  • Kulti

    Kulti by Mariana Zapata

Kulti by Mariana Zapata is $1.49 at Amazon! It’s a Kindle Daily Deal and definitely check out the others, which include a Seanan McGuire! If you like slow burn romances and grumpy heroes, this one comes highly recommended by the Bitchery. However, some found the slow burn a little too slow, and we’ve previously posted a thoughtful guest review with a C grade.

“Trust me, I’ve wanted to punch you in the face a time or five.”

When the man you worshipped as a kid becomes your coach, it’s supposed to be the greatest thing in the world. Keywords: supposed to.

It didn’t take a week for twenty-seven-year-old Sal Casillas to wonder what she’d seen in the international soccer icon—why she’d ever had his posters on her wall, or ever envisioned marrying him and having super-playing soccer babies.

Sal had long ago gotten over the worst non-break-up in the history of imaginary relationships with a man that hadn’t known she’d existed. So she isn’t prepared for this version of Reiner Kulti who shows up to her team’s season: a quiet, reclusive shadow of the explosive, passionate man he’d once been.

Nothing could have prepared her for the man she got to know.

Or the murderous urges he brought out in her.

This was going to be the longest season of her life.

  • The Half-Drowned King

The Half-Drowned King by Linnea Hartsuyker

RECOMMENDEDThe Half-Drowned King by Linnea Hartsuyker is $1.99! This seems to fall into the historical fiction category and Redheadedgirl gave it a B+:

I liked this a lot. It’s a bit heavy and there’s a lot going on, but if you’re looking for something to scratch that Game of Thrones itch (but with real history), I think you’ll like this one.

Since the death of Ragnvald Eysteinsson’s father in battle, he has worked hard to protect his sister Svanhild and planned to inherit his family’s land when he comes of age. But when the captain of his ship tries to kill him on the way home from a raiding excursion, he must confront his stepfather’s betrayal, and find a way to protect his birthright. It is no easy feat in Viking-Age Norway, where a hundred petty rulers kill over parcels of land, and a prophesied high king is rising.

But where Ragnvald is expected to bleed, and even die, for his honour, Svanhild is simply expected to marry well. It’s not a fate she relishes, and when the chance to leave her stepfather’s cruelty comes at the hand of her brother’s arch-rival, Svanhild is forced to make the ultimate choice: family or freedom.

Drawing from the Icelandic Sagas, The Half-Drowned King takes inspiration from the true story of Ragnvald of Maer, the right hand man of King Harald Fairhair, first king of all Norway, and his sister, Svanhild, as she tries to find freedom in a society where the higher her brother rises, the greater her worth as a political pawn.

  • The Lady and the Captain

The Lady and the Captain by Beverly Adam

The Lady and the Captain by Beverly Adam is 99c at Amazon! At other vendors, it’s priced between $3.99 and $2.99. This is a historical romance with a fake relationship and forced proximity at sea. Readers are divided on the book’s mystery element. Some thought it enhanced the romance, while others thought it wasn’t very suspenseful. It’s the second book in the Gentleman of Honor series and the first book is also on sale!

Sarah Duncan had the kind of beauty suited for the ballrooms of London, not the back alleys of Ireland. But she was a healer, not a debutante. Her life was devoted to helping others, not dressing up and attending fancy balls.

And then one stormy night she met him. He was a young, English naval officer, who arrived on her doorstep with his deathly ill friend. Her life would be forever changed.

Lieutenant Robert Smythe, acting Captain of The Brunswick, was determined to find the killer who’d poisoned his commander and friend. With Sarah’s knowledge of plants and herbs, he would investigate this devious crime. Posing as his fiancée, she would be off limits to a crew of randy men at sea.

Sarah’s beauty was captivating, but her strength and courage drew him like a talisman. He was determined to catch the killer and keep her safe. Indeed, he would protect her with his very life.

  • The Tattooed Duke

The Tattooed Duke by Maya Rodale

The Tattooed Duke by Maya Rodale is $1.99! This is the third book in The Writing Girls series. The book can be read on its own, though you might get a better experience reading the previous ones. Readers loved the plot, but found it’s execution to have some holes. Have you read this one?

    Breaking news, scandal fans:

You thought you knew the dangerous Duke of Wycliff, London’s globe-trotting adventure addict. Here’s what you don’t know: he’s penniless. Sebastian Digby’s dukely lifestyle is over forever unless he finds a rich bride. But thanks to The London Weekly, everyone knows better than to tangle with this lothario. Besides (as one writer can testify), it seems that Sebastian has been unable to keep his hands of his own lowly housemaid…

    And that’s a problem. A big one.

Because that housemaid just happens to be me. Eliza Fielding. The same undercover Writing Girl who’s been exposing the Duke’s most intimate secrets to the world. And now I’ve gone and complicated everything by falling love with him. Passion and deception have never been so delicious, but now the truth could destroy everything. This is more than a conflict of interest. It’s a seduction where love itself hangs in the balance.

YES thank you! I bought Down Among the Sticks and Bones (McGuire) – those books are usually so expensive!

  2. Kareni says:

    I enjoyed Kulti.

  3. L. says:

I’ve never heard of The Half-Drowned King. This sounds like my kind of cat nip. Thanks for the heads up.

  4. Ren Benton says:

I grabbed the Rodale. I’m on a read-the-oldest-unread-thing-on-my-Kindle kick, though, so I might get around to it in 200 years or so. *universal reader sigh*

  5. Katie Lynn says:

I really enjoyed Kulti. I loved how Rey always put Sal’s career first, even if he had to give up something he wanted, because he knows how hard she worked to achieve success. He’s a completely emotionally stunted hero and I want to give him all the hugs. I also enjoy that Sal is allowed to not be the perfect, always pleasing feminine heroine. Girlfriend doesn’t put up with much nonsense.

  6. ms bookjunkie says:

Audible is having a members-only Summer Listening 2-for-1 Sale (that’s 2 audiobooks for 1 credit). The selection is not completely awful. History nerd that I (sometimes) am, I grabbed To Marry an English Lord by Gail MacColl and Carol McD. Wallace (narrated by Kate Reading, love love love her!) and The Life of Elizabeth I by Alison Weir (narrated by Davina Porter!!!).

Now if I only listened to some audiobooks in between my knitting podcasts… (Sadly, there were no interesting knitting-related books in the sale selection. Boo! I could use some Yarn Harlot or Clara Parkes for information, entertainment and comfort.)

  7. chrisz says:

For those of you who liked Kulti, Mariana Zapata’s website has an outtake from the future that is really cute. (also outtakes for 2 of her other books) It is listed under EXTRAS

  8. Antipodean Shenanigans says:

@chrisz thanks for the heads up – that was great.

I loved Kulti. When he calls her his best friend I “awwwwwww”-ed outloud.

  9. Lina says:

Kulti is not to be missed . You have lots or romance books that are sexy without being romantic. Kulti was a slow burn book but the romance was full on. All the feels here.

  10. Adrienne says:

I started Kulti because it had been recommended to me as a wonderful slowburn but I DNF’d it because it was just too slow to hold my interest. The characters didn’t even say much of anything to each other for about 30% of the book and as someone who prefers some a bantering couple, it just wasn’t my style. Also there was too much talk about poop.
