2018 SBTB Hanukkah-palooza, Part Two

A menorah against a blue and white background with the new ladies quadrant in a frame next to the menorahHappy Hanukkah!

It’s time for the second Hanukkah giveaway of our annual palooza-de-giveaways, which is a lot of fun to plan each year.

Today’s giveaway is simple and easy, designed to help you read All the Things, especially if you’ve been perhaps looking to upgrade to a new device.

Today: a Kindle Paperwhite!

This is a Kindle Paperwhite with Wi-Fi connectivity and special offers. It’s got a 6″ glare-free screen, and it weighs about 7.6 ounces or 217 grams. I love the idea that we can carry hundreds of books in less than 8 ounces.

Would you like to enter? Excellent! Leave a comment and tell us how many books you think you own right now (guesses are fine!).

Standard disclaimers apply: I am not being compensated for this giveaway. Void where prohibited. Open to international residents were permitted by applicable law. Must be over 18 and open to the option of carrying a boatload of books. Naming your Kindle is highly recommended. We suggest Booky McBookface. Comments will close Thursday 14 December at or near 12pm ET, and winner will be announced shortly afterward.

Good luck, Happy Hanukkah, and thank you for being part of Smart Bitches!

WINNER UPDATE: The winner of night two of our Hanukkah-palooza is Christine! Be sure to check your inbox and spam folders shortly!

  1. Andrea says:

How many books I have? Oh crap. Including digital books? Um … how do I say this and not seem like a hoarder or a crazy person? Okay, that ship has sailed – probably nine hundred. Digital and physical. Understand, some are books that I inherited from my grandmother, who also … collected books. *sigh* It’s family madness, isn’t it?

  2. Jcscot says:

I have somewhere in the region of 900 or so digital books plus approximately 400-500 physical books (my husband has a couple of hundred books and the offspring have another coupld of hundred between them) I have culled a lot of books since getting a kindle a decade ago and now rarely buy “real” books.

I only know this because we have just moved house and we had to do a rough count for the removers.

  3. Lil says:

I think it’s around 4-500 (I cut down a lot of my book collection when I moved) including digital books.

  4. LaurieF says:

Around a thousand in paper and about the same in ebooks. It was a lot more in paper and then I moved 3 times in 5 years and each time brought less physical books with me. The harder they are to replace the less likely I’ll let them go. Thanks again for the giveaway.

  5. Avital Ordan says:

Including digital – 800 or so.

  6. Livia says:

The ebooks – around 200. But the paperbacks are hard to count: kids and family have books that coexist alongside the shelves with my romance and economics and travel books.. Around 600 I would guess.

  7. Jan says:

With my last move several months ago, I got rid of all books that can be purchased as an ebook. So, about 100 remaining.. I have about 2000 books on my iPad. I’ll have no hope of ever getting caught up, but love having them at my fingertips in case I get stranded somewhere.

  8. GHN says:

I have somewhere between 900 – 1000 Dead Tree books.
As for ebooks – I have more. Lots more. I had a look at those file folders on my PC, and it came to just above 25000 files. No, I did not accidentally put in an extra zero. Twenty five thousand files.
Now, I do have some of those books in two formats, so there are a number of them that are doubles for this reason. If I’m conservative and slash the file number in half, I still end up with more than 12000 titles.
(I’ve been buying ebooks for almost 20 years, so it adds up…)

  9. Jen says:

LibraryThing tells me I have 891 paper books, and I probably have a couple hundred ebooks too. After trying to (unsuccessfully) limit my paper copies, I finally have the space and bookshelves to increase those numbers!

  10. dine says:

including digital and paper books, I probably have ~900 books? and that’s not including downloaded fanfic stories (which totals somewhere around 5,000 titles)

  11. Francesca says:

Around 2000 physical books after the great purge a few years ago(my house is wall-to-wall books shelves)and maybe 200 ebooks. A two year reading slump a while back left me buying only a handful of new books per year.

  12. Lauren says:

Probably about 200 digital and about 150 paper books. After reading some of the other comments, I now have #bookgoals.

  13. Konst. says:

All paper+ e-books together I head towards the ~few 1000 territory, anyway there always seems to be more to buy :))

  14. Jennifer Sue says:

According to Amazon I have 3700 ebooks in my library and about 40 audio books and I think about 1,000 paper – I have culled my library a bit recently

  15. Vivienne says:

maybe 300 to 400 dead tree books and around 600 ebooks. Might be underestimating though.

  16. Deborah says:

1,027 ebooks and I’ll estimate 2,500 paper. (I wish I had the patience to count the physical books because I’m planning to do a massive purge over my Christmas holidays and I want the tremendous sense of satisfaction one gets when culling a library from 2,682 volumes to 2,633…oh, who am I kidding? 2,674.)

  17. Hope-and-Memory says:

Oof, if I include e-books as well as print, I’d guess several hundred!

  18. k8899 says:

Somewhere between 50 and 100 I think, kept down by the price of books in Australia.

  19. Abby says:

I think I probably have around 400-500? At least in my home and on my Kindle. My parents still have A LOT of my old books.

  20. Francene says:

Ok true confessions time. I have at least 3317 ebooks according to Amazon and I’m not sure how many physical books we have. Double stacked bookcases, multiple piles on the floor, bins of paperbacks, perhaps 3000 but it’s likely to be more like 4000.

  21. Veronica says:

We have a library room full of books! My guess is about 5000, but it might be more. Another 700-800 digital.

  22. Anonymous for this says:

Oh, Lordy. I’m going anonymous for this so ya’ll don’t stage an intervention, although, TBH, I don’t really feel all that bad about it. I own about 20K ebooks, 2K audiobooks, and maybe 1-2K paper books. I did a massive purge of paper several years ago, donating the majority of my collection to the library. And I’m still weeding. I’ve been trying to get rid of as many physical possessions as I can (with some exceptions) but digital stuff doesn’t count.

  23. Erin says:

I would have to estimate a couple thousand books. Between alllllll the books on my kindle, real paper books, cookbooks, law school text books, well, it’s a lot. Thousands.

  24. Alyssa says:

Probably only a couple hundred. I live in a small apartment and dejunk often. Plus most of the books i read are from the library.

  25. Ellie says:

Probably 1200 digital books. 50 boxes of paper books in storage. Probably another couple hundred paper books on my shelves at home.

  26. Azure says:

When I first saw today’s question, I blushed and thought, “People are going to think I have a serious problem if I admit to the actual number of books I own.” Then I read some of the comments and I feel right at home!! The official number of ebooks, according to my files: 3850. Dead tree books? Probably a couple hundred that I should get around to donating. The reason I don’t is because the books aren’t available in ebook format and even though I almost never read a paper book anymore, I tell myself that I might want to reread one someday.

  27. Diane says:

Does infinity count? My guess, between real and electronic, 1500 maybe?

  28. Yaara says:

Likely 2,000+ especially if you count all my Sweet Valley (twins/high/university) and Baby Sitters’ Club books

  29. Sukari says:

Only 400 ebooks (I’m surprised, but I do have access to a very good library system) and about 1000+ physical books? I’m not going to count those.

  30. Lostshadows says:

I really don’t know. I think it’s about 700 digital and, at least, 1000 in paper.

Probably way more with things like old YA and children’s books I boxed up ages ago, but haven’t done anything with.

  31. Heather S says:

~300 in print, wayyyyyy more than that digitally because the book sales posted here are dangerous.

  32. Rebecca W. says:

700-800 physical books? It’s hard to tell because I have A LOT in my apartment (and it’s a studio, for crying out loud!) and I have a lot back in my parents’ house. And then there are the eBooks! Maybe I have 50 of those? I tend to take those out of the library rather than buy, hence the lower numbers.

  33. blodeuedd says:

How many!? Impossible. 2000 ebooks..wait that is only amaon freebies. Ebooks does not count. Omg too many. Hundreds of prints, millions of ebooks

  34. By rough guesstimate, I have somewhere around 5K books, print and digital. Only part of my collection is categorised anywhere. Oy.

OMG, I didn’t consider my audiobook library! I definitely have way more than 5K then. o_O

  35. Helen R-S says:

About 1500 paper books, and about 70 digital books.

  36. TaraR says:

I… couldn’t even begin to guess. Not less than a thousand.

  37. SandyL says:

How many books do I own? Far too many. Three large bookshelves, two small bookshelves and about 8 bins of paperbacks!

  38. Connie says:

With paper and e-books probably around 800 books.

  39. Kat says:

Oh gosh, probably around 400 paperbacks and hardbacks, and I have 8153 Amazon Kindle books and approximately 150 IBook titles.

  40. srs says:

We just moved and have 20 boxes of unpacked books sitting in a corner waiting for new bookshelves. And I just checked Calibre and I have over 2500 books in digital. So, a lot of boks.
