Slayer of Words: Beverly Jenkins Commemorative Shirt

One of the things I’m working on this week is an overhaul of the SBTB swag collection. I’m designing new shirts and mugs, mousepads and stickers – it’s kind of fun.

Also fun: having ideas for other people! I was thinking about Beverly Jenkins’ acceptance speech for the 2017 Nora Roberts Lifetime Achievement Award – and if you haven’t seen it, here’s a link to the recording exactly where her speech begins. Definitely watch it, and definitely have tissues.

I was thinking specifically of this part:

“You have no idea what it means to be a descendant of a people who, by law, were denied access to the written word; and be here before you this evening as a celebrated, award-winning author.

So now, here I stand, Beverly Elaine Hunter Jenkins. First of her name, descendant of slaves, daughter of Delores, slayer of words and the 2017 Recipient of RWA’s Nora Roberts Lifetime Achievement Award!”

SNIFFLE.

After I mopped off my face again, I realized: “Slayer of Words” on a t-shirt would be pretty nifty.

So I emailed Ms. Bev, and we talked all about it and worked out a plan.

Have a look!

Mousepads are cool, too, right?

More details!
  • The t-shirt is shown in a black v-neck, but is available in all black t-shirt variations offered by Zazzle, including regular scoop neck, wide scoop neck, and long sleeved. To pick the style you want, just click where it says more on the Zazzle page, to the right of the style currently selected: Close up of t shirt style option link
  • All proceeds will be donated to the charity of Ms. Bev’s choosing, Doctors Without Borders.
  • I (Sarah) will be reporting the profit and donation from the sale of these two items quarterly as part of the SBTB Business Update.

I’m going to be updating our store with new designs for all the SBTB swag, but this was so much fun, I didn’t want to wait to share it.

Go forth and slay all the words!

ETA 8/8: By request! I have added a coffee mug to the collection!

I met Beverly Jenkins at RT when I was volunteering at the Registration Desk. (They were nice enough to let me when they pretty much had everything under control)
They were showing me what I needed to do and she was the first one to come up to the desk while I was working. The RT volunteers are cool, doing this for so many years, that they know everybody and can chat with all the people at the desk like they are long lost friends (which they probably are).
Nope not me. Beverley Jenkins came up to the table and I just stared at her and I told her Oh my god I know who you are. She laughed, asked my name and shook my hand. She was such a nice person to meet. After that I took a deep breath and managed to keep my cool the rest of the time I was up there and only fangirled on the inside.
