but then has to outwit the suitors and still isn’t happy.

This is a bargain price for a great book.

  11. SusanH says:

@E.L. – As a big Crows fan, I’d recommend starting at the beginning. The third is my least favorite, and there is an arcing plot throughout the books that will make more sense if you follow from the beginning. Books one and two are my favorite, and I think some of the fun for those two would be lost if you read three before them.

  12. Kasi C Mireles says:

Amanda, you are the best. I have been saving Circe up since it came out, so have been holding off buying it. Thank you so much for letting us know it’s on sale.

  13. Tam says:

Hurray! I requested ‘Circe’ for my birthday, and none of my people came through for me.

  14. starlightarcher says:

I had to wait weeks before the Libby sent me a copy of Circe, and I renewed my Bad Decisions book club membership as I read all through the night!!!

As a practicing witch, Circe is one of the women and goddesses we venerate. So I’m always a little anxious when approaching a book that deals with witchcraft or one of the scions of my faith. But this book, there’s a truth to it, about the nature of magic and of spell craft that you don’t find in many books that touch on it. I felt as though Miller had an understanding of herbalism and witch craft practice.

For anyone who loves mythology, who practices magic or witchcraft- this is a great book and one you’re likely to enjoy reading. I can’t wait to borrow it from the library again and again!
