  • You’re Never Weird on the Internet (Almost)

You’re Never Weird on the Internet (Almost) by Felicia Day

RECOMMENDED: You’re Never Weird on the Internet (Almost) by Felicia Day is $1.99! This is a Kindle Daily Deal, but isn’t being price-matched just yet. Carrie gave this one a B:

On the whole, I enjoyed this book. I read parts of it out loud, laughing, to my husband. I giggled frequently. I read the whole thing in a few hours. It’s a fun read with some very important things to say – take care of yourself, treat your mental health as seriously at you treat your physical health, don’t be afraid to make mistakes, and embrace your own weirdness and creativity. As a quick, light read, this is great.

From online entertainment mogul, actress, and “queen of the geeks” Felicia Day, a funny, quirky, and inspiring memoir about her unusual upbringing, her rise to Internet-stardom, and embracing her individuality to find success in Hollywood.

The Internet isn’t all cat videos. There’s also Felicia Day—violinist, filmmaker, Internet entrepreneur, compulsive gamer, hoagie specialist, and former lonely homeschooled girl who overcame her isolated childhood to become the ruler of a new world…or at least semi-influential in the world of Internet Geeks and Goodreads book clubs.

After growing up in the south where she was “homeschooled for hippie reasons”, Felicia moved to Hollywood to pursue her dream of becoming an actress and was immediately typecast as a crazy cat-lady secretary. But Felicia’s misadventures in Hollywood led her to produce her own web series, own her own production company, and become an Internet star.

Felicia’s short-ish life and her rags-to-riches rise to Internet fame launched her career as one of the most influential creators in new media. Now, Felicia’s strange world is filled with thoughts on creativity, video games, and a dash of mild feminist activism—just like her memoir.

Hilarious and inspirational, You’re Never Weird on the Internet (Almost) is proof that everyone should embrace what makes them different and be brave enough to share it with the world, because anything is possible now—even for a digital misfit.

  • To the Edge

To the Edge by Anna del Mar

To the Edge by Anna del Mar is $2.99! This is an erotic romance with BDSM between a Navy SEAL and a senator’s daughter. It also has some second chance romance elements. There is a suspense subplot. Some readers loved it, while others thought it added too much to the romance.

To learn about kink, she had to learn the ropes. Yet she never expected to be so compromised she’d need rescuing. And by him. The first man she’d ever loved. The former navy SEAL who’d broken her heart.

    Clara’s gone wild.

Naked. Cuffed. Caged. Is this the sweet senator’s daughter I left behind?

I didn’t know it was her when I rushed into that room filled with flames, but I’ll never let her go again.

She’s proposed a unique way to thank me. It could bring us both to the edge of ecstasy—or to the point of no return.

Clara wants to submit. To me. Totally. Damn any limits. The very thought of it has brought me back from the dead.

But a stranger is watching from the shadows. He’s made us his fantasy. And he plays rougher than I do. Where he’s taking us now is somewhere so dark, and so dangerous, that this time it could be inescapable.

  • Karen Memory

    Karen Memory by Elizabeth Bear

Karen Memory by Elizabeth Bear is $2.99! This is a steampunk novel with some alternate history and I totally love the cover. What do you think? Readers really loved the heroine and I can’t really blame them. She sounds (and looks) like a badass. However, some thought there were too many different elements going on. It has a 3.7-star rating on Goodreads.

“You ain’t gonna like what I have to tell you, but I’m gonna tell you anyway. See, my name is Karen Memery, like memory only spelt with an e, and I’m one of the girls what works in the Hôtel Mon Cherie on Amity Street. Hôtel has a little hat over the o like that. It’s French, so Beatrice tells me.”

Hugo-Award winning author Elizabeth Bear offers something new in Karen Memory, an absolutely entrancing steampunk novel set in Seattle in the late 19th century—an era when the town was called Rapid City, when the parts we now call Seattle Underground were the whole town (and still on the surface), when airships plied the trade routes bringing would-be miners heading up to the gold fields of Alaska, and steam-powered mechanicals stalked the waterfront. Karen is a “soiled dove,” a young woman on her own who is making the best of her orphaned state by working in Madame Damnable’s high-quality bordello. Through Karen’s eyes we get to know the other girls in the house—a resourceful group—and the poor and the powerful of the town. Trouble erupts into her world one night when a badly injured girl arrives at their door, seeking sanctuary, followed by the man who holds her indenture, who has a machine that can take over anyone’s mind and control their actions. And as if that wasn’t bad enough, the next night brings a body dumped in their rubbish heap—a streetwalker who has been brutally murdered.

Bear brings alive this Jack-the-Ripper-type story of the old west with the light touch of Karen’s own memorable voice, and a mesmerizing evocation of classic steam-powered science.

  • The Harder You Fall

The Harder You Fall by Gena Showalter

The Harder You Fall by Gena Showalter is 99c! This is the third book in The Heartbreakers series, but it can be read as a standalone. Some readers took issue with the dialogue and felt it was out of place in a contemporary romance, but others loved the chemistry and tension between the hero and heroine. Have you read this one?

From New York Times bestselling author Gena Showalter comes another scorching Original Heartbreakers tale featuring an aloof bad boy and the rowdy Southern belle who rocks his world…

Millionaire video-game creator Lincoln West has a dark and tragic past. The sought-after bachelor lives by a rigid schedule and a single rule—one relationship per year, lasting no more than two months. No exceptions. He moved to small town Strawberry Valley, Oklahoma, with his brothers-by-circumstance hoping to escape the worst of his memories—until a brash beauty dredges up long-buried emotions.

A reformed party girl, Jessie Kay Dillon is determined to walk the straight and narrow. But her love-hate sizzle with West is just too irresistible. They can’t be near each other without tearing off their clothes, but the last thing she needs is to be his next two-month dump. Can she be the one exception? Because as any former girl-gone-wild knows: rules are made to be broken.

I want to cover snark To the Edge. Is the floating mansion in a thought bubble because it’s the only thing motivating this makeout session?

  2. Deborah says:

Sarina Bowen’s Coming in From the Cold is $0.00 (that’s FREE) at Amazon. Contemporary romance, sports theme.

According to my note, I added this to my Amazon wishlist on the strength of a Rec League post, presumably Inclement Weather & Forced Proximity, though why “I haven’t read it, but I’ve heard good things” and the promise of car sexytimes merited adding a book to my crowded wishlist, I cannot now recall. But FREE. Also, I’ve heard lovely things about Bowen’s novella Blonde Date, so I guess her name got glitter recognition points for that. *patiently waits for Bowen’s Hard Hitter to go on sale*

Oh, for the ability to fix a broken link in a comment: Coming in From the Cold

  4. Nancy C says:

I am so one-clicking that Bowen title! I’m in love with all of her books that I’ve read so far (Ivy Years and True North series).

  5. SusanH says:

I don’t read a lot of steampunk, but I really liked Karen Memory. It has a very diverse cast, fun world-building, and a sweet f/f romance.

  6. SeventhWave says:

I also loved Karen Memory. It’s a little more accessible than some of Elizabeth Bear’s other works (she can put together some pretty complex, dense worlds and then drop you in without a map); and the plot and cast of characters worked really well for me.
