  • What a Gentleman Wants

What a Gentleman Wants by Caroline Linden

What a Gentleman Wants by Caroline Linden is $1.99! This is the first book in the Reece Family Trilogy. You can also nab the second book for 99c. There’s a fake relationship element to this historical romance and readers loved the stuffy hero. However, some readers felt the plot is a bit unbelievable. It has a 3.7-star rating on Goodreads.

Two virtual strangers are swept into a sizzling, spellbinding world of daring deception and unexpected passion in Caroline Linden’s thrilling new romance. . .

    What A Gentleman Wants

Marcus Reese, Duke of Essex, has spent most of his life pulling his twin brother out of trouble. An occasional thank you would suffice; instead, his resentful sibling forges his name to a marriage license and presents him with an unwanted wife. She’s a vicar’s widow with a mind of her own who may be the first person in Marcus’s well-ordered life to make him feel. . .completely out of control.

Hannah can’t help but curse her own idiocy. Dire straits have led her to the altar with a gentleman she hardly knows. Played for a fool, she’s embarrassed, furious, and worse, married to an equally outraged stranger–an exasperating man who unleashes all manner of emotions in Hannah, not to mention unwanted desire. Reluctantly, she agrees to play the wife until he can sort out the mess. But the nearness of the undeniably attractive Duke and the passion in his black eyes unsettles her well-guarded heart–making her want to do so much more than “act” the role of blissful bride. . .

  • Miss Buncle’s Book

Miss Buncle’s Book by D.E. Stevenson

RECOMMENDEDMiss Buncle’s Book by D.E. Stevenson is $1.99! This is a Kindle Daily Deal and is being price-matched today! Carrie loved this book and gave it an A:

For the most part, Miss Buncle’s Book is not a laugh out loud book. Its humor is gentle and understated but very funny nonetheless. It’s also a delightful ode to the power of the written word.

Barbara Buncle is in a bind. Times are harsh, and Barbara’s bank account has seen better days. Stumped for ideas, Barbara draws inspiration from fellow residents of her quaint English village, writing a revealing novel that features the townsfolk as characters. The smashing bestseller is published under the pseudonym John Smith, which is a good thing because villagers recognize the truth. But what really turns her world around is when events in real life start mimicking events in the book. Funny, charming, and insightful, this novel reveals what happens when people see themselves through someone else’s eyes.

  • The Witches of Cambridge

The Witches of Cambridge by Menna van Praag

The Witches of Cambridge by Menna van Praag is $1.99! This is women’s fiction with a bit of magical realism, and it’s been compared to the writing of Sarah Addison Allen (which makes my ears perk up). Readers are divided when it comes to the cast of characters. Some say they loved how different storylines came together, while others found it made the book too confusing.

For fans of Alice Hoffman, Sarah Addison Allen, and Adriana Trigiani, The Witches of Cambridge reveals an astonishing world where the heart’s deepest secrets give way to the magic of life-changing love.

Be careful what you wish for. If you’re a witch, you might just get it.

Amandine Bisset has always had the power to feel the emotions of those around her. It’s a secret she can share only with her friends—all professors, all witches—when they gather for the Cambridge University Society of Literature and Witchcraft. Amandine treasures these meetings but lately senses the ties among her colleagues beginning to unravel. If only she had her student Noa’s power to hear the innermost thoughts of others, she might know how to patch things up. Unfortunately, Noa regards her gift as a curse. So when a seductive artist claims he can cure her, Noa jumps at the chance, no matter the cost.

Noa’s not the only witch who’s in over her head. Mathematics professor Kat has a serious case of unrequited love but refuses to cast spells to win anyone’s heart. Kat’s sister, Cosima, is not above using magic to get what she wants, sprinkling pastries in her bakery with equal parts sugar and enchantment. But when Cosima sets her sights on Kat’s crush, she conjures up a dangerous love triangle.

As romance and longing swirl through every picturesque side street, the witches of Cambridge find their lives unexpectedly upended and changed in ways sometimes extraordinary, sometimes heartbreaking, but always enchanting.

  1. DonnaMarie says:

Huge thumbs up for Miss Buncle’s Book! I picked it up after Carrie’s review, and it was delightful in the way I have books with characters named Pettigrew to be.

That anthology, though? I am taking a hard pass based solely on the blurb for the Nicki Sloan story. Did anyone else get the most unpleasant picture in their brain from that? I need a mind sanitizer.

  2. Empress of Blandings says:

I found the phrase ‘put a baby in her belly’ in the blurb for the Susan Stoker story a bit… eurghhh (and the autocorrect just changed belly’ to Nellys, which is somehow funnier) I’m trying to figure out if that’s going to reflect the writing, which would be off-putting.

Thanks though for the reminder about Miss Buncle’s Book, which I am definitely going to try!

  3. DonnaMarie says:

@Empress, I don’t have a feeling one way or other for that phrase, but I hear eating more Cale is good for you.

    Sorry.

    Really.

  4. KellyM says:

A question that would be good for the next podcast with an author is: Where do they come up with some of the odd names of places and/or characters?

IMO sometimes the names of either are so outlandish it detracts from the book. I am rereading Kristen Ashley’s Heaven and Hell and Kia’s dead asshole husband’s name was Cooter Clementine. I guess his real name was Jeff? I cringe when they refer to Cooter in the book. I keep thinking the asshole is dead, let his name die with him!

  5. Empress of Blandings says:

    @DonnaMarie you’re not sorry, and neither am I. Well, I am a bit – I’m sorry I didn’t think of it first.

  6. Rose says:

This anthology sounds like a balance of very sexy and a little bonkers. I particularly liked this description:

He sat among the Monarchs, the Presidents, the Captains of Industry, and the wealthiest people in the world. He was a man that was never told no… until her.

I’m really hoping that story has zero sex and is just an arrogant CEO being dressed down for a lack of diversity and decent maternity leave at his tech startup.

  7. Jan says:

Based on Carrie’s recommendation, I read “Miss Buncle’s Book” and I loved it.

It sometimes takes awhile to read the books recommended on the few sites I read everyday, and when I do, I think it’s too late to say thanks. So here is a thanks to all of you, both the moderators and the readers. I have found many books through your website.

  8. Katie Lynn says:

Rule by Jay Crownover is 99 pennies, NA with a lot of angst but very well done.

Baby Come Back by M O’Keefe is currently free (secret baby!).

New release by Kate Meader in a new hockey series is currently $1.99 through the end of the week. Title is Irresistable You.

  9. Chelle says:

@kellym. That’s a great idea! Witness the example in this antho: Dryce and Ro. Did someone lose a bet?

@empress. I’m with you. I got to ‘put a baby in her belly’ and noped out.

  10. Suzanne says:

I saw this anthology a couple of weeks ago (Amazon recommended it, because I’m a Molly O’Keefe fan) and I one-clicked without much thought. BUT, upon further investigation (of the other authors) I deleted this faster than I one-clicked. And in light of the recent controversy with Carina Press, I”m glad I deleted. Taboo porn is not romance! Please keep it off romance sites!

  11. Genie E. says:

What in god’s name is going on with that collection?

Many of those blurbs do not inspire confidence in the editorial judgement over that book. o_O

  12. Lady Voluptua Raventresses says:

Is anyone else uncomfortable with the publishing industry using “women’s fiction” as a genre, as in one of the books described above? This is not at all a criticism of the Smart Bitches, as the term is widely in use and merely jogged my memory that I’ve noticed this in online and storefront book shops a great deal during the last year (happily the overtly patronizing “chic lit” seems to be falling out of usage). There is no “men’s fiction” so I feel it implies only women would bother to read other women, but male authors are for everyone. I do really love many books aimed squarely at women, and want to thoroughly support women writers and audiences. It’s not a discomfort with feminine spaces, but a discomfort with an industry confining us to feminine spaces. I can appreciate that some women may approve of the genre, for the ease of finding more women authors. What does the Bitchery think? I greatly enjoy and respect the writers and readers of this delightful site and value your perspective.

  13. Emma L says:

Lady Voluptua (if I may) – I am with you on disliking the “women’s fiction” label. There is enough of a sneer implied when someone says “romance”, and I think it will be doubled if/when the phrase “women’s fiction” is widely used. Also, does that mean anything written by a woman is “women’s fiction”. Might make things difficult for the next Harper Lee etc!

On a different note, any Brits reading this who have read the Witches of Cambridge book? I studied at Cambridge (for ten years! My parents despaired of me ever actually getting a job…) and now live 30 mins drive away. A reviewer on Amazon UK said the Americanisms and inaccuracies in the book were very jarring. Part of me likes the idea of reading about something in a setting I know so well, but I don’t want to waste my money if I am going to keep getting kicked out of the story… So, any thoughts?

  14. Ren Benton says:

“Women’s fiction” is one of those subtly misogynistic labels that assumes “books for men” is the default. Thrillers, fantasy, SF, horror, litrachur, etc. don’t need a gendered label because Everybody Knows™ women only read and write gushy feelings stuff, which can be neatly segregated so it doesn’t spread cooties.

  15. SB Sarah says:

@Emma & Lady Voluptua (and that name is awesome btw):

I agree with you. “Women’s fiction” as a term makes me tired just looking at it. Unfortunately, there isn’t a better term to describe “fiction that centers on women’s stories, wherein romance may be part of the plot but is not the central point of that plot.” I want to communicate what type of book it is, and the descriptive terms that make for clear explanation are not that varied.

  16. Lady Voluptua Raventresses says:

@SB Sarah Thank you for your kind reply (and glad you like the name!). I agree, there isn’t a better term right now for books by authors who value women and their experiences. Perhaps we’ll come up with one here! Many thanks to Emma L and Ren Benton for their comments, too. Wishing you all a lovely day.

  17. SusanE says:

    How about “women-centric” fiction?
