  • Dragon Actually

    Dragon Actually by GA Aiken

Dragon Actually by G.A. Aiken is $1.99! This is the first book in the Dragon Kin series, which many praise for having kickass heroines. It also looks like the book has a new cover. I apparently read this book according to my Goodreads, but I remember next to nothing about it.

It’s not always easy being a female warrior with a nickname like Annwyl the Bloody. Men tend to either cower in fear – a lot – or else salute. It’s true that Annwyl has a knack for decapitating legions of her ruthless brother’s soldiers without pausing for breath. But just once it would be nice to be able to really talk to a man, the way, she can talk to Fearghus the Destroyer.

Too bad that Fearghus is a dragon, of the large, scaly and deadly type. With him, Annwyl feels safe – a far cry from the feelings aroused by the hard-bodied, arrogant knight Fearghus has arranged to help train her for battle. With her days spent fighting a man who fills her with fierce, heady desire, and her nights spent in the company of a magical creature who could smite a village just by exhaling, Annwyl is sure life couldn’t get any stranger. She’s wrong…

  • Bound to a Spy

Bound to a Spy by Sharon Cullen

Bound to a Spy by Sharon Cullen is $1.99! Redheadedgirl was excited about this book back in October 2017, saying it was all sorts of catnip. Readers really enjoyed Cullen’s writing, but found that they couldn’t connect with the main characters. It has a 4-star rating on Goodreads.

A fierce Highland lass puts her life—and her heart—in the hands of a dashing British spy in this exhilarating romance from the USA Today bestselling author of Wed to a Spy.

Rose Turner’s mother sent her to the court of Mary, Queen of Scots, to give her a better life. Raised with rowdy brothers in a notorious border clan, Rose has plenty of experience fighting and thieving—and practically none when it comes to matters of decorum and discretion. Without a single ally, she has little hope of making a good marriage to salvage her family’s reputation. But after overhearing several influential lords plotting to murder the King of Scotland, Rose meets a man after all: a handsome spy trying to shield her from danger.

As one of the Queen Elizabeth’s top agents, Will Sheffield has come up north to keep a close eye on the goings-on at Mary’s court. A consummate professional, Will notices Rose’s presence at the secret meeting . . . and he’s not the only one. The wild, naïve beauty has made a fearsome enemy—and only Will can keep her safe. But after an attempt on Rose’s life pulls them tantalizingly close, Will faces an agonizing choice between professional loyalty or powerful passion.

  • Trigger Warning

    Trigger Warning by Neil Gaiman

Trigger Warning by Neil Gaiman is $2.99! This is a collection of short stories that Carrie was excited about in February 2015. Readers mentioned there’s a diverse selection of twenty-four stories, but a few others prefer his longform stuff. It has a 3.9-star rating on Goodreads.

In this new anthology, Neil Gaiman pierces the veil of reality to reveal the enigmatic, shadowy world that lies beneath. Trigger Warning includes previously published pieces of short fiction–stories, verse, and a very special Doctor Who story that was written for the fiftieth anniversary of the beloved series in 2013–as well “Black Dog,” a new tale that revisits the world of American Gods, exclusive to this collection.

Trigger Warning explores the masks we all wear and the people we are beneath them to reveal our vulnerabilities and our truest selves. Here is a rich cornucopia of horror and ghosts stories, science fiction and fairy tales, fabulism and poetry that explore the realm of experience and emotion. In “Adventure Story”–a thematic companion to The Ocean at the End of the Lane–Gaiman ponders death and the way people take their stories with them when they die. His social media experience “A Calendar of Tales” are short takes inspired by replies to fan tweets about the months of the year–stories of pirates and the March winds, an igloo made of books, and a Mother’s Day card that portends disturbances in the universe. Gaiman offers his own ingenious spin on Sherlock Holmes in his award-nominated mystery tale “The Case of Death and Honey”. And “Click-Clack the Rattlebag” explains the creaks and clatter we hear when we’re all alone in the darkness.

A sophisticated writer whose creative genius is unparalleled, Gaiman entrances with his literary alchemy, transporting us deep into the realm of imagination, where the fantastical becomes real and the everyday incandescent. Full of wonder and terror, surprises and amusements,Trigger Warning is a treasury of delights that engage the mind, stir the heart, and shake the soul from one of the most unique and popular literary artists of our day.

  • The Unsung Hero

The Unsung Hero by Suzanne Brockmann

The Unsung Hero by Suzanne Brockmann is 99c! This is a romantic suspense novel, and is the first book in The Troubleshooters series. Sarah reviewed this one way back in 2005 and gave it a B:

The themes of the novel, and the characters themselves were enough to ensure that, unlike some of the books I brought with me, this book came back home with me, and was not donated to the resort library. Brockmann’s exploration of love, risk, choice, heroism and bravery in everyday and in exceptional circumstances was fascinating.

After a near-fatal head injury, navy SEAL lieutenant Tom Paoletti catches a terrifying glimpse of an international terrorist in his New England hometown. When he calls for help, the navy dismisses the danger as injury-induced imaginings. In a desperate, last-ditch effort to prevent disaster, Tom creates his own makeshift counterterrorist team, assembling his most loyal officers, two elderly war veterans, a couple of misfit teenagers, and Dr. Kelly Ashton-the sweet “girl next door” who has grown into a remarkable woman. The town’s infamous bad boy, Tom has always longed for Kelly. Now he has one final chance for happiness, one last chance to win her heart, and one desperate chance to save the day . . .

  1. Becky says:

The Dragon Kin series is wonderful. If you are a Buffy fan, you will appreciate this series. Strong, smart women. Funny banter. Humor. Action. Loved every single book.

  2. quizzie says:

“Trigger Warning” is awsome – got it the day it came out and devoured it. Neil Gaiman is my favorite author so I’d biased, but there is all sorts of weird and wonderful stuff in the anthology.

  3. Sandra says:

It just so happens that I glommed the first 5-6 books and novellas over New Years. I read the first a few years ago but never followed up with the series. I wanted something light over a miserable weather long weekend, so dug it out again. I agree with everything Becky @1 says, plus add unabashed sex and lots of nudity. Dragons apparently have no hang-ups, even in human form.

As for the cover, according to GA Aiken’s website, this is a 2nd edition. The bonus novella at the end is different from the one in my copy. Mine has “Chains and Flames” which is the story of Bercelak and Rhiannon. The new edition has “A Tale of Two Dragons”, which is also available separately. “Chains and Flames” doesn’t appear to be available except in the first edition.

  4. Sandra says:

Sorry… as you can probably figure out from the context, although not from the first paragraph, I’m referring to the Aiken book.

  5. Iris says:

the amazon link for Dragon Actually doesn’t seem to be working.

  6. Amanda says:

@Iris: Fixed! It looks like the book has a new ISBN!

  7. SusanE says:

B&N has matched the sale prices for all of these books. Got links?

  8. Marci says:

I really enjoyed listening to G.A. Aiken’s Dragon Kin series last summer. It took me a little while to get into Dragon Actually though. I had to check it out a couple times before I finished it. But I’m glad I tried again because the second half of the book was fabulous. When I finished, I immediately grabbed the other audiobooks to glom. It’s become one of my favorite series.

Hoopla has the first several books on audio. The narrator, Hollie Jackson, does a fantastic job with the characters and helping distinguish each character with their own unique voice. It helped me a lot in keeping the large cast of characters straight.

  9. Amanda says:

    @SusanE: Updated! Thank you!

  10. Vic says:

G A Aiken aka Shelly Laurenston has written some great books with the requisite kick ass heroines. Her characters seem to be enjoying themselves and that translates to fun reads for me. My favorite is The Call of The Crows series, but all her books are worth reading.
