This is an older Kearsley title, originally published in 1995, I believe, and features the hallmarks of her novels: parallel storylines in the present and past, a mystery, and some romance. This book has a 3.7 star average on GR, and while some readers adored it, others felt the mix of history and contemporary plot was out of balance.

The Swan Thieves by Elizabeth Kostova is $2.99! This is literary fiction with historical and mystery elements. I’ve heard that Kostova’s writing is really beautiful, though I haven’t read anything by her just yet. However, some didn’t find the characters particularly likable.

Buck Naked by Evangeline Anderson is $1.99! This is a paranormal romance with lots of catnip: neighbors to loves, an older heroine, and a hero who can shift into the extinct Irish Elk. Readers thought this was a really fun, not terribly serious, paranormal, while others felt it was a little underwhelming.

Kostova’s The Historian is a doorstopper of a book, but well worth the time.

Susanna Kearsley on sale is an auto buy for me, and Named of the Dragon was 1.99 just a week ago or so too. Books on sale is one of my favorite features
I’m trying to make my way through Ready, Set, Rouge. I love the bluestocking characters, but the book is badly in need of an editor. So far, the heroine’s eye color changed within a span of a couple of pages, and a character magically appears in a scene she’s not supposed to be in (because the other characters were literally just talking about how she was in bed asleep.) I had to put it down out of frustration.
I haven’t read any of these books, but the whole romance/sci-fi genre seems to be really picking up. I guess these romance books become a whole different beast once you add the paranormal side of things – I blame twilight.
@Meg Thanks for the heads up. My finger was all but hovering over that one-click button, but inconsistencies like that are a pet peeve. Too bad. That cover is GORGEOUS, though.

Writing Tools: 55 Essential Strategies for Every Writer by Roy Peter Clark is a Kindle Daily Deal for $2.99, price matched at B&N and Kobo (I can’t navigate Apple to check there). Since I can never remember the name, I call this “the sentence-writing book.” Whether you’re writing letters, memos, homework, articles, blog posts, or fiction, this book is filled with strategies to tweak your writing to be more effective at the sentence level. Clark explains at length why old writing chestnuts typically presented as “NEVER DO THIS THING” are indeed problematic when carelessly done but can be wielded to good effect with intent. Once you understand the effect of passive voice and adverbs and so forth, you can make an informed decision about whether it belongs in that sentence or needs to be eliminated with a rewrite.
I give paper copies to students, writers, and everyone else I know who has occasion to communicate via the written word. If you fall under any of those headings, I recommend grabbing it digitally while it’s cheap.
