  • Burn Down the Night

Burn Down the Night by Molly O'Keefe

RECOMMENDEDBurn Down the Night by M. O’Keefe is 99c! I really loved this book as it features an unapologetic, cranky, bisexual heroine. It was even recommended as part of author Bree Bridges tweet thread on angry heroines. Some readers recommend reading the previous two books in the series, as you get more of an introduction to the heroine as a secondary character. I agree with the assessment, but I was able to finish the book just fine without reading the first two.

A battle for control turns explosive as a beautiful con woman takes a bad-boy biker hostage in this edgy, seductive novel set in the world of Everything I Left Unsaid (“Toe-curlingly sensual.”—Katy Evans) and The Truth About Him (“Absolutely one-click worthy”—J. Kenner).

The only thing that matters to me is rescuing my sister from the drug-cooking cult that once enslaved us both. I’ve run cons my whole life, and I’ll use my body to get whatever I need. Max Daniels is the last connection I have to that world, the one person reckless enough to get involved. Besides, now that his brothers have turned on him, he needs me too.

The deal was supposed to be simple: a place to hide in exchange for rescuing my sister. Now he’s my prisoner. Totally at my mercy. But I’m the one captivated. Enthralled. Doing everything he asks of me until I’m not sure who’s in control.

We both crave the heat. The more it hurts, the better. But what if Max wants a different life now, to leave the game . . . to love me? I thought I knew better than to get burned. Now I’m in too deep to pull away. And the crazy thing is . . . I don’t want to.

  • Games of Command

Games of Command by Linnea Sinclair

RECOMMENDED: Games of Command by Linnea Sinclair is $1.99! This is a scifi romance and I really loved this one. It has all sorts of good catnip for me! The hero has always had a crush on the heroine, though now they have an antagonistic relationship. Plus a scarred hero who is more cybernetic parts than man. Like many readers on Goodreads, I felt the book went a little long; it’s 500+ pages. It also has a 4-star rating on Goodreads.

The universe isn’t what it used to be. With the new Alliance between the Triad and the United Coalition, Captain Tasha “Sass” Sebastian finds herself serving under her former nemesis, biocybe Admiral Branden Kel-Paten–and doing her best to hide a deadly past. But when an injured mercenary winds up in their ship’s sick bay–and in the hands of her best friend, Dr. Eden Fynn–Sass’s efforts may be wasted.

Wanted rebel Jace Serafino has information that could expose all of Sass’s secrets, tear the fragile Alliance apart–and end Sass’s career if Kel-Paten discovers them. But the biocybe has something to hide as well, something once thought impossible for his kind to possess: feelings . . . for Sass. Soon it’s clear that their prisoner could bring down everything they once believed was worth dying for–and everything they now have to live for.

  • The Mark of the Tala

The Mark of the Tala by Jeffe Kennedy

The Mark of the Tala by Jeffe Kennedy is $2.99! This is the first book in the Twelve Kingdoms fantasy trilogy, which focuses on three sisters, each very different in their personalities. Readers loved the bond between the sisters, though found the pacing to be off at times. In my experience, fantasy pacing can be tricky because of all the world-building the author has to do. It has a 3.7-star rating on GR.

The tales tell of three sisters, daughters of the high king. The eldest, a valiant warrior-woman, heir to the kingdom. The youngest, the sweet beauty with her Prince Charming. No one says much about the middle princess, Andromeda. Andi, the other one.

Andi doesn’t mind being invisible. She enjoys the company of her horse more than court, and she has a way of blending into the shadows. Until the day she meets a strange man riding, who keeps company with wolves and ravens, who rules a land of shapeshifters and demons. A country she’d thought was no more than legend–until he claims her as its queen.

In a moment everything changes: Her father, the wise king, becomes a warlord, suspicious and strategic. Whispers call her dead mother a traitor and a witch. Andi doesn’t know if her own instincts can be trusted, as visions appear to her and her body begins to rebel.

For Andi, the time to learn her true nature has come. . .

  • The Devil of Dunakin Castle

The Devil of Dunakin Castle by Heather McCollum

The Devil of Dunakin Castle by Heather McCollum is 99c! This is a Kindle Daily Deal and is being price-matched at Barnes & Noble. This historical romance also has the hero and heroine caught in a blizzard. Readers loved the hero and the adventure elements of the story. However, some readers felt the heroine was too “wanton” for the time period. This can be read as a standalone.

Englishwoman, Grace Ellington, has made a home in Scotland, but to escape from the meddling people around her who seem to think she needs to wed right away—because women need saving, right? —she volunteers to journey north to aid a friend in childbirth.

Keir MacKinnon, the younger brother of the MacKinnon clan chief, has been raised to strike fear in people, on and off the battlefield. Trained to uphold MacKinnon law, he has hardened into a lethal warrior. Caught in a Highland blizzard with the feisty Grace, Keir realizes the beautiful woman who saved him can also save his nephew’s life.

Sparks fly when he takes her against her will to his home, and Grace’s courage is put to the ultimate test. Is Keir MacKinnon the passionate, kind man she saved in the Highland blizzard, or is he truly the cruel executioner who seeks to solve all issues by the sword?

  1. Ren Benton says:

You might be better off NOT having an introduction to the O’Keefe heroine as a secondary character. I read the first book (not the second because I was pissed it was part 2 of book 1…) and my impression of Joan from that most resembled the aging sex worker from Futurama.

    http://futurama.wikia.com/wiki/Petunia

It was a difficult adjustment to read about her being young and hot.

  2. DonnaMarie says:

I, on the other hand, LOVED the first books in the series. I LOVED all the books in the series. Okay, I love all things Molly O’Keefe. There, I said it. You should be reading it.

  3. Sandra says:

Is this a new release of Games of Command? That cover’s different from mine.

  4. Jeannette says:

The Games of Command is the same cover I have on my paperback version – maybe there was an alternate e-book cover? Thinking of how tattered the paperback is, it may be time to one-click the e-book.

I like Games of Command, but my favorite of Linnea Sinclair’s is An Accidental Goddess. What would you do if you woke up 500 years in the future and they’d made a religion out of your favorite sayings?

  5. LisaJo885 says:

Anything Linnea Sinclair is absolutely worth buying, especially at this price. I have Games of Command in paper and e-book, just in case. Also, I’ll second “An Accidental Goddess” as favorite. I <3 Simon.

  6. Eggedreader says:

Games of command is awesome. Now all I need is more recommendations for uptight cybernetic heroes!

  7. Dreamingintrees says:

Eggedreader, try Wanted and Wired by Vivien Jackson. I loved Heron, who is definitely an uptight cybernetic hero. I really liked the sequel as well.

  8. Susan says:

It’s been ages since Linnea Sinclair released a new book. Is she no longer writing?

I liked GOC but it was initially written in two parts and definitely reads that way to me, not as cohesive as I’d have liked.

  9. @Eggedreader @Dreamingintrees – I didn’t know this was a trope I needed. But now… *dives into a Goodreads rabbit hole*

  10. cleo says:

Second time in the last few days that the daily deals feature a bi heroine in a sub-genre I don’t care for. Argh.

I think I’m more likely to like an MC romance than a vampire romance but not sure that’s saying much.

How intense is this? Any on page violence?

  11. Amanda says:

@cleo: It’s a pretty dark romance. There’s some violence against the hero early on in the book and the heroine escaped from a cult. Her sister is still trapped there. If you’re wary about intensity, probably skip this one.

  12. Ren Benton says:

@Cleo: The O’Keefe has a little bit of gun violence at the beginning and the end, but most of the story is them hiding out with the hero cuffed to the bed. It’s not cheerful, but it’s at the lower end of the intensity spectrum for its class.

  13. Maggie says:

Amanda Quick’s the Burning Lamp is on sale today at Amazon for $1.99. This is part of the Arcane Society series.

  14. shel says:

    @Susan
She posted last summer on her fb page she has a new contract. I don’t think any publication date(s) were included, though.

  15. ElsieEm says:

Anyone else see an oddly tattooed and bonily armored elephant in The Devil of Dunakin Castle’s shoulder, arm, armpit hair and sculpted pec?

  16. Sandra says:

@Susan: She published a fantasy prequel to Accidental Goddess a couple years ago. It reads like an early effort that got pulled out, polished a little bit and released into the wild.

But I would love to see sequels to both AG and GOC. I want more furzels and more Simon.

  17. Lora says:

As I scrolled past, I thought the last book cover was a horse’s face. Apparently it’s some dude’s arm. I don’t feel like that’s a mistake that should be possible.

Anyway, my favorite angry heroine is Agnes from Agnes and the Hitman.

  18. Caitlin says:

I love Agnes!! Actually I really love Jennifer Crusie. There are a few that don’t work for me, but overall, they work so so much. There’s even a dyslexic hero in Bet Me!

  19. Jeannette says:

Agnes and her frying pan are a pair that are firmly on my keeper shelf. And the flamingos, oh the lonely flamingo Cerise…. I like Jennifer Crusie, but I really really enjoyed her 3 joint books with Bob Mayer. If they would do another one that would definitely be on my one click list.

  20. Karenza says:

Games of Command is my all time favorite romance and the one I would take with me if running out of a burning building (ok …all I realy need to do is take my kindle, but this sounds more dramatic). I loved all her books.
Its really sad she stopped writing for a while – she really is a fabulous writer.
