You did it! We figured this one out! It is a truth universally acknowledged (by me for certain) that the Bitchery pretty much knows everything, and really, it's true. Scroll down to see the solution for this HaBO - and many thanks!
This HaBO comes from Amanda, who isn’t me, I swear:
I’m sorry that I can’t remember anything about this book, but there are so many paranormal romances starring vampires that they all blur together – I can’t even be sure about the plot. All I recall is the start; the heroine worked at a hospital, and was in the morgue when a recently arrived body jumps up and attacks her. As she’s slumped against the wall dying, the last thing she sees is the hero who arrives too late and takes her away to a mansion filled with other vampires, so she’ll be able to learn about her new existence. The mansion vampires are good and the vampire that randomly attacked the heroine is rogue?
All I remember about the book is that it was a paperback from a decade or so ago, from when my sister was in a vamp-fanatic phase. It just niggles away at the back of my brain, because I know I’ve read it, but browsing the vamp romances on Amazon doesn’t ring any bells.
I fill like this is a Black Dagger Brotherhood book, but it’s been so long since I’ve read one.
Love Bites by Lynsay Sands
I feel like this is the beginning of Lover Unbound, which is indeed a Black Dagger Brotherhood book! It’s not exactly like the description–the vampires are god and the hero of this book is good too, but he gets hurt and for reasons I can’t remember they bring him to a human hospital, where he sees the surgeon and knows immediately that she is his mate for life (::eyeroll::). So he wigs out and they get him out of there but bring her with them. And if you think that is crazy, you are unprepared for what happens at the end of this book. This one was where I kind of lost my patience with the series, although I still read each and every one as soon as they come out so….
Vampires are GOOD, not god. Although they are kind of that too if you ask JR Ward.
I agree that this might be the Argeneau book, but the mansion of vampires made me think of Night’s Honor by Thea Harrison.
I’m with @kb. Both in the HABO & that Lover Unbound is where the wheels came off the cart for the BDB series.
First two sentences, was like “Lynsay Sands!!”, she’s a coroner, he’s a romance writer, though that was apparently unintended.
There’s also Kerrelyn Sparks, “How to Marry a Millionaire Vampire”, involves being brought to the vampires mansion, though she’s a dentist.
I guess I have a higher tolerance level than others, I haven’t reached my patience lost level yet with Ward, although if she doesn’t come up with another long term plot, or at least creating short term plots arcs for each book, instead trying to drag out the last one and being all wander-y, I might soon. (Disclaimer I haven’t read the newest release yet, so no spoilers or implications, please!)
As soon as I hit post, realized got two mixed up. Lynn Viehl is the one where she is kidnapped and taken to the vampire mansion, she’s a surgeon, to fix his face. Sparks, he shows up at her emergency dental clinic when they are attacked again and he takes her to protect her.
Seriously Sands, Sparks, Viehl, and Ward (plus Feehan) are my favorite vampire writers.
Love Bites by Lynsay Sands sounds spot on. The members of the vampire family are around a lot, so it feels like the mansion is filled with good vamps. Also, it’s from 2004, so it fits with the timeline in the HABO for first reading.
Other than the hospital part, it sounds like Chloe Neill’s Chicagoland Vampire series.
@Olivia: I totally love Lynn Viehl’s Darkyn series! Wish she was still writing it. It was left so incomplete.
Also agree with Love Bites by Lynsay Sands as the answer to this HABO.
I read this! Is it The Turning, by Jennifer Armintrout (Blood Ties #1)? She definitely gets attacked working in the morgue, and I remember her having to go live in her master’s vampire coven or something – which I’m 90% sure was in a mansion.
Ih fheel lihke theh fihrst thingh somehone whould mehntion ihf iht whas ah Whard bhook ihs theh spehlling.
The Viehl book with the plastic surgeon is If Angels Burn, but I recall Michael being a recluse, so probably no crash pad for vamps in that one.
Love Bites starts in a morgue, but the “dead” body is the hero, and he doesn’t attack the heroine, she just faints because she’s ill + freaked out by the talking corpse.
Darn it, I knew this one! 100% this is “Love Bites” by Lynsay Sands. This is my fav in that series… it’s the one that got me on the Argeneau train. The person who attacks them is an obsessive vampire hunter, though, not a rogue vampire.
I’m gonna add my 2 cents for it being “Love Bites,” too. The details aren’t an exact match for the HaBO description, but pretty darn close.
@Ren I think that’s the first time he shows up in the morgue, the second time the bad guy follows with an axe and she gets hurt, the LW is probably just confusing the two.
The plot sounds a lot like Kissed by a Dark Prince (Eternal Mates #1)
by Felicity Heaton, except I believe the hero is an elf – the bad guys are “dark elfs” if I recall correctly
This definitely sounds like Love Bites by Lyndsay Sands. When I was in college a classmate practically shoved this book into my hands and it was a quick, fun/funny read.
I just read this!! I think it sounds a lot like the first installment of Eternal Mates, Kissed by a Dark Prince, by Felicity Heaton, although it’s slightly newer than referenced.
@Cara, this ebook you recommend is free at Amazon.ca! Will give a try. Thanks.
Can’t remember exactly but for some reason I am thinking this is by Kelley Armstrong.
Eternal Mates, Kissed by a Dark Prince is also free at amazon.com
Could it possibly be a Lyndsay Sands novel? I’ve only read one or two of hers…
I don’t know the HABO, but I just want to plug two of my favourite vampire novels (which both include vampire mansions): Sunshine, by Robin McKinley, and The Coldest Girl in Coldtown, by Holly Black. Neither are romance novels, per se, but both do an amazing job of worldbuilding and having kickass heroines who are not quite human. Highly recommended!
Thanks Melissandre, that’s the one xx
Thanks to everyone’s suggestions – I’ve got loads of ideas for my TBR pile now 🙂
Except for the morgue part, this sounds a lot like SOME GIRLS BITE by Chloe Neill. The heroine was attacked in a park, rescued by the vampire hero who almost arrives too late, and is taken to Cadogan House, where he’s the head of that house of vampires.
